HP’s newly announced OmniBook 5 14 AI PC starts at $699.99 in the U.S., while Apple’s MacBook Neo starts at $599. The HP’s launch display is 2K OLED; Apple specifies a 13-inch Liquid Retina display. These are manufacturer announcements, not independent test results, so the specs establish what each company says—not which laptop is faster or better overall.

What HP announced for the OmniBook 5

HP announced the consumer Windows laptop on October 1, 2026, positioning it for everyday productivity, study, collaboration, content creation and entertainment. Its U.S. starting price is $699.99, and HP says it is expected at HP.com and Best Buy in October 2026. HP also says Core 7 models are planned for mid-October. The announcement does not confirm stock, final retailer prices or availability through other marketplaces. Check the live listing and configuration before buying.

HP describes an aluminum chassis offered in Smoke Silver, Starlit Blue, Peony Pink and Soft Honeydew. Announced specifications include up to an Intel Core 7 processor with integrated NPU capabilities, a 180-degree hinge, two full-function USB-C ports, an FHD IR camera with Windows Hello facial recognition, dual microphones, Poly Studio-tuned audio and DTS:X Ultra. These are HP’s specifications and positioning, not independently evaluated results. HP’s October 1, 2026 announcement has the company’s full description.

Display: launch OLED versus a later option

The launch version has a 2K OLED display rated by HP for up to 300 nits. HP says a 2.5K OLED version rated for up to 620 nits is planned for March 2027. That brighter, higher-resolution option is a future configuration, not the launch specification; its timing does not establish that it is available now.

Portability and HP’s battery claim

HP lists the OmniBook 5 at 11.77 mm thick and 1.16 kg. The company claims up to 42 hours of local video playback in its test: continuous local FHD video at 200 nits, with specified system and player audio settings and wireless enabled but not connected. HP cautions that actual battery life varies by configuration and declines with time and use. This is a manufacturer test claim, not a directly comparable result against Apple’s figure.

What Apple announced for MacBook Neo

Apple announced MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, with a U.S. starting price of $599. Its listed specifications include an A18 Pro chip, macOS Tahoe and a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with 2408-by-1506 resolution, 500 nits brightness and support for one billion colors. Apple claims up to 16 hours of battery life. Those are Apple’s specifications and battery claim; the announcements do not establish matched test conditions for comparing battery life with HP’s figure. See Apple’s MacBook Neo announcement.

The announced starting prices differ by $100.99. This is arithmetic on the companies’ U.S. starting prices, not a guarantee that similarly configured models cost that amount apart: configurations, discounts, live prices and availability can differ. The screen technologies and sizes differ, as do Windows and macOS. Choose based on the exact configuration and transaction price, the display you prefer, the apps and operating system you need, ports and peripherals, and retailer support.

What these announcements cannot tell you

Neither company’s announcement is an independent head-to-head review. Apple describes performance comparisons based on its testing of preproduction MacBook Neo systems against specified Intel Core Ultra 5 PCs. That is Apple’s stated comparison and methodology; it is not an OmniBook 5-versus-Neo benchmark. The announcements do not establish which laptop is faster, lasts longer under identical testing, or offers better overall value. Those judgments require comparable testing of the actual configurations and current transaction prices.
