Hungry Horrors is a single-player folklore deckbuilder. Its Campaign mode offers Vanilla and Spicy difficulty, while Banquet is a shorter, harder roguelike with its own difficulty levels. What is Hungry Horrors?
Hungry Horrors is a story-driven deckbuilder set in the folklore of the British Isles. Players cook dishes, combine their flavours to create synergies, meet mythical characters, and try to feed legendary Horrors before the creatures feed on the princess. Clumsy Bear Studio’s 2026 announcement describes a game with eight playable biomes, 34 folklore Horrors, 62 playable dishes, and 13 legendary characters.
Those details help explain the game’s two modes: one is built around a story campaign, while the other offers shorter roguelike runs. The game is listed on Steam as single-player, so the deckbuilding and encounters are not presented as a co-op or competitive multiplayer experience.

Where are Hungry Horrors save files located?
SteamDB lists Hungry Horrors saves as *.save files under Godot’s app_userdata/Hungry Horrors/{64BitSteamID} directory. The platform-specific paths it gives are:

{64BitSteamID} is a placeholder for the relevant 64-bit Steam ID directory, not a folder name to type literally. The Linux path also starts with the value of the XDG_DATA_HOME environment variable. If that variable is not set, the path as listed does not tell you which default directory the game is using, so do not assume that the literal string $XDG_DATA_HOME is a folder.
Find the folder on Windows
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%USERPROFILE%/AppData/Roaming/Godot/app_userdata/Hungry Horrorsin the address bar and press Enter. - Open the directory named for the relevant 64-bit Steam ID, then look for files ending in
.save.
If the folder does not appear, check that the path is entered exactly and that you are looking under the Windows account used to play the game. The listed path is in the user profile’s Roaming application data, not the game’s installation directory.
Find the folder on Linux
Use the Linux save location listed above, substituting the actual value of XDG_DATA_HOME for the variable. Then open the Godot/Hungry Horrors directories and the applicable Steam ID folder. The source listing does not provide a separate macOS path, so this location should not be assumed to apply to macOS.

Back up or move a save safely
Before changing or moving save files, close the game. Copy the relevant .save file to another location and leave that backup untouched. Work on a duplicate rather than renaming or overwriting the only copy. The available path information identifies the save-file format and directory, but it does not establish what each slot contains or how the game handles conflicting copies; avoid editing the contents of a save file.
When moving a save between branches, preserve the original file and verify the copied filename before launching the other branch. If progress is missing afterward, close the game and restore the unchanged backup rather than repeatedly renaming files or overwriting the original.
Are normal-branch and Beta saves shared?
No. The developer says the Beta branch uses its own save files, separate from the default branch. A save from the default branch therefore will not automatically appear as the corresponding Beta save. To use a copied save in Beta, the developer’s guidance is to add beta_ to the filename while keeping the original.

The example in the developer announcement is slot_1.save renamed as beta_slot1.save. Because that example drops the underscore between “slot” and “1,” check the exact filename you have and retain the original before trying the branch-specific copy. The announcement establishes the prefix convention, but it does not explain whether every save-slot name follows that example or how the game handles other filenames.

- Exit Hungry Horrors before touching its save files.
- Open the platform-specific save directory and locate the save you want to copy.
- Make a separate backup of the original file.
- Copy the save, then rename only the copy with the
beta_prefix. The developer’s example isslot_1.savetobeta_slot1.save. - Launch the Beta branch and check whether the copied progress appears. If it does not, close the game and preserve both the original and backup; do not replace the default-branch file.
The separate-file design is intended to keep default-branch progress safe while testing Beta, but a manual copy or rename can still go wrong. Keeping an untouched copy is the simplest recovery path.
What difficulty modes does Hungry Horrors have?
The developer’s 1.0 announcement identifies two modes with different run structures. Campaign is a roguelite story mode with Vanilla or Spicy difficulty. Banquet is a shorter, harder roguelike mode with its own difficulty levels.

The official mode description does not give a full ruleset for what carries over after a run, what ends a run, or how Banquet’s individual difficulty levels differ. Community commentary has described Banquet as having different permadeath and random-number-generation (RNG) behaviour, but that is community-reported rather than a detailed official explanation. If those mechanics will determine which mode you choose, use the in-game mode descriptions as the immediate guide rather than treating community shorthand as a complete rules list.
Which mode should you choose?
- Choose Campaign if you want the roguelite story mode and a choice between Vanilla and Spicy difficulty.
- Choose Banquet if you want a shorter, harder roguelike run and are comfortable with a mode that has its own difficulty levels.
- Do not infer a specific penalty from the mode names. The announcement establishes the broad distinction, not the exact consequences of defeat or the amount of progression retained.
Does Hungry Horrors have multiplayer or co-op?

Does Hungry Horrors support a controller and Steam Deck?
Yes. Clumsy Bear Studio says Hungry Horrors is Steam Deck Verified and supports full controller, mouse-only, or keyboard-only play. SteamDB also records full controller support. The three input options mean a controller is supported, but it is not required: mouse-only and keyboard-only control are also advertised.
Using a controller on Steam Deck
SteamDB reports that the default Steam Deck controller configuration exposes all functionality. If a Bluetooth or USB controller is connected and inputs are not going to the expected device, SteamDB notes that you may need to switch the active controller manually in the Quick Access Menu. This is a controller-selection issue to check before concluding that the game lacks controller support.
