Yes—but only selected HP ProLiant models and configurations. Canonical announced on 19 April 2012 that Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server would be certified and supported on select ProLiant systems, including Gen8 servers. The announcement said HP Ubuntu hardware-warranty support would be available from Ubuntu 12.04 Server’s launch on 26 April 2012. That is a historical certification, not a guarantee that every ProLiant server or optional component is supported today.
What Canonical and HP announced
Canonical’s 19 April 2012 announcement covered Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server on selected HP ProLiant systems. It included then-current Gen8 servers and said HP Ubuntu drivers and management software would be included as part of HP ProLiant hardware-warranty support, beginning with the operating system’s 26 April 2012 launch.
The words “selected systems” matter: the announcement did not certify every server carrying the ProLiant name or every combination of storage, network, and other options.
Which ProLiant models and Ubuntu releases are listed?
HPE’s Ubuntu minimum operating-system requirements matrix lists individual systems and requirements. Its entries distinguish Ubuntu 12.04 from later point releases for some configurations. For example, the DL380p Gen8 appears with Ubuntu 12.04 and with Ubuntu 12.04.3 for systems using the Intel Xeon E5-2600v2 processor series.

Use the matrix entry for the exact server and configuration rather than assuming a requirement for one model or processor applies to the whole ProLiant family. Older model listings are also available in HPE’s archived products matrix.
Why storage and network options can change the answer
Storage controllers
HPE’s matrix notes that the Dynamic Smart Array B110i, B120i, and B320i controller driver for Ubuntu 12.04 is unavailable for several models; certification was completed in SATA mode. A server’s model name alone therefore may not establish that its installed storage controller is covered.

Network adapters and installation methods
The same matrix says the HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 526 FLR-SFP+ adapter does not support iSCSI and FCoE installations on Ubuntu, and lists Ubuntu 12.04.3 as its minimum supported OS. Check both the specific adapter and the installation method against the applicable matrix entry.
What the certification scope means
HPE describes Ubuntu support and certification as using in-distribution drivers and cautions that not all model options and configurations are necessarily supported. The archived matrix states: “Ubuntu is Supported and Certified with in-distro drivers only. All model options and configurations are not necessarily supported.”

How to check a particular HP ProLiant server
- Identify the exact system. Record the ProLiant model and generation, processor series, storage controller, and network adapter. Do not rely only on a broad family name such as “Gen8.”
- Find the model in HPE’s matrix. Check the current requirements matrix and, for older listings, the archived products matrix.
- Match the Ubuntu point release. Confirm whether the row specifies 12.04 or a minimum such as 12.04.3; do not treat point releases as interchangeable where the matrix states a minimum.
- Verify component and installation caveats. Confirm the storage controller mode and driver availability, plus any network-adapter restrictions for the intended installation method.
- Check present-day operating-system lifecycle separately. Historical hardware certification does not show that Ubuntu 12.04 receives security maintenance in 2026. Canonical’s server certification policy says certification applies within the Ubuntu LTS release family through that LTS’s lifetime; it does not automatically carry forward to a later LTS family.
What the 2012 certification does not prove
- It does not establish certification for every HP ProLiant model, generation, or optional configuration.
- It does not establish that a specific storage controller or adapter works in every mode; HPE documents the component-level exceptions above.
- It does not establish current security maintenance for Ubuntu 12.04. Hardware certification and the operating system’s present lifecycle are separate questions.
