Bitfone’s products helped wireless operators and handset makers update handset firmware over the air and manage devices; HP later described the company as focused on “managing remote devices.” The sources establish the agreement month and that the acquisition had been made by May 2007, but not the exact closing date or financial terms.
What happened when HP acquired Bitfone?
HP’s 2006 annual report said it had agreed in December 2006 to acquire Bitfone Corporation, a privately held software and services company developing mobile device-management solutions for the wireless industry. The filing described the transaction as pending. In remarks on May 8, 2007, HP Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Technology Officer Shane Robison referred to Bitfone as an acquisition HP had made recently.
Robison placed Bitfone within HP’s Personal Systems Group and said it was “all about managing remote devices.” The later remarks corroborate that the deal had been completed by then, but neither they nor the annual report establish the precise closing date or purchase price. What did Bitfone’s software do?
Firmware updates over the air
Bitfone’s mProve product supported firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates: operators and handset manufacturers could use it to deliver handset software updates remotely rather than relying on customers to bring devices in for servicing. In February 2006, UK wireless operator 3 selected mProve as its OMA standards-based device-management solution for over-the-air firmware updates. This is a reported customer selection, not an independent evaluation of the product. Bitfone’s announcement about 3.

The product descriptions and customer announcement cite uses including provisioning, diagnostics and management of firmware-update processes. In June 2006, Kyocera Wireless selected Bitfone’s client suite for OMA device management and FOTA support on its mobile devices.
