A strong one-page startup pitch is a screening document, not a miniature slide deck. In one read, a stranger should understand who you serve, the painful problem, your solution, evidence that it works, the market, how you make money, why your team can execute, what you are asking for and what milestone comes next.
Use this core sentence to open: [Company] helps [specific customer] achieve [specific outcome] by [distinct mechanism]. Then support it with dated evidence and a precise next step. Investors usually look for a credible path to scale and returns; incubators also weigh learning velocity, coachability, team fit and milestone clarity.
What a one-page pitch is supposed to do
The purpose of a short pitch is to earn a second conversation. Y Combinator explains that a short pitch in a group setting rarely produces an investment immediately; its purpose is to gauge interest and secure a follow-up meeting. Treat the page as a first-pass investment thesis: complete enough to stand alone, specific enough to test, and concise enough for a busy reviewer to scan.
A one-page pitch is different from a pitch deck. A deck can devote a slide to each idea, show product screens, explain a financial model and answer objections over several minutes. The one-page version must establish the logic of the business in a few sections and point to the evidence a reviewer should verify next. It is not a data room, a product brochure or a list of ambitions.

“Lean startup business plans can take as little as an hour to write and are typically only one page.” — U.S. Small Business Administration, 2023
There is no universal investor-mandated word count, conversion rate or page-design rule. Use the recipient’s submission limits when they exist. If no limit is supplied, aim for one readable page with clear headings, short paragraphs and enough white space that the important numbers can be found in seconds.
Choose the reader and the decision you want
Write for one decision-maker at a time. An investor is deciding whether the opportunity can become a valuable, scalable company and whether a meeting is worth the time. An incubator reviewer is deciding whether the team and idea fit its program and whether the founders will learn quickly and use the program well. Both audiences need the same core facts, but the emphasis changes.
| Pitch element | Investor emphasis | Incubator emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Problem and customer | Large, urgent pain with a reachable buyer | Clear user need and a focused first experiment |
| Market | Defensible bottom-up size and a path to scale | Specific beachhead and evidence that the segment can be reached |
| Traction | Revenue quality, growth, retention and repeatability | Learning velocity, pilots, interviews and validated assumptions |
| Competition | Reason the company can win and defend its position | Awareness of alternatives and willingness to adapt |
| Team | Relevant execution record and an advantage others cannot easily copy | Coachability, complementary skills and commitment to the program |
| Ask | Capital, instrument, use of funds and a value-creating milestone | Program fit, resources needed and a concrete milestone during or after the program |
Do not send one generic page to every audience. Keep the facts consistent, then change the order, proof and requested next step to match the reviewer’s decision.
Build the page section by section
1. Company purpose: one sentence that earns attention
Start with the customer and outcome, not the technology or a broad mission. A useful formula is: Company helps specific customer achieve measurable outcome by distinct mechanism. “We use artificial intelligence to transform work” gives a reviewer no way to judge the business. “We help independent dental practices fill last-minute appointment cancellations through automated, two-way text booking” identifies a buyer, a result and a mechanism.
Use ordinary language and name the initial customer rather than an entire industry. If the outcome is measurable, include the unit: hours saved per week, reduction in processing time, additional appointments or improved retention. Avoid adjectives such as “huge,” “revolutionary” and “best.” A dated result with a denominator is more persuasive.
2. Problem: describe the pain and the failed alternative
Explain who experiences the problem, how often it occurs and what it costs in money, time, risk or lost opportunity. Distinguish the user from the economic buyer when they are different. A finance manager may pay for software used by an operations team; both roles belong in the description.

State the current workaround and its weakness. Customers may use spreadsheets, email, manual labor, a general-purpose tool or simply tolerate the problem. “There are no competitors” is almost never credible; the real competitor may be inaction. Include a short customer quote only when you have permission and can identify its context. Otherwise, describe the observed behavior and the date or sample behind it.
3. Solution and why now: explain the insight, not every feature
Describe the smallest product that solves the stated problem. Show the input, the key action and the customer-visible result. Keep feature lists out of the opening page unless a feature is the reason the product works. A reviewer should be able to repeat your explanation after one read.
Then answer “Why now?” A timing trigger might be a regulation, a new platform capability, a cost change, a shift in buyer behavior or data that recently became available. Connect the trigger to your advantage; do not merely mention a trend. If the timing is a hypothesis, label it as one and state how you will test it.
4. Customer and market: make the first segment tangible
Name the initial segment, the buyer, the user and the acquisition channel. “Small businesses” is too broad; “U.S. independent dental practices with three to 20 chairs, reached through dental-service consultants” gives a reviewer a testable starting point.
Use a bottom-up estimate. State the assumptions and calculation behind total addressable market (TAM), serviceable available market (SAM) and serviceable obtainable market (SOM). For example:
- TAM: the total number of potential customers multiplied by an evidence-based annual price if every eligible customer could buy.
- SAM: the portion matching your geography, product capabilities and target segment during the relevant period.
- SOM: the customers you can realistically reach and serve over a stated period, based on channel capacity, sales cycles and competitive conditions.
Label each figure as an assumption, an observed count or a forecast. Name the source or calculation in a footnote or parenthetical note on the page. A broad industry report can provide context, but it should not replace a count of reachable buyers and a price you can defend. The GOV.UK investor template published on 2 December 2025 specifically calls for defensible TAM, SAM and SOM assumptions.
5. Traction and validation: show dated proof
Use evidence that a reviewer can audit. Depending on stage, that may include paying customers, recurring revenue, growth, retention, completed pilots, conversion from a defined funnel, a waitlist with a qualification rule, signed partnerships or experiment results. Put the date and denominator next to every number: “18 of 42 invited practices paid for a three-month pilot between March and May 2026” is more informative than “strong demand.”

Separate observations from forecasts. A forecast belongs in a clearly labeled projection and should show the assumptions that drive it. Do not present an untested pipeline as revenue. If you are pre-revenue, report what you have learned: the number and type of interviews, the behavior tested, the result and the change you made. A failed experiment can demonstrate disciplined learning when you explain the decision it produced.
| Stage | Useful evidence | What to explain |
|---|---|---|
| Idea or prototype | Problem interviews, prototype tests, waitlist or pre-commitments | Who participated, what behavior was tested and what changed |
| Pilot | Signed pilots, activation, usage and conversion to paid service | Definition of activation, pilot period and conversion denominator |
| Early revenue | Paying customers, recurring revenue, growth and retention | Revenue type, cohort period, churn or retention method |
| Scaling | Repeatable acquisition, expansion, gross-margin direction and channel performance | Acquisition economics, sales cycle and evidence that results are repeatable |
6. Competition and advantage: explain how you can win
List direct competitors, indirect alternatives and the customer’s current workaround. Then name the narrow reason you win for the initial segment: faster implementation, a lower total cost, a workflow others cannot support, proprietary distribution, unique data rights, a regulatory capability or an unusually strong founder advantage. Do not claim a permanent moat before you have evidence.
Describe what is difficult to copy and how it compounds. A feature is easy to copy; a dense network, accumulated data with permission, trusted distribution or a repeatable operational process may become stronger over time. If your advantage is still a hypothesis, say what milestone will validate it.
7. Business model and economics: connect payment to value
State who pays, what they pay for and how the price is set. Identify whether revenue is subscription, usage-based, transaction, services, licensing or a combination. Explain the buying event and the channel that delivers it.
Include the economic signals you actually know: gross-margin direction, acquisition cost, payback period, retention, expansion or contribution margin. Early-stage companies may not have stable estimates; show the measurement plan instead of inventing precision. Keep cost structure concise, naming the major variable costs and the spending that scales with customers. The U.S. SBA’s lean-plan guidance includes channels, cost structure and potential revenue streams because a compelling product still needs a credible route to cash flow.

8. Team: give evidence tied to this problem
Use one line per founder or key operator. Connect each person’s domain knowledge, prior execution or uniquely earned insight to the problem in the first section. “Former product lead” is less useful than “Led compliance automation for 60 regional banks and built the workflow now used in this product.” Include a missing capability only when it affects the next milestone and explain how you will cover it.
For incubators, show how the team works, what it has learned and why coaching will accelerate execution. For investors, emphasize evidence that the team can recruit, ship, sell and make decisions under uncertainty. Keep biographies out of the page; link or attach a full résumé only if the recipient asks.

9. Ask, use of funds and milestone: make the request testable
State the amount or resource requested, the instrument if relevant and the next 12–18-month milestone. Tie the request to two or three priorities, such as completing a product release, reaching a defined number of retained customers or proving a repeatable acquisition channel. Explain how the spend maps to the milestone rather than listing a general budget.
Do not include a number you cannot defend. If you are applying to an incubator for space, mentorship or a grant rather than investment, specify the resource and the outcome you will produce. A good ask lets the recipient decide what happens next: a meeting, pilot, interview, referral or application review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems10. Vision and next step: end with a concrete future
Describe the five-year outcome if the plan works, without turning it into a slogan. The vision should follow logically from the beachhead: the adjacent customers, products or geographies you can reach after proving the initial case.
Finish with one action and a reason to take it now. Examples include reviewing a pilot plan, introducing you to a named buyer role, scheduling a 20-minute meeting or advancing an incubator application. Do not add a second ask that competes with the first.
How to write defensible market numbers
Market sizing is often where otherwise clear pages lose credibility. Start with a customer count, not a famous industry headline. If 12,000 eligible businesses exist and the annual contract is 1,200 units of currency, the implied TAM is 14.4 million units of currency. That is a calculation, not proof that every business will buy. Explain the source of the 12,000 count, the pricing basis and the exclusions.
For SAM, remove customers outside your supported geography, regulation, integration or price range. For SOM, model the capacity of your sales and delivery channels over a specified period. A two-person sales team with a six-month sales cycle cannot plausibly serve half the SAM in year one. State the assumptions that limit the estimate, and show a sensitivity case if a single assumption drives the result.

How to handle pre-revenue traction
Pre-revenue does not mean proof-free. Choose a validation signal that represents a costly customer action: a scheduled workflow test, a data-sharing agreement, a signed pilot, a deposit, a repeat usage event or a referral. Report the sample and date, then state the conclusion you are willing to draw. “Eight of 12 operations managers completed a second workflow test in April 2026” supports a different conclusion from “12 managers said they liked the idea.”
Show the next experiment alongside the current result. This makes the milestone credible and gives an incubator a clear way to assess learning velocity. Avoid vanity measures such as unqualified social followers or a waitlist with no verification rule.
Tailor the same facts for an investor or an incubator
Prepare one factual source document, then create audience-specific versions. The investor version should bring market scale, competitive advantage, revenue quality and the return path forward. The incubator version should bring the founder’s insight, the experiment roadmap, coachability and fit with the program’s network or facilities.

A practical writing and editing workflow
- Collect evidence. Put customer counts, dates, prices, experiment results, retention definitions and market assumptions in a single working sheet.
- Write the opening sentence. Remove every word that does not identify the customer, outcome or mechanism.
- Draft each section in plain language. Give every paragraph one job and put the strongest proof next to the claim it supports.
- Calculate TAM, SAM and SOM. Show the inputs, source or calculation and period; label forecasts as forecasts.
- Choose the ask and milestone. Work backward from the milestone to the resources required, then remove spending unrelated to it.
- Run a skeptical-reader test. Ask someone unfamiliar with the category to state the customer, pain, solution, proof, market, business model, team and ask after one read.
- Cut and format. Replace adjectives with numbers, remove repeated claims and preserve white space. Put definitions in short notes rather than dense paragraphs.
- Verify submission details. Check page count, file type, naming convention, confidentiality rules and the recipient’s current rubric before sending.
Formatting that improves a one-page scan
- Use descriptive headings that match the reviewer’s questions: Problem, Solution and why now, Market, Traction, Competition, Business model, Team, Ask and Vision.
- Keep one main idea per section and use bullets for metrics, assumptions and milestones.
- Make dates, denominators and units visible beside each number.
- Use a simple hierarchy and sufficient contrast; decorative graphics should never compete with the evidence.
- Include contact details and the requested next step, but do not spend half the page on a logo or mission statement.
- Export to the file type the recipient requests and inspect the final file on a laptop and a phone to catch clipped tables or unreadable footnotes.
A one-page pitch is a screening document, so readability is part of the argument. If a reviewer must decode jargon, hunt for the date behind a metric or infer who pays, the page has failed its first job.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Starting with the technology: Move the customer and measurable outcome into the first sentence.
- Using a giant market number: Replace it with a bottom-up count, price and calculation, then separate TAM, SAM and SOM.
- Calling a forecast traction: Put projected figures in a forecast line and show the observed evidence separately.
- Claiming no competition: Name direct, indirect and do-nothing alternatives, then explain the focused reason to win.
- Listing features without a mechanism: Explain how the product changes the customer’s workflow and result.
- Writing a biography: Keep only team evidence that predicts execution of this plan.
- Making an unsupported funding request: Tie the amount and resource to two or three priorities and a 12–18-month milestone.
- Sending the same page everywhere: Preserve the facts but change emphasis for investor or incubator criteria.
- Overloading the page: Move detailed financial statements, technical architecture and long customer lists to attachments or a data room when requested.
Copy-and-fill one-page skeleton
[Company] helps [specific customer] achieve [measurable outcome] through [distinct mechanism].
Problem: [pain, frequency, current workaround and cost].
Solution and why now: [how it works, unique insight and timing trigger].
Customer and market: [initial segment, buyer and channel]. TAM [assumption]; SAM [assumption]; SOM [assumption].
Traction: [dated metric, customer proof, pilot or experiment, with denominator].
Competition and advantage: [direct and indirect alternatives] and [focused reason to win].
Business model: [payer, pricing, channel and known or planned economic signal].
Team: [founder or operator evidence tied to this problem].
Ask and milestone: [amount or resource], used for [two or three priorities], reaching [dated 12–18-month milestone].
Vision and next step: [five-year outcome] — requesting [meeting, pilot, interview or application step].
Use the skeleton as a starting point, not a substitute for evidence. Replace every bracketed instruction with a specific fact, assumption or clearly labeled forecast, and delete any line that does not apply to your stage or the recipient’s form.
Final pre-send checklist
- Can a stranger identify the initial customer and outcome from the first sentence?
- Is the problem frequent, costly or urgent enough to justify a change?
- Does the solution explain a mechanism and a reason the timing matters?
- Are TAM, SAM and SOM calculated from visible assumptions?
- Does every traction number have a date, denominator and definition?
- Have you named real alternatives and explained a credible advantage?
- Is the payer, price logic, channel and economic signal clear?
- Does each team line show relevant execution or insight?
- Are the ask, use of funds and next 12–18-month milestone connected?
- Is the final request a single, concrete next step?
- Does the page follow the recipient’s current submission and program rules?
When those questions can be answered without explanation from the founder, the page is doing its job: making the first conversation easy to say yes to.
