The PC does the rendering; a streaming app compresses and transmits the frames, and the headset decodes and displays them. You need a compatible headset, a PC capable of running the game, suitable streaming software, and a reliable local network. For Steam Link, Wi-Fi 5 on 5 GHz is the stated minimum; Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is recommended, not universally required.
How wireless PC VR streaming works
The PC renders the game for the headset, then an app sends a compressed video stream across the local network. The headset receives and decodes that stream for display. The computer and headset therefore share the work: the PC must render and encode frames on time, and the network must deliver them consistently enough for the headset to display them.
Meta’s explanation of the wired Link architecture describes the PC compositor encoding eye textures as H.264 video. That is useful for understanding the general render, encode, and client roles, but it should not be taken to mean every wireless app uses the same codec or transmission method. Meta’s Air Link technical article describes adapting bitrate to Wi-Fi conditions and client-side techniques intended to mitigate transmission spikes.
In ordinary use, the path is PC → router → headset. The PC runs the VR application; the headset is a streaming client rather than the device running that PC VR game locally.

What hardware and software you need
A PC that can run your game
Requirements depend on the app, game, headset resolution, and performance target. Steam Link’s published requirements list Windows 10 or newer, Steam and SteamVR, an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better, and 16 GB of RAM recommended. Its listed GPU minimum is an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better; NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 6600 or better is recommended. These are Steam Link requirements, not a guarantee that every VR game will run well at every headset setting.
Virtual Desktop gives a separate, app-specific baseline: a VR-ready Windows PC for PC VR streaming, with a GTX 970 named on its requirements page. Check the requirements for the method and game you intend to use rather than treating one app’s figures as universal.

A headset supported by your streaming app
Compatibility is app-specific and can change. Steam Link names Meta Quest and consumer HTC Vive Focus or PICO headsets; its support page says business headsets are not officially supported. Virtual Desktop lists Meta Quest, PICO, HTC Vive Focus, Play for Dream MR, and Samsung Galaxy XR. Confirm that the exact headset model appears on the current app listing before buying hardware or planning setup.
A suitable local Wi-Fi network
Steam Link specifies a router using a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as its minimum. Valve recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. VRChat’s Quest guidance also prefers a Wi-Fi 6/6E router for optimal streaming. Virtual Desktop specifies a 5 GHz AC or AX router. These are different apps’ requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Wi-Fi generation will produce smooth streaming.

Router placement, signal quality at the headset, the PC-to-router connection, and other wireless traffic can all matter. The cited setup documentation does not establish one universal latency or throughput target that guarantees a successful experience.
A wired connection from the PC to the router
A practical layout is PC → Ethernet → router → Wi-Fi → headset. Valve recommends connecting the PC to the router by wire, and Virtual Desktop calls for a wired PC connection. This avoids sending the PC’s stream traffic over a second wireless hop in a typical arrangement. An Ethernet cable is only relevant if the PC is not already wired.

Streaming software on both ends
Choose a route supported by both the PC and headset. Steam Link needs Steam and SteamVR on the PC. Air Link is Meta’s wireless PC-to-Quest route. Virtual Desktop uses its PC Streamer together with its headset app. Their compatibility and setup needs differ; the available documentation does not establish a universal quality winner among them.

Before choosing, check the exact headset model, whether the method fits the PC game and runtime you use, the app’s network guidance, and any desktop-streaming features you need. These products’ documented requirements are more useful for matching a setup than assuming one is best for everyone.

Does wireless PC VR require fast internet?
The setup described by these apps is a local connection among the PC, router, and headset, so a high-speed internet subscription is not universally required just to stream locally. Valve’s Steam Link announcement labels broadband internet as recommended, not required. Remote access and online multiplayer may have separate internet needs; they are distinct from the local PC-to-headset stream.
Do you need Wi-Fi 6 or a new router?
Not necessarily. Steam Link’s documented minimum is Wi-Fi 5 on 5 GHz, while Valve recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. Other apps may state different requirements. If your existing router meets the chosen app’s requirements and provides a reliable connection where you play, the documentation does not imply that you must replace it. A newer router alone also cannot compensate for a PC that struggles to render the game or for problems elsewhere in the network path.
Is a USB cable required?
No, not for the wireless methods described here. Meta Link’s architecture article concerns a wired USB connection; Air Link, Steam Link, and Virtual Desktop provide wireless routes. A Link cable is an alternative connection from PC to headset, not a requirement for wireless streaming.
