For a playful note or puzzle, write the original message, choose a cipher and key, transform the letters consistently, then give the recipient what they need to reverse the steps. A Caesar shift is easiest to start with; a symbol alphabet such as Pigpen looks more mysterious. Neither is suitable for protecting genuinely sensitive information: classical hand ciphers are educational puzzles, not modern security.

Codes, ciphers, and secret writing: what is the difference?

These terms describe different ways to handle a message:

  • Plaintext is the original readable message. Ciphertext is the transformed message.
  • A code replaces whole words, phrases, people, or ideas with other words, numbers, or symbols. For example, a group might agree that “Bluebird” means “Meet at home.” Codes commonly need a codebook.
  • A cipher follows a repeatable rule to transform letters or their order, usually controlled by a key. A shift number or keyword can be a key.
  • Encryption (or enciphering) changes plaintext into ciphertext; decryption (or deciphering) reverses the process. Cryptanalysis is the attempt to recover a message or key without authorization.
  • Encoding changes how information is represented; it does not inherently conceal it. Morse code, Braille, and binary are representation systems, not secret encryption by themselves.
  • Steganography hides the existence of a message, rather than simply making its contents unreadable.

A cipher does not necessarily make text look random. Letter repetitions, word lengths, and language patterns may remain. For accessible explanations of cryptography and the distinction between codes and ciphers, see Khan Academy’s cryptography lessons and the NSA’s Codes and Ciphers.

Plaintext + method + key → ciphertext; ciphertext + method + key → plaintext. Before writing, agree on the alphabet and how to handle spaces, punctuation, numbers, and accents. The examples below use English A–Z, with A=0 only where specified.

The easiest cipher to write: Caesar shift

A Caesar cipher replaces each letter with one a fixed number of places later in the alphabet. The alphabet wraps around: with a shift of 3, X becomes A, Y becomes B, and Z becomes C.

Encrypt a message

  1. Choose a shift from 1 to 25 and share it with the recipient.
  2. Write the two alphabets, lining up each plaintext letter with the letter three places after it for a shift of 3:
    Plain: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
    Cipher: DEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZABC
  3. Replace each message letter using the aligned rows. For COME AT SIX, the result is FRPH DW VLA.
  4. Decide whether to keep spaces and punctuation. Keeping spaces is easier to read but exposes word lengths; removing them makes the text harder to scan and easier to mistype.

Decrypt and check it

Shift each ciphertext letter backward by the same number. For example, to undo the shift-3 FRPH DW VLA, F returns to C, R to O, and so on, recovering COME AT SIX. An earlier example, MEET AT NOON, becomes PHHW DW QRRQ with a shift of 3. Uppercase letters can reduce handwriting confusion; grouping ciphertext into blocks of five can help copy it accurately.

A shift is easy to learn, but there are only 26 possible alignments, including the unchanged alphabet. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada notes that all shifts can be tried quickly with modern computing; simple letter-frequency patterns also remain visible. See its discussion of Caesar ciphers and cryptography.

A becomes Z, B becomes Y, and C becomes X. Thus HELLO becomes SVOOL. The rule is fixed, so Atbash is a handy introductory exercise or visual puzzle, not a private cipher.

Pigpen: substitute symbols for letters

Pigpen assigns letters to positions in a set of grid and X-shaped diagrams. Each position becomes a particular outline or angle; dots distinguish letters in a corresponding dotted set. To use it, agree on one complete Pigpen alphabet chart, write each letter as its assigned mark, and reverse the mapping to decode. The sender and recipient must use the same chart and draw dots and shapes clearly. A missing dot or reversed mark can make a handwritten symbol ambiguous. Pigpen can disguise a note from a casual glance, but anyone with the chart can read it.

Morse code: encode letters as dots and dashes

Morse represents letters and numbers with dot-and-dash sequences. It can be written, tapped, or signaled with light, which makes it useful for activities beyond ordinary handwriting. It is an encoding, not encryption: someone who knows Morse can translate the message without a secret key. A chart or agreed spacing between letters and words helps prevent decoding mistakes.

More involved handwritten ciphers

Keyed substitution: use a scrambled alphabet

A monoalphabetic substitution cipher replaces each plaintext letter with one fixed ciphertext letter according to a scrambled alphabet. To build one from the keyword SECRET, first remove repeated letters, leaving SECRT. Then append each unused letter of A–Z in order. This produces:

Plain: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Cipher: SECRTABDFGHIJKLMNOPQUVWXYZ

Check that the cipher row contains all 26 letters exactly once. To encrypt, find a plaintext letter in the top row and write the letter beneath it; to decrypt, look in the bottom row and take the letter above. Keep the table for the recipient, and agree whether I and J are separate and how to treat punctuation, spaces, and numbers. The same plaintext letter always maps to the same ciphertext letter, so repeated patterns remain. Frequency analysis can help crack longer messages; see the Kennesaw State University cryptography exercises and the Canadian privacy commissioner’s explanation of classical-cipher weaknesses.

Rail fence: rearrange rather than replace letters

A transposition cipher keeps the original letters but changes their positions. In a two-rail fence, write alternate letters on two rows, then read each row across. For MEETMEATNOON:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

M E M A N O
E T E T O N

Read the top row, then the bottom row: MEMANOETETON. To decode, the recipient needs the same number of rails and must reconstruct the zigzag before reading diagonally. Extra, missing, or misplaced letters can disrupt the result, so test the convention with a short phrase first.

Columnar transposition: read columns in keyed order

  1. Choose a keyword and number its letters by alphabetical order. If letters repeat, agree how ties are resolved.
  2. Write the plaintext in rows beneath the keyword, moving left to right.
  3. If the final row is incomplete, agree whether to leave blank cells or add a padding character.
  4. Read the columns in the numbered order to create the ciphertext.
  5. To decode, use the same keyword, tie rule, and padding convention to restore the columns and read across the rows.

Numbering ciphertext groups in fives and recording the message length can help catch copying errors, but neither makes the method secure.

Vigenère: use a repeating keyword for changing shifts

Vigenère is a polyalphabetic substitution cipher: a repeating keyword selects a different Caesar shift at each position. For a hand calculation, remove spaces and punctuation from the message, repeat the keyword to the same length, and map letters to values A=0 through Z=25. Add the plaintext and key values, wrapping past 25 back to 0.

Key: LEMONLEMONLE
Ciphertext:LXFOPVEFRNHR

For decoding, subtract each key value from its ciphertext value, wrapping below 0 back to 25. Both people must agree whether spaces count toward the key and whether the key restarts after any breaks. Vigenère changes the substitution from position to position, but repeating a short key creates patterns that can be analyzed. It is a historical teaching cipher, not protection for confidential messages. The Library of Congress teaching article on historic codes and ciphers discusses Vigenère and computational thinking: read it here.

Hide a message with steganography

Instead of scrambling a message, steganography tries to make people overlook that a message exists. For a harmless paper puzzle, take the first letter of each sentence, use the second word of every line, or hide a phrase in an otherwise plausible shopping list. The recipient needs the extraction rule, such as “read the first letters.” If the carrier text looks unnatural, it may attract attention. You can encrypt text first and then hide the ciphertext, but adding layers can also create errors and does not automatically make a system secure. The U.S. Naval Academy lecture materials explain the distinction between encryption and hiding a message.

  • Alphabet: Are you using A–Z? Are I and J distinct? English A–Z examples need adaptation for other scripts, accented letters, emojis, and mixed-language text.
  • Character handling: Do spaces and punctuation stay as written, disappear, or count as key positions? Are numbers written as words or handled separately?
  • Key: Share the shift, keyword, codebook, or symbol chart through a suitable channel. The recipient must know the method and key to decode.
  • Padding and length: For a grid method, decide what happens in an incomplete final row. A message length or agreed padding mark can help detect omissions.
  • Copying: Write clearly, use uppercase if it helps, and group long ciphertext into blocks of five when the method allows it. Do not casually edit ciphertext after encoding.
  • Test and backup: Encode a short test phrase and have the recipient decode it. Keep the plaintext separately until you have checked the recovered message.
  • Key separation: For a game, sharing the key alongside the message may be fine. For a puzzle, putting it in an obvious place gives away the solution. For sensitive material, assume an improvised cipher may be discovered.

A reliable workflow is to choose the purpose and method, settle the alphabet and formatting rules, agree on the key, encode a test, then encode and independently decode the actual message. For English examples using A–Z, do not assume a rule such as A=0, A=1, or key resets at spaces unless both people have agreed on it.

Are hand ciphers secure enough for private messages?

No classical method in this guide should be used to protect genuinely sensitive communication. A Caesar cipher can be exhaustively tried; monoalphabetic substitution leaks repeated-letter patterns; transposition preserves the original letters; and a repeating Vigenère keyword has analyzable patterns. Short messages may offer less text for frequency analysis, but common guesses can still reveal them. Longer messages tend to expose more language structure. Combining weak methods may make a puzzle less obvious to a casual reader, but added complexity is not the same as modern security.

A one-time pad is a special theoretical case, not simply a longer Vigenère key: its key must be truly random, at least as long as the message, secret, and never reused. Meeting and maintaining those conditions is difficult. The Canadian privacy commissioner discusses these conditions alongside classical ciphers at its cryptography explainer. For real privacy, use trustworthy, reviewed modern security software and handle keys appropriately rather than inventing a handwritten cipher.

Which method should you choose?

Method Best for Main advantage Main weakness Difficulty
Caesar shift First lesson or quick note Very easy by hand Only 26 possible alignments Very low
Atbash Short visual puzzle No table needed Fixed rule is easy to recognize Very low
Pigpen Secret-looking handwriting Distinctive symbols Chart reveals the mapping; symbols can be miscopied Low
Morse Sound, light, or tapping activities Works beyond ordinary writing Encoding, not secrecy Low
Keyed substitution Longer classroom puzzle More varied than a single shift Frequency patterns remain Medium
Rail fence Demonstrating rearrangement Shows transposition clearly Easy to analyze; copying errors propagate Low
Columnar transposition Keyed rearrangement puzzle Keyword controls the column order More difficult to hand-check Medium
Vigenère Advanced classroom exercise Changing shifts obscure simple patterns Repeated keys remain vulnerable Medium
One-time pad Theory discussion Perfect secrecy under strict conditions Key generation, distribution, secrecy, and non-reuse are demanding High
Modern authenticated encryption Actual confidentiality Designed for contemporary threats Requires trustworthy software and key management Not a hand-writing method

For a child’s note, start with Caesar or Pigpen. For a lesson, compare substitution with transposition and show how each is decoded. For a puzzle, choose a method that fits the clues and gives solvers a fair way to learn the key. The Khan Academy cryptography lessons offer further educational explanations.
