Yes. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) said a suspected Russian state-linked actor accessed and exfiltrated data from some HPE cloud email accounts beginning in May 2023. The mailbox contents could include sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, driver’s-license details, and payment-card numbers. HPE has not disclosed a nationwide total of affected people.

What happened in the HPE breach?

HPE said it learned on December 12, 2023, that a suspected nation-state actor had accessed its cloud-based email environment without authorization. Its investigation found that the actor accessed and exfiltrated data beginning in May 2023 from a “small percentage” of HPE mailboxes. The affected accounts belonged to people in cybersecurity, go-to-market, business-segment, and other roles. HPE did not publish the percentage or a complete count of affected mailboxes. HPE’s January 2024 SEC filing also said the incident was likely related to an earlier event reported in June 2023, involving access to and exfiltration of a limited number of SharePoint files.

What personal information was exposed?

The potentially affected information was contained in users’ mailboxes, not described by HPE as a single standardized set of records. HPE told reporters that the accessed data included information in email, involving some employees and a small number of customers whose details appeared in messages. SecurityWeek reported that HPE told Massachusetts authorities compromised information could include Social Security numbers, driver’s-license information, and credit or debit card numbers. SecurityWeek’s report and BleepingComputer’s coverage describe those notifications.

How many people were affected?

HPE has not disclosed a total number of affected people. SecurityWeek reported that HPE identified 10 affected Massachusetts residents; that is a state-specific count, not a national total. The company’s description of the affected mailboxes as a “small percentage” does not provide enough information to calculate how many people received or should receive notice.

Who was responsible, and how certain is the attribution?

HPE attributed the activity to Midnight Blizzard, also known as Cozy Bear and commonly identified as APT29, a Russian state-linked group. HPE described the actor as suspected in its SEC filing. The filing does not establish how the group initially gained access, so the entry method should not be treated as known.

When were people notified, and what help did HPE offer?

HPE began sending written notices to impacted individuals on January 29, 2025, according to SecurityWeek. It offered affected people identity-theft restoration and credit-monitoring services. HPE also said it contained and remediated the incident and was cooperating with law enforcement.

What should someone who received an HPE notice do?

Use the instructions and contact details in the notice, and enroll in the restoration and monitoring services offered if they are relevant to you. Because mailbox data can include different kinds of information, prioritize safeguards based on what the notice says was involved:

  • If a Social Security number was exposed: Review your credit reports and consider placing a credit freeze with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus. A freeze can help prevent new credit accounts from being opened in your name, but you will need to lift it when applying for credit.
  • If driver’s-license information was exposed: Contact the issuing state motor-vehicle agency for advice about the specific information disclosed and whether it recommends a replacement or other action.
  • If payment-card information was exposed: Contact the card issuer using the number on the card or its official website, ask whether the account should be replaced, and review transactions for unfamiliar charges.
  • For any affected account: Be alert for targeted email, phone, or text messages that use personal details to appear credible. Do not click links or provide credentials in response to an unexpected message; contact the organization through a known official channel.

Keep the HPE notice and records of enrollment, calls, and any disputed transactions. If you did not receive a notice but believe your information may have appeared in an HPE email, contact HPE through its official channels rather than relying on an unsolicited message claiming to represent the company.
