Windows Central reported that the feature became available to all players on September 29, 2026; Xbox first announced it for Insiders on August 26, 2026. How Xbox Disc-to-Digital works
You insert an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a supported Xbox console and launch the game. If the disc and title qualify and the license is successfully claimed, Microsoft grants a “limited access digital license.” The game can then be installed and played without the disc inserted, according to Microsoft’s Usage Rules and Windows Central’s account of the feature.
- Use a supported Xbox console with a disc drive and insert the qualifying Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc.
- Launch the game and complete the claim if the console offers the license.
- Install and launch the game digitally. The disc does not need to remain in the console for play after the license is claimed.
Xbox’s August 26 announcement described the claim process as inserting a supported disc into a supported console and launching the game. Exact prompts may depend on the title and console; the available sources do not specify a universal menu path.
What you must keep, and what can revoke access
The digital license remains conditional on your continued possession of the qualifying physical disc. It is not a separate digital purchase that can be transferred independently. Microsoft says it may revalidate eligibility and suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess the disc; it may also add or remove disc eligibility under its Usage Rules.

In practical terms, do not sell or give away the disc expecting to keep the digital access. Windows Central reported that another person may claim access after installing from a lent or sold disc, and that the original holder’s access may be revoked until the disc is returned or the game is purchased again. That is reported behavior; Microsoft’s formal rule is the broader continued-possession condition.
Which games and consoles are supported?
Support is title-specific. Xbox said most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games were supported, while also warning that not every title would be available at launch. It described the initial catalog as “thousands of titles,” not as a promise that a particular disc will work. Microsoft says eligibility can vary for technical, licensing, publishing, and other reasons, and can change over time.

Windows Central reported selected Ubisoft and SEGA games among those supported on September 29, 2026. It also cited the community-maintained XCT.live database as listing 1,585 compatible games and 205 unsupported games on that date. Those figures are a dated community count reported by Windows Central, not an official Microsoft total or a current guarantee.
Microsoft’s rules specify supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game discs and a supported Xbox console. Check both the game’s current eligibility and your console’s disc-drive capability; “Xbox disc” alone does not establish compatibility.

How it compares with disc play and a digital purchase

Microsoft’s general digital-game and Play Anywhere terms are in the same Usage Rules page. Disc-to-Digital should not be confused with buying an independent digital copy.
Play Anywhere, cloud gaming, and delisted titles
Where the title supports them, the claimed license may also enable Xbox ecosystem features such as Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming. These are not automatic benefits for every eligible disc: the game and relevant service must support them, as Xbox’s announcement and Microsoft’s Usage Rules qualify.

Windows Central reported examples of delisted games becoming digitally playable through a qualifying physical copy. That demonstrates a possible benefit for particular titles, not a promise that every delisted game can be claimed or will remain available indefinitely.

Xbox VP Next Generation Jason Ronald called the program part of the company’s “broader commitment to game preservation” in the August 26, 2026 announcement. For players, the practical preservation benefit is improved access and convenience for some physical games: a qualifying disc can provide a way to install and play without repeatedly inserting it, and may help with certain titles that are no longer sold digitally.

It is not a guarantee of permanent or universal access. The arrangement still depends on retaining the disc, an eligible title, supported hardware, and applicable account and service rules. Microsoft can change which discs qualify, so the feature complements physical ownership rather than replacing every limitation associated with it.
