Do not wear a Fallout Power Fist replica through airport screening or assume an airline will permit it in the cabin. Treat the gauntlet as a potentially hazardous, weapon-like prop: make it lightweight and blunt, secure it so it cannot swing or snag, keep it visibly non-functional, carry it covered between locations, and follow each venue’s inspection and tagging decision.
Why a fictional Power Fist still needs real-world precautions
A Power Fist is fictional, but airport screeners, convention security staff, transit employees, and bystanders judge what an object looks capable of doing. A large gauntlet with claws, spikes, hard plating, exposed mechanisms, or a convincing industrial appearance can be treated as weapon-like even when it is clearly costume equipment to its owner. The name “Power Fist” does not create an exemption.
Three hazards matter in practice:
- Impact: a heavy or rigid fist can injure someone if it swings, catches on a doorway, or is used accidentally in a pose.
- Snagging and loss of control: straps, claws, cables, and protrusions can catch on people, escalators, seats, door handles, or vehicle controls.
- Misinterpretation: a realistic-looking prop can trigger a security response before anyone has time to hear the cosplay explanation.
The safe standard is not merely “it is a replica.” It is a prop that cannot function as a weapon, stays under your control, and is accepted by the specific venue or carrier.

Use a load-bearing attachment
Support the weight with a harness, forearm brace, or straps that keep the replica close to your body. Do not rely on a single loose wrist strap. The attachment should prevent the fist from swinging independently when you walk, turn, or take a photograph.

Test the complete costume at home, including clothing worn underneath. Check that straps do not cut into your arm, restrict circulation, pinch skin, or pull your shoulder out of alignment. Walk through narrow doorways, sit down, reach for a bag, and turn around. If the prop causes numbness, pain, instability, or loss of control, stop using it until the fit is corrected.
Remove weapon-like functions
A Power Fist should be a costume object, never a striking device. Remove or disable any functional mechanism, projectile launcher, sharp metal component, compressed-gas part, or feature that could injure someone. Keep batteries, lights, sound modules, and other removable electronics separate during transport; a loose battery or activated motor can create a different safety problem even when the shell is harmless.
Blunt every contact point
Round, cover, or pad spikes, claws, corners, and exposed edges. Foam or another soft covering should remain attached during ordinary movement and posing. Do not leave heavy bolts, pointed fasteners, broken plastic, or thin metal edges exposed where they could press into another person.
Padding also protects the wearer. Cover the inside of the gauntlet at the wrist, palm, and forearm so hard surfaces do not create pressure points during a long event. Recheck padding after repairs; a material that was soft when installed can compress or split.
Keep a quick-release path
Your fingers and joints must remain free enough to release the replica quickly. Avoid closures that require tools, a second person, or a complicated sequence to remove. Practice taking it off while standing still and while seated. A safe design lets you surrender the prop immediately if staff ask, if a child approaches, or if a strap fails.

Rules for wearing it at a convention
Convention policies vary from lightweight foam allowances to outright bans on hard props. A fictional setting does not override the policy of the convention, building, hotel, or city.
Read every applicable policy
Before traveling, read the current rules for the convention, its host venue, your hotel, and any local transit service you plan to use. Look for provisions covering hard materials, realistic weapons, peace-bonding, inspection, projectile devices, and conduct. A convention may permit a prop inside the exhibit hall but prohibit it in a hotel, on a shuttle, or at an evening event.

If the wording does not clearly cover a wearable Power Fist, email the cosplay or security desk. Send photographs from several angles, the approximate dimensions, the materials, and a description of how it attaches to your body. Keep the written response with your travel information, but follow staff instructions at the entrance if they differ.
What E3’s policy illustrates
E3’s weapons policy forbids “Hard prop weapons (including props made of metal, fiberglass and glass).” It allows prop weapons made of “cardboard, foam, wood or other light materials,” subject to review. The same policy says prop firearms must not be mistaken for real weapons, all items resembling weapons are reviewed, and unsafe items may be confiscated.
A Power Fist built from rigid metal or fiberglass therefore presents a different entry question from a lightweight foam version. Even a soft replica remains subject to inspection and a staff decision; material alone does not guarantee admission.

What Windycon’s policy illustrates
Windycon states: “No prop shall be used in a dangerous or threatening manner. Do not draw blades. Do not point projectile weapons. Anything used as a weapon will be treated as a weapon.” It also bars realistic gun props, requires other firearm props to go to Operations for peace-bonding, and places responsibility for damage on the attendee.

Those rules show why posing matters. Keep the fist pointed down or in a neutral position, do not make striking motions, and do not use it to block a walkway or touch another attendee. Ask before bringing it close to someone for a photograph, especially a child or a crowded photo line.
Inspection, tagging, and refusal
Bring the replica to the entrance covered in an opaque bag or case. Uncover it only where staff direct you. Be prepared for inspection, a peace-bond, a storage requirement, or refusal. Staff may tag, confiscate, or reject a prop they consider unsafe. Accept the decision without arguing; the venue’s instructions and local law control at the destination.
How to move between home, hotel, vehicle, and the event
- Secure the attachment. Confirm that every buckle, strap, fastener, and padded section is closed and cannot loosen during walking.
- Cover the replica. Use an opaque bag or case so passersby do not see a weapon-like object. Keep the cover on in lobbies, parking areas, elevators, sidewalks, and shuttles.
- Carry it, do not wear it, during transitions. Put it away before driving, climbing crowded stairs, boarding public transit, or entering a place where staff have not approved it.
- Keep it inaccessible to others. Do not leave an uncovered prop on a hotel bed, in a shared hallway, or in an unattended vehicle where someone could handle it or mistake it for a weapon.
- Open it only at the approved point. At the convention, go directly to the weapons-check or cosplay desk rather than walking through public areas with the replica exposed.
Do not open-carry the Power Fist on public streets. A cover reduces misunderstandings, but it does not remove the need to obey local law or a property owner’s rules.
Can you take a Power Fist through TSA?
Do not wear it to the checkpoint. Federal aviation rules in 49 CFR §1540.111 prohibit having a weapon on your person or in accessible property during screening, in a sterile area, or while boarding a screened aircraft. The rule’s language about a locked, hard-sided checked container is written for firearms; it is not blanket permission to bring any replica in that manner.

TSA’s interpretive rule says a realistic replica may be prohibited and that a screener can judge whether an item appears realistic or could readily be used as a weapon. A fictional name, a costume explanation, or a prior successful trip does not bind the current screener. A large mechanical-looking gauntlet can therefore receive scrutiny even when it has no working parts.
Keep the replica packed and inaccessible before you reach the airport. Never place it in a backpack that remains with you through screening, and never remove it in the security queue to explain it. If a screener asks to inspect it, follow the instructions and be prepared for the item to be rejected.
Airline and aircraft transport: a safer packing process
Airport security and airline dangerous-goods rules are separate systems. FAA PackSafe explains that an item not listed in its guidance is not automatically allowed in baggage, and that individual carriers and international authorities may impose stricter requirements. The airline’s current answer for your route controls your packing decision.
- Ask before departure. Contact the operating airline, not only a booking website, and describe the object accurately as a cosplay Power Fist replica. Ask whether it must be checked, declared, shipped separately, or is refused altogether. Ask again for each airline and international segment.
- Remove detachable parts. Take out batteries, lights, sound modules, compressed-gas parts, and detachable sharp or heavy pieces. Protect each removed item according to the carrier’s current instructions; do not leave loose batteries or energized mechanisms inside the prop.
- Immobilize the shell. Place the replica in a padded, rigid container that prevents activation, movement, and contact with the case wall. A hard-sided prop case with internal padding is appropriate for protection, but the case itself does not create legal permission to carry the item.
- Keep it inaccessible while traveling. Once packed, do not open the case in the terminal, aircraft cabin, or other controlled area unless airline or security staff direct you.
- Label only as permitted. If the carrier allows labeling, identify the container plainly as a cosplay prop. Do not attach labels that imply the contents are a real weapon or hazardous device.
- Allow extra time. A manual inspection can take longer, and a decision may be made at the checkpoint. Do not rely on a tight connection or on what happened on a previous trip.
If the airline cannot give a clear acceptance decision, the lowest-risk choice is to leave the replica at home or use a shipping method that has explicitly accepted the item. Do not conceal it or gamble on cabin access.
Choosing a case or bag
For local convention movement
Use an opaque, padded bag or case that closes fully and keeps the gauntlet from protruding. The carrier should support the weight without forcing you to hold the prop by a claw, barrel, or decorative mechanism. A shoulder strap or handles should leave one hand free for doors, tickets, and railings.

For checked air transport
Use a rigid, padded container sized so the replica cannot slide or strike the walls. Immobilize movable joints and protect every spike, claw, and edge. A soft costume bag alone does not prevent crushing or inspection damage. The case is for containment and protection; airline acceptance still must be confirmed in advance.
For rail, bus, rideshare, and hotel trips
Keep the replica covered and secured, and check the operator’s rules before boarding. In a rideshare, place the closed case where it cannot interfere with the driver or another passenger. At a hotel, ask where costume props may be stored and keep the case closed outside your room.
When a venue or carrier says no
Do not try a second entrance, hide the prop, or reframe it as a toy. Ask whether the property offers secure storage, whether the item may remain locked in your vehicle, or whether a non-wearable photo-only alternative is acceptable. If the answer is still no, leave with the covered case or surrender it under the venue’s documented process. Staff directions and local law take priority over a costume plan.

If a prop is tagged or peace-bonded, do not remove the tag or use the item outside the conditions staff gave you. If the venue accepts it only for photographs, return it to its case immediately afterward.
Before-you-leave safety checklist
- The replica is lightweight enough for the planned wearing time and does not cause pain, numbness, or restricted circulation.
- Straps and harnesses keep it close to your body and allow quick release.
- Claws, spikes, corners, and edges are rounded or padded.
- No projectile, sharp metal, compressed-gas, or other functional weapon component remains.
- Batteries, lights, and sound modules are removed or packed according to the carrier’s rules.
- You have checked the current convention, venue, hotel, transit, airline, and destination requirements.
- Photographs and dimensions have been sent to event security when the policy was unclear.
- The replica is inside an opaque carrier for every transition and will be uncovered only for inspection.
- You have a plan for storage or returning home if staff refuse it.
