UPI is a payment system that lets participating apps and banks move payment instructions between bank accounts. In a typical payment, the UPI ID is the recipient’s payment address, the bank account is where the money is held, the app is the interface, and the UPI PIN authorizes a debit. You do not enter a UPI PIN to receive money.

What is UPI?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) defines UPI as “an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an RBI regulated entity.” UPI was built over the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) infrastructure and launched in 2016 as a real-time inter-bank payment solution. See the NPCI UPI overview and NPCI UPI FAQ.

For the usual bank-linked payment, UPI is a payment rail, not a balance stored in the app: the payer’s linked bank account is debited and the recipient’s account is credited when the payment succeeds. Some UPI arrangements also support linked prepaid payment instrument (PPI) wallets, depending on the issuer and app.

What are the UPI ID, bank account, app, and PIN?

Part What it does
UPI ID (also called a Virtual Payment Address or payment address) Identifies where a payment should be routed. NPCI gives an example format such as xyz@upi; the handle after @ varies by provider.
Bank account Normally holds the funds that are debited from the payer or credited to the recipient. Where supported, an app can link multiple accounts. A payment may also be made using an account number and IFSC if the app offers that option.
Payment app or PSP Provides registration, account discovery, recipient selection, payment initiation, and transaction status. A payment service provider (PSP) participates in the UPI system; the bank maintains the account and processes its debit or credit.
UPI PIN A 4–6 digit code created during setup and used to authorize a transaction from a bank account. NPCI distinguishes it from a bank-issued MPIN.

A UPI ID is an address, not an account number or a store of money. An ID may be associated with an account, and some provider setups allow association with multiple accounts. Moving to another app may require registration again and a new UPI ID or handle; do not assume every app can keep an existing ID unchanged.

The mobile number verified during app setup needs to match the number linked to the bank account for the app to discover that account, according to NPCI. BHIM is one example of a UPI app: NPCI describes it as supporting bank-to-bank payments, pay and collect using a mobile number or VPA, and switching among linked accounts. This is a feature example, not a ranking of apps. See NPCI’s product information and BHIM product overview.

How does a typical UPI payment work?

  1. Register and link an account. Set up a participating UPI app or PSP and select an eligible bank account. The phone number verified in the app must match the number registered with the bank for account discovery.
  2. Choose the recipient. Select a saved contact, scan a QR code, or enter a UPI ID. Depending on the app, you may instead be able to provide an account number and IFSC. Check the displayed payee and amount before proceeding.
  3. Authorize the debit. Enter your UPI PIN to approve the payment. NPCI describes the PIN as the second factor in UPI’s authentication under applicable RBI guidelines. It authorizes a transaction; it is not needed to receive money.
  4. The instruction is handled through UPI and participating banks. The app displays a status, and if processing succeeds, the beneficiary bank credits the recipient. UPI is intended for instant transfers, but a particular transaction can fail or remain pending because of network, bank, or beneficiary-side problems.
  5. Confirm the result. Check the transaction status in the app and confirm with the recipient if needed. If your account was debited but the recipient was not credited, use the app’s complaint route or contact your bank before attempting the payment again.

Does UPI work 24/7, and what are the limits?

UPI is designed for payments at any time, not only during bank branch hours. However, a payment can still fail or show as pending. Limits are not identical for every payment: NPCI’s FAQ lists these ceilings, while the actual limit available to you can depend on transaction category, bank, app, and current rules.

Category NPCI FAQ limit
Normal UPI transaction Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction
Specified categories, including capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction
IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction

These figures are the limits stated in NPCI’s UPI FAQ, not a guarantee that a particular bank or app will allow the maximum. Check your provider’s current limit and category rules before making a large payment.

What should you do if a UPI payment is pending or failed?

  • Open the transaction details in the app and check whether it is pending, failed, or successful before paying again.
  • If the payer’s account is debited but the recipient has no matching credit, raise a complaint through the UPI app or contact the participating bank. NPCI says reversals are provided for declined transactions and advises contacting the bank if an expected reversal is delayed.
  • Use the bank or app’s current grievance process. NPCI’s FAQ includes timing guidance, but handling can vary; do not assume a universal resolution time.

How can you use UPI safely?

  • Verify the payee name and amount before approving a payment.
  • Keep your UPI PIN secret. NPCI says bank customer support will not ask you for it.
  • Treat any PIN prompt as authorization for a transaction. Do not enter a PIN to receive money or in response to a request from a caller, merchant, or supposed support agent.
  • If your phone or SIM is lost, contact your mobile provider to block the number and notify your bank and app provider promptly. Changing a device or app may require re-registration.

Can you use UPI outside India?

UPI is not accepted everywhere. NPCI describes UPI Global Acceptance for QR payments at select international merchant locations, using Indian bank accounts through enabled apps. Availability depends on the country, merchant, bank, and app. Before authorizing a payment, check the amount shown in both local currency and Indian rupees, along with any exchange rate and fees. See NPCI UPI Global Acceptance.

How large is UPI?

NPCI reported 24,508.96 million transactions, transaction value of ₹29,82,355.95 crore, and 752 live banks for August 2026 in its monthly UPI statistics. The table labels volume in millions and value in crore; it excludes same-account debit and credit transactions from August 2018 onward. These are figures for that month, not a current daily count.

How should you choose a UPI app?

There is no single app ranking established by these sources. Check whether your bank account is supported and whether the app’s functions suit you: QR payments, pay and collect, multiple linked accounts, transaction history, complaint handling, accessibility, and the support arrangements offered by the app and bank. Features and handles can differ, so confirm them with the provider before switching or linking an account.
