Buy Civilization VII if you want a finished 4X strategy game you can play now, with broad platform support, documented cross-play and cross-progression. Wait for Humankind 2 if you want a more experimental historical sandbox built around optional cultural evolution, environmental adaptation, First Tales and six eras. Humankind 2 is planned for PC in 2027, so any judgment about it remains provisional until the released game can be assessed.

The central difference is how each game treats historical identity. Civilization VII changes your civilization at the beginning of each of its three Ages, while Humankind 2 lets you keep one cultural identity or evolve it as exploration, settlement, diplomacy and local conditions shape your story.

It is also the safer choice for a group of friends. Cross-play and cross-progression are documented, and PlayStation’s materials confirm cross-play between PC and consoles. Online play requires an internet connection and a 2K account; console multiplayer additionally requires the relevant platform subscription. Session size, map size and platform combinations can impose restrictions, so check those limits before organizing a large campaign.

Wait for Humankind 2 when the historical sandbox matters more than certainty

Humankind 2 is planned for PC in 2027. Its announcement presents a game in which your civilization’s identity can remain stable or change in response to what happens during the campaign. The design combines six eras, more than 70 playable cultures, First Tales, biome-specific adaptation and battles fought directly on the world map.

That makes it a compelling wishlist candidate, not a product that can yet be called better. The available preview was hands-off and limited; its writer explicitly cautioned against sweeping conclusions. Features, balance, performance, interface quality, multiplayer and the final release schedule could still change.

How each game handles historical identity

Civilization VII: a deliberate reset at each Age

Civilization VII divides a campaign into Antiquity, Exploration and Modern. Each Age has its own civilizations, resources, explorable territory and gameplay systems. At the start of every Age, you select a new civilization partly according to accomplishments from the preceding Age.

Leaders are chosen independently from civilizations. That separation lets you combine a leader’s bonuses with a different civilization’s Age-specific abilities, creating a build that is not locked to a single historical pairing. The result is a structured form of historical remixing: your empire’s identity changes at known transition points, and your earlier achievements help determine the options available next.

Firaxis creative director Ed Beach described the goal as combining Ages with independent leader and civilization selection so players can “mix and match gameplay bonuses.” In practical terms, Civilization VII asks you to plan for the next Age while extracting as much value as possible from the current one.

Humankind 2: identity can persist, branch or adapt

Humankind 2 offers a different choice. Culture evolution is optional, so you can retain one cultural identity instead of changing it as the campaign advances. You can also evolve through exploration, settlement, diplomacy and adaptation. The game presents these changes as part of your civilization’s developing identity rather than as an obligatory reset.

Its Crossroads are described as points where cultures can diverge through common history, shared land or contact with foreign peoples. That structure should appeal to players who want a campaign to explain why their society changed, not simply announce that a new Age has begun.

The distinction is important for role-play. Civilization VII gives you a clear, repeatable framework for changing civilizations. Humankind 2 aims to make identity more contingent: the same starting culture could develop differently depending on where it settles, which environments it encounters and which relationships it forms.

How the eras and Ages differ

Civilization VII’s three-Age framework

  1. Antiquity: the opening Age, with its own civilizations, resources, territory and systems.
  2. Exploration: a distinct middle Age that changes the available historical and strategic choices.
  3. Modern: the final Age, with another set of civilizations, resources and systems.

The three-Age structure is compact and legible. You know there are three major transitions, and each one is a strategic checkpoint. A player who enjoys planning around a visible technology or progression arc may find this easier to read than a system with many possible cultural branches.

Humankind 2’s six eras

Humankind 2 has six distinct eras and more than 70 playable cultures. The announcement does not provide a complete era-by-era list or specify exactly when each transition occurs. What it does establish is a longer sequence of historical phases and a larger pool of cultures from which to build a campaign.

Because culture evolution is optional, the six-era structure does not automatically mean six mandatory identity changes. You may follow a continuous cultural path, evolve at Crossroads, or use environmental adaptation and encounters to add traits without abandoning your core identity.

In short, Civilization VII uses fewer, more explicit transitions; Humankind 2 offers more eras but leaves more of the identity question to player choice. Neither approach is inherently deeper. The better fit depends on whether you prefer predictable milestones or a less prescribed historical arc.

World simulation: environment, climate and territory

Humankind 2 makes adaptation a central system

Humankind 2’s most distinctive promise is that the environment is not merely a backdrop. Biomes provide different resources and challenges, and the Adaptation System grants traits and abilities shaped by the surroundings. The preview gives examples including mudbrick construction, camel herding, heat endurance, warmth, whaling and resource preservation.

Those examples suggest that settling in a desert, cold region or coastal zone can alter what your society is capable of doing. Local encounters may add customs, knowledge and technologies, so a region can influence culture through both material conditions and social contact.

The preview also says climate can shift through natural activity and through actions by the player or non-player actors. That points toward feedback between human decisions and the world: development can change conditions, while changing conditions can create new strategic pressures. The exact rules, scale and balance of that feedback are not yet established.

First Tales connect the opening to the map

Every Humankind 2 campaign begins with a First Tale. The announcement’s example is the Flood Tamer Tale associated with Ancient Egypt. First Tales can grant starting advantages tied to territory, according to the hands-off preview, giving the opening of a campaign a narrative and geographic identity.

This is different from receiving a generic starting position and then building a story entirely through later decisions. Your first tale is intended to frame the civilization’s initial relationship with the world, while later encounters and adaptation can redirect that story.

Civilization VII emphasizes Age progression

The cited Civilization VII materials emphasize the way each Age introduces distinct resources, explorable land, civilizations and systems. Its world simulation is therefore organized around empire milestones and Age transitions rather than the environmental adaptation mechanics highlighted for Humankind 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not make Civilization VII’s map strategically simple; it means the supplied information supports a clearer claim about its progression model than about a comparable climate-feedback system. If biome-driven identity is your deciding feature, Humankind 2 is the game to watch. If you want a known progression cadence, Civilization VII is the more certain choice.

Combat and strategic planning

Humankind 2: battles on the world map

Humankind 2 places battles directly on the world map, with emphasis on positioning, terrain, army composition and long-term planning. That ties military decisions to the same geography that shapes culture and adaptation. A settlement’s environment can matter before a battle begins, and the terrain occupied by an army is part of the tactical problem.

The available materials do not establish unit rosters, combat resolution details, multiplayer rules or balance. Treat the confirmed point as a design emphasis: positioning, terrain and composition are intended to matter, rather than assuming combat is an isolated encounter detached from the campaign map.

Civilization VII: plan around the next Age

Civilization VII’s documented strategic distinction is the need to prepare for Age transitions. Your accomplishments in one Age help determine which civilization you can select in the next, while your leader remains a separate choice. Long-term planning therefore includes building an empire that qualifies for a desirable future identity, not only maximizing the current turn.

The supplied launch materials do not provide a like-for-like combat specification against Humankind 2. Choose Civilization VII for its released, structured campaign loop; choose Humankind 2 if the prospect of terrain-linked battles and environmental planning is what attracts you.

Platforms, cross-play and campaign size

Civilization VII has the broadest confirmed reach

Civilization VII is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, and Mac/Linux through Steam. Take-Two’s launch material describes cross-play and cross-progression, while PlayStation confirms cross-play between PC and consoles.

PlayStation’s multiplayer information says campaigns can cover all three Ages or focus on a single Age. Supported sessions allow up to five players in Antiquity and Exploration and up to eight players in Modern. Map-size and platform restrictions apply, so those are supported limits rather than a promise that every platform combination can host every configuration.

Humankind 2’s multiplayer plan is not yet specified

The cited Humankind 2 announcement confirms a PC release planned for 2027 but does not state its multiplayer scope, cross-play support, cross-progression, player count or subscription requirements. Do not assume that a PC announcement implies any particular online mode.

For a group purchase today, Civilization VII is the only option in this comparison with documented cross-platform multiplayer information. For a solo player, the unknown multiplayer plan may be irrelevant; for a regular online group, it is a major reason to choose the released game.

What is known, and what remains uncertain about Humankind 2

Amplitude Studios announced Humankind 2 on 15 October 2026. The announcement establishes a historical, turn-based strategy game with an authentic Earth map in Historical Mode, more than 30 historians involved in that mode, six eras, more than 70 playable cultures, optional culture evolution, First Tales, adaptation, local encounters and world-map battles.

Amplitude game director Benoit Humbert said the aim is for every choice to shape the identity of your civilization, whether you evolve your culture, adapt to an environment, build relationships or take an unexpected path. That statement accurately describes the design ambition, but it is not evidence that the final game will deliver every system with the intended depth.

PC Gamer’s hands-off preview adds details about climate shifts, territory-linked First Tale advantages and Crossroads. It also explicitly limits the confidence of its impressions because the demo was too limited for sweeping declarations. There is no finished review consensus to cite yet.

Accordingly, judge Humankind 2 by confirmed design goals rather than by assumed performance, balance or quality. Wishlist it if the concept matches your ideal 4X game, but do not treat announced features as a substitute for a playable release.

Decision guide by player type

Pick Civilization VII if you are a first-time 4X player

Its three-Age structure gives you clear milestones, and the game is available on more platforms. You can learn the campaign loop in a released product, then use cross-play if friends play on compatible systems.

Pick Civilization VII if you are organizing multiplayer

Cross-play, cross-progression and documented player limits provide information you can use before buying. You can choose an all-Age campaign or a single-Age session, subject to map and platform restrictions.

Wait for Humankind 2 if you want one evolving civilization

Humankind 2 is the better match for the specific fantasy of keeping a cultural identity while allowing it to branch through contact, settlement, diplomacy and adaptation. Civilization VII instead expects you to select a new civilization at each Age transition.

Wait for Humankind 2 if environment should shape society

Its confirmed design foregrounds biomes, climate changes, adaptation traits and local encounters. The examples of mudbricks, camel herding, heat endurance, warmth, whaling and resource preservation point to a system where surroundings can affect capabilities and priorities.

Wait if you only buy finished games

Humankind 2 is not scheduled for release until 2027, and the available evidence comes from an announcement and a limited hands-off preview. Civilization VII is the only defensible purchase recommendation when release certainty is your top criterion.

Should you buy Civilization VII now or wait?

  1. List your required platform. If you need PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Mac/Linux or cross-platform multiplayer, Civilization VII is the confirmed option in this comparison.
  2. Decide whether identity changes should be mandatory. Choose Civilization VII for planned civilization changes at three Age transitions; wait for Humankind 2 if retaining one culture is essential.
  3. Rank environmental simulation. Humankind 2 is the one with announced biome adaptation, climate feedback and territory-linked First Tales.
  4. Check your multiplayer needs. Civilization VII has documented cross-play and campaign-size information. Humankind 2’s online scope is not yet stated.
  5. Set a release-risk tolerance. Buy the released game for a known experience, or wishlist Humankind 2 and reassess when its PC release is closer and more hands-on information is available.

Bottom line

Civilization VII is right for most readers making a purchase decision now: it is released, widely available and documented as supporting cross-play and cross-progression. Its three Ages and independent leader selection provide a clear, remixable historical structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Humankind 2 is the more compelling future choice for a history-sandbox player who wants culture to evolve optionally, environments to grant meaningful adaptations, climate to influence the world and First Tales to frame each campaign. It may become the better game for that audience, but its planned 2027 PC release means that verdict must wait for the finished product.
