HP’s quantum-security announcement is primarily a firmware-integrity milestone. The company says selected business printers use ASIC hardware and quantum-resistant digital signatures to verify firmware and protect early BIOS boot stages. That can help prevent a forged update from taking control of a printer, but it does not show that every document, network connection, stored file, password, or cryptographic function is protected against future quantum computers.
What HP announced
On March 18, 2025, HP announced what it called the world’s first printers designed to protect against quantum-computer attacks. The announcement covered three 8000 Series models:
| Model | Type | Protection HP described |
|---|---|---|
| HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP 8801 | Color multifunction printer | ASIC-based quantum-resistant cryptography for firmware digital-signature verification, including protection for early BIOS and BIOS boot firmware |
| HP Mono MFP 8601 | Monochrome multifunction printer | |
| HP LaserJet Pro Mono SFP 8501 | Monochrome single-function printer |
HP placed these devices within its Zero Trust Print Architecture. “World’s first” is HP’s own analysis and product claim; the available material does not represent an independent ranking or cryptographic audit.
How the protection works
Firmware signatures establish a trusted starting point
Printer firmware runs with highly privileged access. If an attacker could create a convincing replacement image or forge its signing credentials, a malicious update could persist below normal applications and compromise the device. HP says its new ASIC foundation checks firmware with quantum-resistant digital signatures before allowing it to run.

Early BIOS stages receive hardware-backed protection
HP also says the design protects early BIOS and BIOS boot firmware. Those stages execute before the main printer software, so protecting them helps establish an untampered chain of trust during startup. HP’s rationale is that hardware changes take a long time to design and deploy, while business printers may remain in service for years.
These technical details come from HP’s product descriptions and security material. The reviewed sources do not independently test the implementation or certify its resistance to a particular quantum attack.
What “quantum-safe” does not mean here
“Quantum-safe encryption” is a convenient headline, but it is broader than the evidence supports. HP’s announcement establishes a claim about firmware-signature validation and BIOS integrity. It does not establish that all of the following are post-quantum protected:

How to evaluate these printers for a replacement project
1. Separate firmware assurance from data protection
Ask which firmware-signing algorithms, boot components, update paths, network protocols, storage protections, and authentication methods are covered by the specific SKU. A printer can have quantum-resistant firmware validation while relying on conventional protections elsewhere.
2. Match the line to operational complexity
A small team that mainly prints routine documents may fit the Pro line’s simpler operating model. A distributed fleet with centralized policy, compliance reporting, scanning, and directory integration is more consistent with the Enterprise lines’ stated target.

Compare expected print volume, scan volume, scan-to-destination workflows, device count, and administrator time. Quantum-resistant firmware is one security attribute; it should not replace capacity, uptime, access-control, and fleet-management requirements.

- Patented Anti-Tamper Security: Prevent check fraud by utilizing an extra layer of security to your printed checks. TROY’s MICR Toner Secure releases a red dye whenever chemical alteration is attempted, voiding the check.
- Precision-Matched: TROY’s unique manufacturing and testing process has produced a precision-matched toner for each specific printing machine. This helps maintain optimum laser printer performance.
- Prevent Toner Scraping: Toner scraping attempts are commonly used to commit check fraud. Because of the high adhesion of our toner, this type of fraud is nearly impossible to commit.
- MICR Readability: Printed checks using TROY toner result in high readability and legibility that not only meets but exceeds all ANSI and ABA banking standards.
- HP OEM: In 1993, TROY became authorized by HP to enhance HP Printers and consumables for use in secure check and document printing. TROY is now the only HP OEM partner authorized to modify HP printers and supplies for secure print applications.
4. Request evidence for the exact configuration
Ask HP for the applicable security guide, supported firmware versions, update-signing details, lifecycle commitments, and any third-party evaluation for the model being purchased. The public announcements alone do not validate every regional configuration or provide an independent effectiveness assessment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the timing matters
HP cites a forecast attributed to experts through the Global Risk Institute: a quantum computer capable of attacking today’s asymmetric cryptography could have up to a 34% chance of existing by 2034. That is a forward-looking expert estimate, not an observed probability, a guaranteed deadline, or a prediction that a cryptographic break will occur in that year.
Long-lived equipment creates a “harvest now, decrypt later” concern: information captured today can potentially be attacked later if it remains valuable and protected by vulnerable cryptography. Firmware integrity is a logical place to begin because printers can be difficult to replace or update once deployed, but it is only one layer of a broader migration.

What HP executives say
“As innovation progresses towards more powerful quantum computers, it is urgent to prepare for the threat this represents to the asymmetric cryptography we depend on in our daily digital lives. This starts with migrating systems that cannot be updated easily once deployed. After the introduction of quantum-resistant firmware integrity protection in PCs last year, today we are announcing the launch of printers with similar capability to protect against future quantum computing threats.”
This is a vendor executive’s explanation of HP’s strategy, not an independent assessment of the printers’ security.
The Bottom Line
HP’s announcement is best understood as quantum-resistant protection for printer firmware signatures and early BIOS integrity. It is a meaningful hardware-rooted improvement for long-lived business devices, but it is not evidence that the printer’s entire data path or every encryption function is quantum-proof. Choose between HP’s Pro and Enterprise lines based first on management, volume, and workflow requirements, then verify the exact security coverage and availability for the configuration you plan to buy.
