HP’s May 27, 2015 acquisition of ConteXtream was intended to strengthen its carrier-network virtualization strategy by adding an open, carrier-grade software-defined networking (SDN) fabric and controller to HP’s existing NFV work. ConteXtream was already an HP OpenNFV partner, so the deal combined an established relationship with technology aimed at connecting and steering virtualized network functions.
What HP acquired
Contemporary reporting by Data Center Knowledge described ConteXtream, a Mountain View, California company, as a provider of an OpenDaylight-based, carrier-grade SDN fabric for network functions virtualization (NFV). The report said ConteXtream would join HP’s Communications Solutions Business when the transaction closed. The same account characterized ConteXtream’s open SDN controller platform as complementary to HP’s NFV expertise.
The Register reported that ConteXtream’s portfolio included ContexNet, ContexView and ContexWare. It also said HP’s announcement highlighted service function chaining—the ability to direct traffic through a specified sequence of virtual network services, such as firewalls, load balancers or intrusion-prevention functions.
NFV and SDN in plain English
Network functions virtualization (NFV)
NFV moves network functions that traditionally ran on dedicated appliances into software running on standard, general-purpose infrastructure. A carrier can then instantiate, scale or retire functions through software rather than installing a separate hardware box for every service.

- TRAFFIC OPTIMIZATION: Supports IEEE 802.3x flow control and advanced traffic optimization technology to reduce data bottlenecks and ensure smooth, efficient data transfer across your network
Software-defined networking (SDN)
SDN separates network-control decisions from the packet-forwarding hardware. A controller maintains a broader view of the network and programs forwarding behavior through software interfaces. In an NFV environment, that control layer helps connect virtual machines or containers, apply policies and steer traffic between services.
NFV and SDN are related but not interchangeable: NFV describes how network functions are delivered, while SDN describes how connectivity and control can be programmed. HP’s stated rationale was that ConteXtream supplied the SDN control and fabric capabilities needed to make a larger NFV architecture work coherently.

Why ConteXtream fit HP’s OpenNFV strategy
It filled the control-and-connectivity layer
HP had been developing an OpenNFV effort focused on virtualized communications infrastructure. ConteXtream added an open SDN controller and fabric designed for carrier environments, giving HP a way to coordinate virtual network functions across that environment rather than treating each function as an isolated software package.
The relationship already existed
According to Data Center Knowledge, ConteXtream was already an HP OpenNFV partner before the acquisition. That made the purchase an expansion of an existing technology and ecosystem relationship, not an unrelated entry into NFV.

Service chaining made the fit practical
Service function chaining is important to carrier services because traffic often needs to pass through several virtual functions in a defined order. The Register’s account connected HP’s announcement with this capability, indicating that the acquisition addressed orchestration and traffic-steering requirements as well as basic network connectivity.
What the deal added, and what remains unproven
| Strategic question | What the available reporting supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier-grade SDN control | ConteXtream supplied an OpenDaylight-based SDN controller and fabric aimed at carrier NFV deployments. | Measured throughput, latency, reliability results or comparative technical performance. |
| Fit with HP OpenNFV | ConteXtream was already an HP OpenNFV partner, and HP described its SDN platform as complementary to HP’s NFV expertise. | A detailed product map showing which HP components were replaced, retained or merged. |
| Service orchestration | The Register reported that HP’s announcement emphasized service function chaining. | Specific customer deployments, use cases or production scale. |
| Post-deal integration | In an HPE 2015 Securities Analyst Meeting transcript, CEO Meg Whitman said, “We also successfully integrated several targeted acquisitions and integrations, including Voltage, ConteXtream, Stackato, and, of course, Aruba.” | How ConteXtream products were branded, maintained, sold or technically integrated, and whether the deal produced financial or market-share gains. |
How to interpret the 2015 announcement
The acquisition was a strategic capability purchase. HP was assembling the software layers required to offer carrier-focused virtualization: virtual network functions on one side and programmable connectivity, policy and service chaining on the other. ConteXtream’s open SDN approach also fit the interoperability goals implied by HP’s OpenNFV program.

That rationale should not be confused with a documented business outcome. The available sources do not report a purchase price, customer count, revenue contribution, deployment total, market-share change or quantified return on investment. They establish why HP said the technology was complementary, not that the acquisition had already delivered a measurable commercial result.

Whitman’s statement provides a high-level status update: HPE regarded ConteXtream as successfully integrated by the time of the 2015 securities analyst meeting. It does not specify whether ContexNet, ContexView and ContexWare continued under those names, which HP products absorbed their functions, or how customers were supported. Any more detailed account would require additional company documentation beyond the cited reports and transcript.

Bottom line for readers
HP acquired ConteXtream to add carrier-grade, OpenDaylight-based SDN control and service-fabric capabilities to its NFV strategy. Because ConteXtream was already an OpenNFV partner, the purchase reinforced HP’s communications-business architecture rather than creating a new direction. The evidence supports that strategic fit and a later statement that integration was successful; it does not establish the deal’s price, technical benchmarks, customer impact or financial return.
