US enterprise technology budgets influence Indian IT stocks mainly through demand for cloud migration, cybersecurity, data platforms, engineering and artificial-intelligence services. A larger pipeline can lift bookings, utilization, revenue and earnings expectations. A weaker rupee can add a second benefit by increasing the rupee value of dollar revenue and, in some circumstances, operating margins.
Neither relationship is automatic. Discretionary projects may be delayed, hedges can postpone or reduce currency gains, offshore costs and wages can rise, and interest rates, foreign flows, valuation multiples or geopolitical risk can overwhelm operating improvements in the share price. The useful approach is to treat US spending as a leading demand signal, USD/INR as a financial lever, and each company’s mix and valuation as the deciding factors.
How US technology spending reaches an Indian IT company’s earnings
Most large Indian IT exporters sell services to US enterprises, either directly or through global contracts. The transmission from a US budget announcement to an Indian stock return usually follows several stages:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Budget approval: A US company allocates money to technology programs such as cloud migration, cybersecurity, data modernization, application engineering or AI implementation.
- Vendor selection and contracting: Indian providers compete for the work. A signed contract or a growing order pipeline is more informative than a broad statement that technology spending will rise.
- Delivery and staffing: Revenue appears as projects are delivered. Utilization, offshore staffing, subcontractor use and pricing determine how much of that revenue becomes operating profit.
- Guidance and expectations: Investors change earnings estimates when management discusses bookings, deal momentum, project starts or cancellations. The stock can move before reported revenue changes.
Spending is not uniform. Cloud infrastructure, security and regulatory programs may be funded even when discretionary application work is postponed. A customer can therefore increase its overall technology budget while reducing the portion available to an Indian provider’s most exposed service line.

What the current spending figures do—and do not—tell you
NASSCOM’s Quarterly Industry Review – June 2025, citing IDC, estimated that global IT-services spending would grow 5% in 2025 and projected 5.2% growth in 2026. These are global IT-services figures, not forecasts for US spending alone. They establish a constructive industry backdrop, but they do not identify which Indian company will win the work, when projects will begin or how much profit will be retained.
| Indicator | Figure | Qualification | Investor use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global IT-services spending, 2025 | 5% estimated growth | NASSCOM review published June 2025, citing IDC | Broad sector demand context, not a US-only forecast |
| Global IT-services spending, 2026 | 5.2% projected growth | Projection in the same June 2025 review | Forward backdrop; actual growth can differ |
| Infosys operating-margin sensitivity | Approximately 0.44% for each 1% rupee move against the US dollar | FY2026 Form 20-F; company-specific incremental operating-margin effect | Illustrates sensitivity, not a sector-wide coefficient |
Use the spending figures as a starting hypothesis. Confirm it with company-level evidence such as large-deal wins, order-book conversion, client commentary and management guidance. A market can price in an optimistic global forecast well before an Indian provider reports growth.
How USD/INR changes revenue and margins
Indian IT companies commonly invoice international clients in US dollars while reporting financial statements in rupees. When the rupee depreciates against the dollar, each dollar of revenue converts into more rupees. If a similar share of costs remains in rupees, reported revenue and operating profit receive a translation benefit. Rupee appreciation has the opposite effect.

Contract repricing, hedges, wage changes and the mix of offshore and onsite work can change the outcome.

Translation versus economic exposure
Translation exposure is the accounting effect of converting dollar revenue into rupees. It can appear even when the underlying dollar price and volume are unchanged. Economic exposure reflects competitiveness and costs: a weaker rupee may make an India-delivered service cheaper in dollar terms, but employees, subcontractors, travel and overseas facilities can also become more expensive. A company with substantial US-dollar costs receives less net benefit than one with a predominantly rupee cost base.
Why hedging changes the timing
Companies use forward contracts and other hedges to reduce exchange-rate uncertainty. A hedge locks in a rate for a future cash flow, so an immediate spot-market move may not flow through earnings at once. Hedge coverage, maturity dates and the rate at which contracts were entered determine how much of a depreciation benefit is recognized in a particular quarter. Hedge gains or losses can also affect reported financial results separately from the underlying client billing.
Why a stronger dollar does not guarantee an Indian IT stock rally
A favorable USD/INR move can be outweighed by weaker demand, lower pricing or a falling valuation multiple. Investors often sell an IT stock after a rupee depreciation if management cuts growth guidance, reports project delays or signals that clients are protecting budgets. Conversely, a company can rise during rupee appreciation if bookings and margins beat expectations.

- Demand surprise: A slowdown in US discretionary projects can reduce future revenue more than currency translation adds to current revenue.
- Pricing pressure: Clients may renegotiate rates or shift work among vendors, passing less of the currency benefit to the provider.
- Cost inflation: Wage increases, retention bonuses, subcontractor rates and travel costs can absorb a weaker-rupee gain.
- Hedge mismatch: Existing hedges may have been booked at less favorable rates, or their maturities may not match the period of revenue recognition.
- Interest rates and valuation: Higher global rates can compress the price investors will pay for long-duration growth stocks even when current earnings are stable.
- Execution or concentration risk: A delayed transformation program or a large-client problem can dominate sector-level currency support.

North-American revenue share
A company with a larger North-American contribution generally has greater sensitivity to US budgets and USD/INR. Read the filing’s geographic revenue disclosure and distinguish North America from Europe, Asia-Pacific and India. A high US share increases both opportunity and concentration risk.
Discretionary and recurring work
Application development, consulting and transformation programs can be postponed when clients tighten budgets. Managed services, infrastructure operations and regulatory or security work may be more recurring, although no category is immune to reprioritization. Wipro’s FY2026 filing specifically discusses uncertainty affecting discretionary spending, a reminder that headline technology budgets do not equal immediately billable work.
Industry and client concentration
Banking, financial services, healthcare, retail, manufacturing and communications follow different investment cycles. A provider concentrated in a pressured vertical can lag a diversified peer even when aggregate US spending is healthy. Check whether a few clients account for a material share of revenue and whether those clients are cutting or expanding technology programs.

Billing currency and cost currency
Review the proportion of revenue billed in dollars and the location of delivery costs. Offshore delivery tends to place more costs in rupees; onsite delivery places more costs in dollars or other local currencies. Subcontracting can add a dollar-linked cost that reduces the benefit of rupee depreciation.

Hedge coverage and maturity
Read the derivatives note for the amount and tenor of outstanding hedges, then compare it with expected cash flows. Two companies with similar dollar revenue can report different currency effects because their hedge books were created at different rates.
Margin trend and growth quality
Track operating margin alongside revenue growth, utilization, attrition, subcontractor expense and employee costs. A one-quarter margin lift caused by currency is less durable than improvement supported by better utilization, pricing or a higher-value service mix.
Domestic diversification and valuation
Domestic revenue can reduce direct dependence on US budgets, although it may also have different margins and growth rates. Finally, compare valuation with expected growth. A highly valued stock can fall on a merely good result if the market expected an exceptional one.

- Start with Nifty IT: Use the index as a sector benchmark for the period you are studying. If the index rises while one stock falls, investigate company-specific news; if all constituents move together, macro factors may be dominant.
- Map geographic exposure: Record North-American revenue share and the latest change. Separate client location from delivery location because they affect demand and costs differently.
- Classify demand: Read management commentary for bookings, large deals, project starts, cancellations and discretionary versus recurring work. Look for conversion into revenue rather than relying only on contract-announcement value.
- Inspect currency sensitivity: Note dollar billing, rupee and dollar costs, hedge coverage, hedge maturity and any stated sensitivity. Keep the Infosys 0.44% figure confined to Infosys unless another company provides its own estimate.
- Test margin durability: Compare operating-margin movement with utilization, wage inflation, subcontractor costs, pricing and service mix. Ask whether the change would remain if USD/INR stopped moving.
- Check concentration and execution: Identify major verticals, clients and programs. A single delayed transformation can outweigh a favorable sector forecast.
- Compare valuation and expectations: Review the price-to-earnings or other valuation measure against the company’s growth, margin and guidance. A currency tailwind may already be reflected in the price.
- Separate sector beta from company alpha: Compare the stock’s return with Nifty IT, USD/INR and relevant market indices over the same dates, then read the filing and earnings commentary for the residual difference.

The two main drivers can reinforce each other or move in opposite directions. The following framework describes the direction of pressure, not a forecast of any particular company’s return.

| US technology demand | USD/INR | Likely operating pressure | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strengthening | Rupee depreciates | Most supportive combination for a dollar-heavy exporter, subject to hedges and costs | Bookings, utilization, pricing and hedge realization |
| Strengthening | Rupee appreciates | Revenue demand can improve while translation and margin support weaken | Organic growth versus currency-adjusted growth |
| Weakening or delayed | Rupee depreciates | Currency may cushion reported results, but weaker future volumes can dominate | Discretionary pipeline, cancellations and guidance |
| Weakening or delayed | Rupee appreciates | Most difficult combination for an export-heavy, discretionary-work provider | Cost actions, recurring revenue and balance-sheet resilience |
Why stocks can fall while US technology budgets grow
First, the published spending figure may be global rather than US-specific, as with the NASSCOM/IDC estimates. Second, aggregate budgets can grow while spending shifts toward products or internal teams that an Indian vendor does not provide. Third, enterprises may approve programs but delay production deployment, so bookings do not convert into near-term revenue.
Markets also discount the future. If investors expected growth above the eventual outcome, a stock can decline on a reported increase. Rising bond yields can reduce technology-sector multiples; risk-off foreign selling can pressure the entire Nifty IT index; and geopolitical developments can raise concerns about visas, cross-border delivery or client confidence. A company-specific margin miss, executive change or contract loss can matter more than a favorable dollar move.
Key risks to include in a return analysis
- US recession: Clients may freeze discretionary transformation and reduce vendor headcount.
- Project cancellation or delay: A signed intention is not the same as revenue recognized.
- Pricing pressure: Procurement savings programs can lower billing rates.
- Rupee volatility: Rapid two-way moves complicate budgeting and hedge management.
- Hedge mismatch: Contract timing can make reported results diverge from spot USD/INR.
- Wage and subcontractor inflation: Cost growth can absorb translation gains.
- Client concentration: A single large account can change the result for a quarter or a year.
- Geopolitical uncertainty: Trade restrictions, visa rules or regional conflicts can alter delivery economics.
- Valuation de-rating: Multiple compression can erase the benefit of higher earnings.
How to monitor the relationship over time
Build a dated series rather than reacting to one currency move. Track Nifty IT, the USD/INR rate, each company’s quarterly revenue growth, operating margin, bookings or large-deal commentary, utilization, attrition, hedge disclosures and valuation. The Reserve Bank of India exchange-rate series can provide a consistent currency reference, while company filings explain how much of the movement was hedged or offset by costs.
Compare the same reporting period across companies and distinguish reported growth from constant-currency growth where management provides it. If reported growth accelerates while constant-currency growth does not, currency is doing more of the work. If margins expand despite a neutral currency, investigate utilization, pricing or service mix for a potentially more durable improvement.
Finally, define the return window before drawing a conclusion. Over days or weeks, rates, foreign flows and sentiment often dominate. Over several quarters, client demand, delivery execution, margins and cash generation have more opportunity to appear in results. A sound analysis therefore uses US spending as a forward demand indicator, USD/INR as a conditional earnings lever, and company disclosures and valuation to decide whether the stock can convert those conditions into shareholder returns.
