When you pay, your UPI-enabled app helps you address and approve the payment; participating payment service providers and banks handle their respective parts, while NPCI operates and coordinates the network. UPI is one payment component in the broader India Stack digital framework—not an app or another name for the entire framework.
What is UPI?
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) over the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) infrastructure. It lets people transfer money between bank accounts using a UPI-enabled app and supported payment address. NPCI says UPI payments are available 24/7. NPCI’s UPI overview and FAQ describe the service and its practical setup and payment options.
UPI supports person-to-person transfers as well as payments to merchants. A UPI ID or QR code can direct a payment without requiring the payer to enter all of the recipient’s bank-account details. Other supported addressing options include account number and IFSC; which options appear can depend on the app and bank.
How does a UPI payment work?
The exact screens and technical route vary by app and transaction type. In a typical transfer, the app lets the payer identify the recipient, review the details and amount, and approve the payment with a UPI PIN. The participating payment providers and banks process the transaction, and the network coordinates it with the receiving side.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- Start in a UPI-enabled app. The customer must register with a payment service provider (PSP) and link a bank account. NPCI says an account may not be fetched if the mobile number linked to the bank account does not match the number verified by the UPI app.
- Choose the recipient and payment route. Depending on the app and bank, this may be a UPI ID, QR code, mobile number, or account number and IFSC. Check that the displayed recipient is the intended one.
- Enter and review the amount. Confirm the amount and recipient details before authorizing the payment.
- Approve with the UPI PIN. The remitter bank authenticates the PIN and debits the payer’s account when the transaction is processed. Keep the PIN secret; do not share it with another person.
- The network coordinates the transfer. NPCI’s UPI network routes and coordinates the payment among the relevant participants. The beneficiary bank credits the recipient’s account, and the participants return a transaction status to the app.
This is a plain-language account of the participant roles, not a protocol specification. Payment modes and routes differ, so not every payment follows identical screens or technical steps. NPCI’s UPI FAQ covers supported addressing, registration, and common transaction problems.
Who processes UPI payments?
“The app,” “the bank,” and “UPI” are not interchangeable. The app is the customer-facing way to initiate a payment, but different participants have distinct responsibilities. NPCI’s UPI Product Booklet describes the roles below.

| Participant | What it does |
|---|---|
| NPCI | Owns, operates, provides services for, and coordinates the UPI network. |
| Payer PSP | Supports the payer’s onboarding into a UPI app, registration, and transaction approval. |
| Remitter bank | Holds the payer’s linked account, debits it for a transfer, and authenticates the UPI PIN. |
| Payee PSP | Supports onboarding for a recipient or merchant to receive money or raise a collect request. |
| Beneficiary bank | Receives the transfer and credits the recipient’s account. |
| Acquiring bank | Provides UPI infrastructure for a merchant and is involved in merchant onboarding. |
One institution may perform more than one role. The app provider does not necessarily hold the customer’s funds, and NPCI is not the payer’s bank.
How UPI works for merchant payments
UPI is used for more than transfers between individuals. Merchant payments may use QR codes, app-based flows, payment intents, or collect requests. Merchant-side infrastructure is provided through an acquiring bank; the exact interaction depends on the merchant’s setup and the payment mode. NPCI’s UPI FAQ describes merchant onboarding, payment modes, and transaction reversals.

Where does UPI fit in India Stack?
India Stack is a broader digital public infrastructure framework, not a single app and not a synonym for UPI. The Press Information Bureau describes it as a connected national framework built on open APIs and public digital goods. UPI is the payment system within that wider context. The Press Information Bureau’s India Stack explanation provides the broader framing.
What can go wrong, and what should you check?
Account setup or discovery
If the app cannot find a bank account to link, check that the mobile number verified in the app matches the number registered with the bank. Registration with a PSP and a linked account are needed before sending.

Incorrect PIN or declined payment
A wrong UPI PIN causes a payment to fail. NPCI says repeated incorrect entries may lead the bank to temporarily block outgoing UPI payments. For a declined transaction, NPCI describes real-time reversals; if the amount does not return, contact your bank. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ for troubleshooting guidance.
International UPI payments
Availability depends on the participating service and location. Before approving an international UPI payment, NPCI advises checking the recipient, the final amount in both currencies, and any applicable exchange rate or fee. Features, participating apps and banks, supported locations, limits, and fees can change. See NPCI’s UPI Global Acceptance information for guidance.
