YouTube’s published standard for eligible public live streams is a creator share of 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue, under the Watch Page Monetization Module. It is not 55% of every ad opportunity or a guaranteed payout: ads may not serve, and revenue depends on actual delivery and viewing conditions. Fan-funding features such as Super Chat and channel memberships use a separate published share.
What YouTube’s 55% live ad share means
YouTube says partners receive 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page after accepting the Watch Page Monetization Module. The published rate also applies when public videos are streamed in the YouTube Video Player on other sites or apps. Your own agreement in YouTube Studio governs your account, so check it if you need to confirm the terms that apply to you. YouTube’s partner earnings overview explains the published shares and agreement caveat.
The 55% figure is a share of qualifying net ad revenue—not 55% of all money associated with a stream, a fixed amount per view, or a promise that an ad will appear. Transaction taxes such as sales tax, VAT, and GST are excluded from Google’s revenue for this calculation.
Why the share does not predict a stream’s payout
Three conditions matter: the channel must be eligible and monetized, the relevant monetization module must be accepted, and an ad must actually be served. YouTube’s ad systems decide whether an available slot receives an ad. As YouTube puts it, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” A viewer who gets no ad continues watching; a viewer who receives an ad rejoins the stream after it ends or is skipped.

Mid-roll ads
Mid-rolls can appear during the stream as standard full-screen or side-by-side ads on eligible streams. Streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads. You can choose among automatic, scheduled, and manual approaches:
| Approach | How it works | Useful consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube places breaks at natural breakpoints. Creators can select low, medium, or high frequency. | YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls. Its automatic system includes measures to limit interruptions for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze ads during high-engagement moments. |
| Scheduled | Set breaks at intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | YouTube cautions that scheduled selection may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode; ads are still not guaranteed to serve. |
| Manual | Insert breaks from the Live Control Room. | YouTube cautions that manual selection may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode. A manual break already placed will still display during an automatic-mid-roll delay. |
In the Live Control Room, creators can delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. That delay does not cancel a manual ad break that has already been placed. The interval and control details above are from YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

What YouTube’s uplift figure does—and does not—say
YouTube reported an “over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour” in January 2024. It compared average in-stream revenue per hour for channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled against channels without the feature, across 207 countries. This is YouTube’s reported average comparison, not an earnings forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.
Live ads and fan funding use different shares
Do not apply the 55% Watch Page ad share to fan payments. Under the Commerce Product Module, YouTube publishes a 70% share of net revenue for channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks when the module and features are enabled. Those are separate products with a separate revenue basis. YouTube also lists Shopping as a live monetization option for eligible YouTube Partner Program creators, but the sources here do not establish one universal Shopping revenue-share rate. YouTube’s partner earnings overview and module guidance describe these distinctions.

Sponsorships and merchandise are also not the Watch Page ad share; evaluate them separately rather than adding them to the 55% rate.

- CPM is advertiser-focused: cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share.
- RPM is creator-focused and reflects revenue after the revenue share across reported sources, including ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers.
Because RPM combines sources and uses a different perspective than CPM, neither metric is the contractual 55% share rate. For definitions, see YouTube’s ad revenue analytics help; for the Live filter, see its live-stream guidance.
Keeping a prerecorded stream running does not change the share
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream built from uploaded recordings rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube. It does not alter YouTube’s revenue-share terms or guarantee ad delivery. Learn more at StreamNeo; its first day is free with no card at StreamNeo registration.
Bottom line
For eligible public live streams, YouTube’s published Watch Page standard is 55% of net ad revenue under the applicable module. Treat that as the contractual share—not an earnings promise. Actual ad revenue depends on eligibility, ad delivery, and viewers’ experiences; fan-funding follows a separate published 70% net-revenue share for listed Commerce Product Module features.
