The 16-team event uses four GSL groups, each containing one team from each territory; the top two teams in each group advance to an eight-team double-elimination playoff.
How do teams qualify for VALORANT Champions in 2026?
The 2026 League Handbook allocates 16 Champions places evenly: four per territory. In each territory, the top two Stage 2 Playoffs finishers qualify, as do the territory’s two leading Championship Point earners. The governing source is the official 2026 League Handbook.
This is a Champions qualification rule, not the route every team takes to enter a VCT league. Challengers teams, for example, may have a separate regional path into league-stage competition; the 2026 Americas Challengers LCQ explanation describes a route through VCT Americas Play-Ins. That pathway should not be mistaken for an additional Champions slot.
What are the two qualification routes?
| Route | How a team earns a place | What determines it |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 2 Playoffs | Finish among the territory’s top two teams in Stage 2 Playoffs. | Placement in that territory’s playoff bracket. |
| Championship Points | Finish among the territory’s two leading Championship Point earners. | Accumulated season results under that territory’s rules. |
The routes reward different things: a high finish in the decisive Stage 2 playoff, or a strong enough season-long record to place among the region’s leading point earners. They are both regional routes; the handbook’s allocation does not establish one universal points tie-break procedure for every territory.

Does winning Stage 2 qualify a team?
A top-two Stage 2 Playoffs finish secures a territory’s playoff-based Champions place. The sources establish the top-two allocation, not a separate guarantee that winning Stage 2 changes the number of places available to that territory. EMEA offers a concrete example: its official Stage 2 announcement says the final determines EMEA’s top seed, while the third and fourth Champions seeds are decided by season-long Championship Points. That is an EMEA example, not proof that every region uses identical placement and tie-break details.
How do Championship Points help teams qualify?
Points provide a season-long qualification route: each territory’s two leading point earners receive its points-based Champions places. For the exact point standings, eligibility, or tie-breaks applicable to a particular team, consult that territory’s official rules and current standings rather than assuming a single global formula. Riot publishes the live Champions Shanghai standings; standings and tournament results can change while the event is in progress.

How are Champions groups seeded?
Riot’s official Champions Shanghai event explainer describes four GSL groups, each with one representative from each of the four territories. This establishes the groups’ regional composition, but the official summaries do not set out a universal ranking formula that seeds every team by strength or Championship Points. Do not infer that points alone determine the group draw.
Each group plays a GSL-style stage. Matches are best-of-three, and a team is eliminated after two losses. The top two teams from each group—eight teams total—move on to the playoff bracket.

What happens after the group stage?
The eight group-stage qualifiers enter a double-elimination playoff. A team remains in contention after its first playoff loss but is eliminated after its second. Under the 2026 League Handbook, playoff matches are best-of-three except the lower final and grand final, which are best-of-five. Check the handbook for the season’s official match-format details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are these also the 2027 rules?
No: the allocation and format above describe the 2026 season. Riot’s April 8, 2026 VCT format announcement says that beginning in 2027, the path to Masters and Champions will start with Open Qualifiers available to teams worldwide. Riot also said some regional qualification details would follow, so that announcement should not be treated as a complete 2027 Champions slot or seeding rulebook.
