Hubble’s greatest achievement is not one discovery or picture: it is a 35-year record of changing what astronomers can observe, from the universe’s expansion and distant galaxies to planets around other stars. Here are 10 of its most consequential achievements, ranked as an editorial selection by scientific impact, novelty, durability and public reach—not as an official NASA top ten.
What are Hubble’s 10 greatest achievements?
NASA describes its highlights as a sample from thousands of observations. The ranking below draws on those documented milestones and distinguishes Hubble’s observations from the broader conclusions scientists have built from them.
1. Measuring the universe’s expansion with precision
Hubble made the first precision measurement of the universe’s expansion rate, a foundational result for reconstructing how the cosmos has changed over time. That work also helped establish the modern dark-energy problem: the observed expansion is accelerating, and explaining why remains a major question in cosmology. NASA lists the precision measurement as a Hubble science highlight; the dark-energy question is a wider scientific conclusion, not a finding attributable to Hubble alone.
2. Showing that supermassive black holes are common in galaxies
Hubble provided the first confirmation that supermassive black holes exist and evidence that black holes sit at the cores of almost all galaxies. The importance goes beyond finding individual objects: it made black holes a central part of the picture astronomers use to understand galaxies and their evolution.

3. Looking back toward the early universe with deep fields
By holding its gaze on apparently small, dark patches of sky for long exposures, Hubble revealed galaxies from when the universe was only a small fraction of its current age. NASA’s About Hubble page describes observations reaching more than 13.4 billion light-years. That figure conveys how far back the observations reach; it should not be mistaken for a galaxy’s present-day distance, which is a different measurement in an expanding universe.
4. Reading the atmospheres of planets beyond our solar system
Hubble made the first detection of an exoplanet atmosphere and went on to identify atmospheric elements, detect water vapor on an exoplanet in the habitable zone, and find organic molecules in an exoplanet atmosphere. These observations turned some distant planets from points of light into worlds whose atmospheric properties could be investigated. A habitable-zone location is not, by itself, evidence that a planet is habitable or inhabited.

5. Seeing the raw materials of planetary systems
Hubble provided the first visual evidence of planetary building blocks. Its observations of dusty disks and stellar nurseries in the Milky Way showed environments that may develop into planetary systems. Rather than watching planets assemble directly, astronomers can use these observations to study the settings and material from which systems like ours may form.
6. Catching change in the cosmos
Repeated observations and Hubble’s archive have let astronomers track phenomena that unfold over time, not just capture a single moment. NASA highlights observations of asteroid tails, an asteroid breaking apart, images of a predicted supernova, and water-vapor plumes from Europa. Together, these examples show how a long-running observatory can reveal motion, change and events that would be missed by a one-time snapshot.

7. Helping plan a journey to Pluto
Hubble’s systematic observations of solar-system planets and moons, along with its Kuiper Belt discoveries, helped NASA plan the New Horizons spacecraft’s Pluto flyby. Here Hubble’s contribution was not replacing a spacecraft’s close-up exploration; it was providing a wider view that helped inform where and how that exploration could proceed.
8. Turning a blurred first view into an engineering rescue
Soon after Hubble launched on April 24, 1990, astronomers discovered spherical aberration in its primary mirror, which blurred its images. Astronaut servicing missions corrected the problem and upgraded the observatory. NASA credits five servicing missions with extending Hubble’s life, making the repair a landmark in the history of space-based engineering as well as a rescue of its scientific mission.

9. Building a scientific archive that continues to deliver
NASA reported more than 1.7 million Hubble observations and over 23,000 peer-reviewed science papers in its 2024–2025 science and anniversary materials. For science through 2024, NASA also reported more than 1.4 million citations, with citations increasing by more than 150 per day on average. These counts describe the continuing reach of Hubble’s observations and research; they are dated measures, not a fixed lifetime total.
10. Making astronomy part of shared culture
NASA describes Hubble images as part of film, music, art, tattoos, television and stamps, and calls the observatory a cultural asset for the world. Its impact is unusual for a scientific instrument: observations made for research have also become a widely recognized way for people to encounter the scale and beauty of the universe.

What is Hubble’s coolest image?
There is no single NASA-certified “coolest” image, and this ranking is about achievements rather than choosing one photograph. Deep-field images are strong candidates for scientific significance because they exposed galaxies from the early universe; the best choice for an individual viewer depends on whether they value discovery, visual drama or a particular object.
Why is Hubble still important after 35 years?
Hubble’s importance comes from the combination of a long observing record, discoveries across many fields and an archive that researchers continue to use. NASA called it “The People’s Telescope” on its 35th-anniversary page. As Hubble servicing-mission astronaut and astronomer John Grunsfeld put it on NASA’s About Hubble page: “Hubble is not just a satellite. It’s a symbol of humanity’s quest for knowledge.”
