There is no single story timeline for every Resident Evil movie. Watch the six Milla Jovovich films in release order as one continuous Alice story; watch the four CG-animated films in release order as a separate branch aligned with the game timeline. Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) and Resident Evil (2026) are separate live-action reboots, each with its own starting point.
That makes the simplest choice a question of what you want to follow: one long original film saga, animated stories set alongside the games, or a standalone reboot. The release list below covers all 12 films identified for this guide: eight live-action features and four CG-animated features.
What is the right order to watch the Resident Evil movies?
If you want to see every film by theatrical release, use the list below. It includes all four continuities, so it is a release-order watchlist, not one unified plot chronology. The two long-running branches—the Alice films and the CG films—each follow their own release order as their story order.
| Release order | Film | Continuity | Story placement or note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Resident Evil (2002) | Alice saga | Beginning of Alice’s story |
| 2 | Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) | Alice saga | Raccoon City outbreak |
| 3 | Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) | Alice saga | After Raccoon City |
| 4 | Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) | CG, game-timeline branch | Set in 2005 |
| 5 | Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) | Alice saga | Continues the Alice story |
| 6 | Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) | Alice saga | Continues the Alice story |
| 7 | Resident Evil: Damnation (2012) | CG, game-timeline branch | Set in 2011 |
| 8 | Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (commonly listed as 2016) | Alice saga | Conclusion of Alice’s story; recorded U.S. release was January 27, 2017 |
| 9 | Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017) | CG, game-timeline branch | Set in 2014 |
| 10 | Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) | Standalone reboot | Separate continuity based on the first two games |
| 11 | Resident Evil: Death Island (2023) | CG, game-timeline branch | Main events set in 2015 |
| 12 | Resident Evil (2026) | Standalone reboot | Separate story featuring new characters |
The table answers “what came out next?” rather than “what happened next in one shared universe?” For a story-first watch, choose a continuity below and stay within it. You can also watch the four CG entries as a compact, separate run; their in-universe dates are provided so you can see where they sit relative to one another.

Why does The Final Chapter have two years?
The Final Chapter is commonly listed as a 2016 film, while Box Office Mojo records a U.S. release date of January 27, 2017. These dates refer to different release listings, not two different movies or a continuity change. For following the Alice story, the exact market date does not affect the order: it comes after Retribution.
What is the story order for the six Alice movies?
The Alice saga’s story order is the same as its release order. Watch Resident Evil, Apocalypse, Extinction, Afterlife, Retribution, then The Final Chapter. These six live-action films tell one continuous story centered on Alice, a character created for the film series rather than a single game character whose game-timeline appearances connect the movies.
Resident Evil (2002)
Alice wakes with no memory and joins a commando team entering the Hive, an underground Umbrella facility. The T-virus has escaped, and the facility’s artificial intelligence, the Red Queen, has sealed the complex. This establishes the saga’s central setting and conflict: Alice and other survivors confronting Umbrella and the consequences of its biological experiments.

Apocalypse (2004)
The infection spreads into Raccoon City. Alice joins Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira, and other survivors as Umbrella quarantines the city and deploys Nemesis. The story carries forward the first film’s outbreak into a much larger crisis, rather than restarting Alice’s story.

Extinction (2007)
The setting shifts beyond Raccoon City to a devastated world. Alice and Claire Redfield cross the Mojave Desert while Umbrella continues experimenting with the virus. The change in scale marks a new stage of the same saga, not a new continuity.
Afterlife (2010)
Alice and Claire search for survivors and a safe haven, reaching Los Angeles and encountering Chris Redfield. The Umbrella conflict continues as the survivors look for somewhere to escape the outbreak’s reach.
Retribution (2012)
Alice is trapped in an underwater Umbrella testing facility built around simulated outbreak environments. She works with Ada Wong and a rescue team that includes Leon Kennedy. Its characters and game-related names do not make this film part of the separate CG branch; it remains part of Alice’s ongoing story.

What is the story order for the CG-animated movies?
The four CG films are presented as a separate branch aligned with the game timeline. Watch them in release order: Degeneration, Damnation, Vendetta, and Death Island. Their commonly presented story placements—2005, 2011, 2014, and 2015—also fall in that same order.
- Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008; set in 2005): Leon and Claire reunite during a T-virus outbreak at Harvardville Airport.
- Resident Evil: Damnation (2012; set in 2011): Leon investigates Bio-Organic Weapons in the fictional Eastern Slav Republic during a civil war.
- Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017; set in 2014): Chris, Leon, and Rebecca work to stop a bioweapons dealer threatening New York City.
- Resident Evil: Death Island (2023; main events in 2015): Leon, Chris, Jill, Claire, and Rebecca converge around a bioterror investigation tied to Alcatraz and Raccoon City’s legacy.
These animated films differ from the Alice saga in both format and continuity. They feature characters associated with the games and are the branch identified with the game timeline; watching them in place of an Alice film will not fill in that film’s plot. Their release years can be several years later than their story dates, so use the in-universe years only when you want a chronology within this animated branch.
Are Welcome to Raccoon City and the 2026 movie connected to the other films?
No. Each is a separate live-action reboot, and neither continues Alice’s story or the CG films’ game-timeline branch. They are independent entry points, so you can watch either without first seeing the earlier movie series.
Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
This reboot draws on the first two games and combines characters, places, and events from them in a new film continuity. Claire, Chris, Leon, and the S.T.A.R.S. team investigate Umbrella’s abandoned operations in Raccoon City. Sony’s film description frames the story around survivors uncovering the truth behind Umbrella and trying to make it through the night. Familiar names and locations are a connection to the games, not evidence that the movie continues the Alice films.

Resident Evil (2026)
The 2026 film is another standalone reboot, with an original story and new characters. Sony lists its theatrical release as September 18, 2026, and identifies Bryan, a medical courier, as the central survivor. Its year places it last in the release list above, but it is not the next chapter in a shared film chronology.
Which watch plan should a new viewer choose?
Choose a run based on the kind of connection you want. If you want a continuous live-action saga, watch the six Alice films together. If you want the animated branch aligned with the games, watch the four CG features together. If you want a self-contained start, choose either reboot without treating it as a prerequisite for the others.
- For the full film release history: follow the 12-film release list. Expect changes in continuity; it deliberately includes reboots and the separate CG branch.
- For one uninterrupted film story: watch the six Alice entries in order and stop after The Final Chapter.
- For animated, game-timeline stories: watch the four CG movies in their release order. Their in-universe years are 2005, 2011, 2014, and 2015.
- For a standalone live-action entry: start with either Welcome to Raccoon City or the 2026 Resident Evil. There is no earlier film you need to catch up on first.
These plans avoid a common watch-order trap: sorting every title by its plot year as if all the films shared a calendar. The CG films have stated story placements, but those dates do not slot them into the Alice saga or turn the reboots into sequels. A single date-sorted marathon would suggest connections the films do not have.

Do the television adaptations belong in the movie order?
No. This order is for films, not every screen adaptation of Resident Evil. Infinite Darkness and the 2022 live-action series are television entries, so they are outside the 12-film count and do not need to be inserted between movie releases.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play the Resident Evil games before watching the CG movies?
The film summaries do not establish a game-play prerequisite. The CG features follow characters and events in the game-timeline branch, but the stories are movies rather than game installments.
Is the 2026 Resident Evil movie a remake of the 2002 film?
No. It is described as a separate reboot with an original story and new characters, including Bryan, a medical courier. Its theatrical release is listed for September 18, 2026.
Are Infinite Darkness and the 2022 Resident Evil series movies?
No. They are television adaptations, so they are excluded from the 12-film count and from this movie watch order.
