Win your first Hungry Horrors runs by treating every encounter as a flavour-order puzzle, not a race to play your strongest dish. Read the Horror’s visible craving, assemble a sequence that covers the required tastes, keep enough food to finish the chain, and spend upgrades only when they support a plan you can trigger. A flexible deck is safer than a specialised one while you are learning.

Hungry Horrors is a pixel-art, turn-based roguelite deckbuilder inspired by British and Irish folklore. You play a princess who cooks and serves dishes to approaching Horrors. If one reaches you and feeds on you, the run ends. The five tastes—sweet, savoury, sour, salty and bitter—determine the flavour chains that fill a Horror’s hunger.

Understand the win condition before choosing cards

The encounter is a sequence, not a single-card test

Each Horror displays a craving. The aim is to match that craving in the correct order across your turn sequence, then keep serving until its hunger is filled before it reaches the princess. The Steam description summarises the loop as matching cravings, chaining the right flavours and letting hunger snowball. A dish that technically answers one taste can still be a poor play if it prevents the next link in the chain.

Five tastes drive every early decision

The official game description identifies five taste families:

Cards and abilities can change how a dish contributes, so taste icons are more important than a card’s apparent value in isolation. During your first runs, read the taste on every available dish before judging its damage or hunger contribution. The safest beginner deck can answer several of the five tastes instead of relying on one flavour.

Build a beginner deck that can answer the board

1. Read the encounter before drafting

Start each fight by identifying the visible craving and the order the Horror expects. Treat that craving as the target for the whole sequence, not as a suggestion for one card. If the first required taste is sour, for example, do not automatically spend your best sour dish if doing so leaves no way to supply the next required taste.

2. Draft for coverage rather than a favourite flavour

When you have a choice of dishes, prefer cards that cover different tastes or can contribute in more than one situation. A deck built almost entirely around one taste may look powerful in an encounter that asks for it, but it becomes fragile when the next Horror wants another flavour. Early flexibility also gives you more chances to discover which chains you enjoy without committing the run to an untested theme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a practical inference from the five-taste and chain systems, not a developer-published tier list. There is no verified universal best deck and no complete public card table that proves one build wins every run.

3. Keep an answer for the next link

Before playing a high-value dish, scan the remaining hand and supply. Ask three questions:

  • Does this card satisfy the current craving?
  • What taste must come next?
  • Will I still have that taste, or a card that can reach it, after this play?

A slightly weaker dish that preserves the chain is usually better than a large isolated hit. The objective is to complete the sequence and fill hunger, not to maximise one card’s number.

4. Protect enough food to finish

Do not spend every premium dish on a partial answer. Hold enough food to complete the chain and close the encounter. A Steam community tip describes a pattern in which a player completes three sets while retaining a tenth food as an end-of-battle bonus carrier. Treat that as player advice and a useful experiment, not as a guaranteed optimal threshold: card pools, upgrades and current balance can change the result.

5. Choose upgrades that your deck can actually trigger

Seasonings and dish abilities alter how cards contribute. Pick an upgrade because it strengthens a sequence you can reliably assemble, not merely because its name sounds powerful. The 2026 developer update lists abilities including Dodge, Plated, Reheat, Forage, Banquet and Apothecary. Their value depends on the dishes and flavour order available in your current run.

What to cook for the first Horror

Your first Horror is a tutorial for reading order and conserving supply. Use this procedure rather than searching for one supposedly perfect recipe:

  1. Pause on the encounter screen. Read the Horror’s displayed craving and identify the first taste in the required order.
  2. Sort your available dishes by taste. Note cards that can cover the first taste and cards that could follow it. Include any seasoning or ability that changes a dish’s contribution.
  3. Choose the lowest-cost reliable opener. Save a stronger card if the same taste can be supplied by a more ordinary dish without breaking your next step.
  4. Check the follow-up before serving. Confirm that your remaining hand or supply contains the next required taste. If it does not, reconsider the opener instead of committing to a dead-end chain.
  5. Serve in the displayed order. Watch the chain indicator and hunger increase after each dish. A sequence that stops advancing is a signal to preserve food rather than force another unrelated card.
  6. Finish the encounter deliberately. Keep a reserve for the final link and any end-of-battle effect you are trying to carry. Do not assume that reducing the Horror’s hunger partway is enough if it can still reach the princess.
  7. Review the result. Notice which taste was missing and which card saved the chain. That information should guide the next draft choice.

There is no evidence that one named dish or one taste is always correct for the first Horror. The correct opening is the one that matches the current craving and leaves a viable continuation.

How flavour chains and hunger snowball work

Cravings are the route through the encounter

Every Horror has taste preferences. Matching the requested taste creates the opportunity for the next link; serving out of order can waste a card or stop the chain. Read the sequence as a route through the fight. If your hand contains several attractive dishes, the one that preserves the route is the priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Synergy matters more than isolated hunger

The official description says that serving what a Horror craves creates chains that stack massive hunger. In practical terms, successful links compound the value of the sequence. A card that looks modest by itself can be the correct play when it unlocks the next link, while a larger off-chain card may leave the Horror alive and consume resources.

Use flexible cards to recover from imperfect draws

When a draw does not show the exact taste you wanted, look for dishes or abilities that can contribute through another route. Keep at least one broadly useful option when drafting. This does not mean every card must cover multiple tastes; it means the deck should have enough alternate routes that one awkward draw does not end the run.

Do not treat a community pattern as a rule

Players have shared chain examples, including the three-set and tenth-food pattern, but those examples are not controlled tests or official guarantees. Use them as starting heuristics, then adjust for your princess, upgrades, available dishes and the Horror in front of you.

Banquet mode: the best place to learn disciplined routing

What the official rules establish

The official patch notes describe Banquet as a shorter roguelike run with three acts, permanent death, new dishes after each encounter and known monster cravings before a fight. Those rules make Banquet readable but unforgiving: you can plan around the displayed craving, yet a mistake cannot be erased by reviving later.

Set up a first Banquet run

A current community guide says the setup asks you to choose a princess, mode and difficulty, and that winning a Banquet unlocks another princess. Because that is community documentation rather than a fixed developer promise, verify the current unlock order on your own title screen.

  1. Choose the least punishing available difficulty while you learn the base loop.
  2. Select a princess whose starting options you understand rather than one chosen only for a flashy ability.
  3. Before the first encounter, inspect the initial dishes and note which tastes your deck can answer.
  4. After each fight, add a dish that repairs a coverage gap or improves a route you have already demonstrated, rather than adding power with no matching chain.
  5. At the end of each act, check your remaining supply and upgrades before committing to a risky specialised plan.

How to pace three acts

In a three-act run, an impressive opening does not justify exhausting the deck. Keep a reserve for later encounters, because every new dish and upgrade changes the routes available to you. Known cravings let you prepare, but they do not remove the cost of a failed sequence. Plan one encounter ahead without sacrificing the food needed to survive the current one.

Learn the base rules before adding modifiers

Hungry Horrors includes modifiers that change the economy and persistence of a run. Start with the least punishing setup available, then test one modifier at a time. Otherwise, you may blame your deck for a failure caused by a mode rule.

Use upgrades and abilities as part of a chain plan

Dodge and Plated

Defensive-sounding abilities such as Dodge and Plated should be evaluated by what they let you survive or preserve. A defensive effect is valuable when it buys a turn to complete a chain or protects a scarce dish. Do not assume it directly increases hunger unless the current card text says so.

Reheat

Reheat can matter when a previously useful dish needs to return to your plan. Check the exact current wording and timing, then ask whether replaying that card creates a complete route rather than merely repeating an isolated taste.

Forage

Forage is most useful when your supply is the limiting factor. Pair it with a deck that has a clear sequence to feed; generating more ingredients does not fix a deck that cannot answer the required tastes.

Banquet and Apothecary

Abilities named Banquet and Apothecary are part of the documented ability set, but their practical value depends on the current card text, mode and available ingredients. Read the tooltip in your version and choose them only when they support a route you can demonstrate in the next encounter.

Story mode versus Banquet: choosing your first practice environment

If you want to learn without the pressure of a short permanent-death run, choose the least punishing default or story-style option presented by your current build. The cited patch notes do not establish every story-mode value, so do not assume that resources, cravings or death behave exactly as they do in Banquet.

Common first-run failures and precise fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix on the next run
The first dish works but the chain stops You answered the visible taste without planning the next link Preview the entire sequence and keep a follow-up taste before serving
You win one encounter and have no useful food left High-value dishes were spent on partial progress Reserve enough supply to complete the chain and test the end-of-battle plan
A deck feels strong only against one Horror Too much concentration in one taste Draft broader coverage and retain at least one alternate route
Seasonings seem powerful but rarely matter The upgrade is not connected to a repeatable chain Choose upgrades after identifying the route your current deck can actually trigger
A repeated biome suddenly becomes dangerous Spicy scaling applies to revisited biomes Account for the increased difficulty and do not expect the first visit to predict the second
Resources disappear after death Spicy removes potion and seasoning persistence on death Treat those resources as run-local and avoid a strategy that depends on recovery after failure
An old guide’s card behaviour does not match your game Patches changed modes, cravings, discard, cooking UI or dish mechanics Read the current patch archive and the in-game card text before copying the build

A repeatable decision framework for every encounter

When the screen becomes busy, use this short priority order:

  1. Survival: Can the Horror reach the princess before you finish? If yes, prioritise the route that completes hunger, not optional value.
  2. Order: What taste is required now, and what taste follows it?
  3. Coverage: Which remaining cards can answer the next two links?
  4. Supply: What food must remain for the final link and the next encounter?
  5. Upgrade fit: Does a seasoning or ability improve this exact route, or is it merely attractive in theory?
  6. Version check: Is a rule you remember from an older run still present in the current patch?

This framework keeps the central risk visible: an uncompleted chain gives the Horror time to advance, while an exhausted supply makes the next encounter impossible even if the current one is won.

How to improve between attempts

Record the failure, not just the result

After a loss, write down the first point at which the route became impossible: missing taste, wrong order, exhausted food, or a modifier you misunderstood. Then change one variable on the next run. Rebuilding the entire deck after every loss makes it difficult to identify what actually helped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test one new idea at a time

Try a broader taste spread, a different seasoning, or a different princess on separate attempts. Banquet’s permanent death makes controlled experimentation especially useful because each run is short but consequential.

Use the patch archive as a rules reference

The official patch archive records changes to modes, cravings, card discard, the cooking interface and dish mechanics. If a remembered interaction differs from the tooltip, trust the current in-game text and patch notes rather than an older guide.

What a successful beginner run should look like

A good early run is not defined by a particular flavour, princess or card list. It has a recognisable rhythm: you read the craving before acting, select a dish that preserves the next link, keep enough food to finish, and add upgrades that reinforce a route already working. Once that rhythm is reliable, Banquet’s three acts become a test of consistency instead of guesswork. Only then should you add the resource and scaling pressure of modifiers such as Culinary and Spicy.
