Write noon or midnight in invitations and ordinary prose—not 12 a.m. or 12 p.m. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) warns that both numeric labels are ambiguous. When midnight’s date matters, state the date and make clear whether you mean the start or end of that date.
Why 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. cause confusion
A.m. means before noon, and p.m. means after noon, so noon itself does not neatly fit either label. Midnight is also easy to misread: it can be understood as twelve hours before noon or twelve hours after it. NIST’s Time and Frequency Division states in its FAQ, created September 16, 2024, and updated October 11, 2024: “This is a tricky question because 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. are ambiguous and should not be used.”
Style authorities make similar recommendations for prose. The Microsoft Style Guide advises using “noon” and “midnight,” not “12:00 noon” or “12:00 midnight.” The Australian Government Style Manual recommends “noon,” “midday” or “midnight” instead of “12 am” or “12 pm.”
Choose the clearest wording for the situation

Make midnight’s date explicit
“Midnight on Friday” can mean the instant Friday begins or the instant Friday ends. If that distinction affects whether someone arrives on time or meets a deadline, do not rely on the word alone.

For an invitation or public notice
Use “midnight” when the surrounding date is unmistakable. If readers could reasonably interpret it either way, say “midnight at the start of Friday” or “midnight at the end of Friday,” or give a more explicit time and date. For example, if a Friday deadline means the last minute of Friday, “11:59 p.m. Friday” is clearer than “Friday at midnight.”
For schedules that need a precise boundary
NIST describes using 0000 for the beginning of a date and 2400 for the end of that date in a 24-hour convention. The European Commission English Style Guide likewise distinguishes 00:00 as the beginning of a given date from 24:00 as its end, within that guide’s preferred 24-hour system. If you use this notation, state the date and document the convention your organization follows; readers should not have to guess what 00:00 or 24:00 means in your schedule.

Keep ordinary time formatting consistent
For times other than noon and midnight, follow one style throughout the invitation or schedule. AP Stylebook guidance uses figures for most times except noon and midnight, separates hours from minutes with a colon, and prefers a.m./p.m. listings in its context. That is AP style, not a universal rule: an organization, publication or jurisdiction may prescribe another format. Choose its house style and apply it consistently.

- Invitation: “Join us Saturday at noon.”
- Business hours: “Saturday, 8 a.m. to midnight.” NIST uses this form in an example.
- Start-of-Friday deadline: “Due Friday at 12:01 a.m.” if that is the intended minute, or use a clearly defined 24-hour date and time.
- End-of-Friday deadline: “Due by 11:59 p.m. Friday” if that is the intended last minute; avoid “Friday at midnight.”
A quick editing check
- Replace “12 a.m.” or “12 p.m.” used for noon or midnight with the word “noon” or “midnight.”
- Check whether “midnight” could mean either the beginning or the end of the named date.
- If the boundary matters, write the date and specify the intended side of it, or use a clearly explained time convention.
- Check that the rest of the times follow the same house style.
