After you ask for a movie, for example, “Is it suitable for kids?” can be understood as a question about that movie. Context makes natural follow-ups possible, but it does not guarantee the assistant has chosen the right subject.
What context means in a voice conversation
A spoken sentence can be ambiguous or incomplete on its own. In “How many people can that feed?”, the word “that” needs an earlier mention—perhaps a cake—to make sense. Google’s conversation-design guidance describes how a previous turn can identify a pronoun’s referent, while location or visible screen content can also help establish meaning.
Context is the information that fills in those gaps: earlier turns, entities already mentioned, the current task, likely intent, and sometimes location or what is displayed on a screen. It helps the assistant interpret what you mean rather than treating every utterance as an isolated command.
How an assistant can interpret a follow-up
Suppose you say, “Find a movie for tonight.” After the assistant suggests one, you ask, “Is it suitable for kids?” The follow-up omits the movie’s name. To respond in context, the assistant must connect “it” to the movie under discussion and interpret the new question as being about that movie.

Amazon’s documentation for Alexa Conversations describes one way a skill can support this kind of exchange. It identifies named entities in an utterance, predicts what action should happen next, and uses entities from the conversation context to fill arguments in a requested action. Amazon characterizes the context memory for this technology as short-term and maintained for a session. These are details of Alexa Conversations, not a universal description of how every voice assistant works.
Google’s conversation-design guidance also describes follow-up intents and references to pronouns, locations, and screen contents. A Google Research example shows a follow-up being rephrased using both the subject and answer from the previous query. Together, these examples illustrate the basic idea: the assistant uses what is already established to interpret what a new phrase leaves unstated.

Why you can ask without repeating everything
Once an assistant has a relevant subject in the conversation, you can often ask about it with a shorter phrase. Amazon’s example has someone discuss a cake and then ask how many people “that” cake feeds. Google’s conversation guide gives a follow-up example in which “What about a half dozen?” depends on an earlier question about roses.
Amazon’s natural-speech guidance puts the design goal this way: “Hold context within the conversation; don’t make the customer re-state or re-confirm details.” That is a design principle, not a promise that every follow-up will be resolved correctly. When more than one possible subject is active, repeating or clarifying the subject may still be necessary.

Does a voice assistant keep listening for context?
Listening for a follow-up and understanding what that follow-up means are related but separate functions. Google describes Continued Conversation on supported Pixel 4 and later devices, including Fold, as listening for follow-up questions for about 10 seconds. Eligibility depends on specified languages and regions. Google says this feature uses voice and sensor signals—including gyroscope, acceleration, and rotation signals—to determine whether the person is continuing. That 10-second window applies to this particular feature; it is not a general limit on how long all assistants can use conversation context.
The same Google documentation says the sensor signals used for this feature are processed on the device, while audio may be sent to Google servers if the system detects that the conversation is continuing. Amazon’s device FAQ describes Follow Up Mode as allowing further requests without repeating the wake word on compatible setups. Amazon’s UK privacy page says a recording of a request is sent to Amazon’s cloud for processing and a text transcript is created as part of that processing. These descriptions apply to the named platforms and features; they do not establish what every assistant stores, sends, or retains.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Context used to interpret a conversation should not be confused with a blanket claim about how long recordings, transcripts, or other account activity are stored. The cited feature descriptions explain particular processing behavior, not a single retention rule for all devices and services.

A pronoun such as “it” may refer to more than one thing mentioned earlier. You might switch topics, correct a detail, answer only part of a question, or give extra information before the assistant asks for it. If the system drops relevant earlier turns, it can misunderstand a follow-up; if it carries the wrong subject forward, it can also answer incorrectly.

Google’s guidance discusses the risk of interpreting a follow-up without the larger conversation. Amazon’s design guidance recommends handling over-answers, under-answers, and corrections while retaining relevant context. In practice, useful recovery means the assistant can ask which subject you mean, accept a correction, or let you restate the request without forcing you to start the whole exchange again.
Amazon describes natural language understanding as the ability of computers to “deduce what a speaker actually means, and not just the words they say.” Context can help with that inference, but the official materials cited here do not establish a current accuracy percentage or a comparative ranking of Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri.
