What YouTube live-stream revenue comes from
Keep these revenue sources separate. They use different features and are reported in ways that do not translate into a guaranteed amount for each view.

YouTube says there is no guaranteed payment amount under the YouTube Partner agreement; earnings are generated from a share of advertising revenue associated with viewers watching the video. YouTube Partner earnings overview.
How ads are served during a live stream
Your channel must be monetized, and monetization must be enabled for the live stream, before YouTube can serve ads. When live-stream monetization is turned on, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled. Mid-rolls can appear during the broadcast as fullscreen or side-by-side ads. Side-by-side placement is automatic on eligible streams; streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads. Details and settings are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Ad delivery remains conditional. YouTube’s systems decide which available slots receive ads, with the stated aim of balancing viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. A viewer who does not receive an ad continues watching the stream; a viewer who sees an ad returns to the stream when it ends or when they skip it. Choosing automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls
YouTube offers three approaches. The choice affects timing and control, not whether an ad will definitely be served.

Automatic mode includes several viewer-experience controls: it limits ad disruption to channel members, temporarily pauses mid-rolls for viewers who send gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snoozes mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. In Live Control Room, you can delay automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes; manually placed ads still display when that delay is enabled. What YouTube’s uplift figure means
YouTube Help reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour. YouTube describes this as a January 2024 comparison of average instream revenue per hour between channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads and channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. It is a platform-reported group comparison, not a forecast for an individual channel or a promise that automatic ads will increase your earnings by that amount.

How YouTube Premium revenue works
Watch Page views include playback pages on YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids dedicated to long-form or live-streaming videos. To earn advertising and Premium revenue from eligible long-form or live-streaming Watch Page views—including eligible embeds in the YouTube player on other sites—creators must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube describes Premium revenue as a share of the fee paid by a Premium subscriber when that subscriber watches the creator’s content. It does not publish a fixed per-view payout in the cited guidance. See YouTube’s monetization options.
Memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers
Fan funding is distinct from ad and Premium revenue. Channel memberships are recurring payments in exchange for creator-defined perks. Super Chat and Super Stickers are paid live-chat features. Access to these features and the applicable terms depend on YouTube’s Commerce Product Module and individual feature eligibility. How to read live-stream revenue metrics
RPM and CPM answer different questions, so do not use one as a substitute for the other.
- RPM is creator-focused: revenue reported in Analytics after revenue share per thousand views. For videos, it includes all views; listed revenue sources include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers.
- CPM is advertiser-focused: it covers ads and Premium, counts monetized playbacks, and is before revenue share.
Neither metric alone tells the full revenue story. YouTube explains these definitions in Understand ad revenue analytics.

Practical mid-roll choices for different streams
- For a stream with natural pauses: automatic mid-rolls let YouTube try to use those moments, with a frequency preference you can set.
- For a tightly timed program: scheduled intervals provide a recurring structure, though ads may still not fill each slot.
- For a broadcast where the host must control interruptions: manual breaks put timing in your hands, but you need to place them during the broadcast.
- For a high-engagement moment: automatic mode can snooze mid-rolls for viewers during those moments; this is a system feature, not a guarantee that every interruption is avoided.
Consider the stream’s format and audience experience alongside earning potential. YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls, but its guidance does not establish a universally best choice for every broadcast.
