You can watch Freely without a terrestrial aerial or satellite dish: connect a Freely-enabled TV, or a Freely streaming device plugged into your TV’s HDMI port, to the internet. Freely recommends a broadband connection of at least 10 Mbps for live and on-demand viewing.

What you need to watch Freely without an aerial

  • A Freely-enabled television, or an existing TV with an available HDMI port and a compatible Freely streaming device.
  • A working home internet connection. Freely works over Wi-Fi or Ethernet; its published recommendation is at least 10 Mbps.

Freely delivers its streamed live channels over broadband. An aerial is optional for this route, but broadband is not. Freely describes the connection this way: “Freely works with your Wi-Fi. No dishes, no need for an aerial.”

Freely-enabled TV Freely is built into the television. Check the exact model’s current Freely support before buying. Someone replacing a TV who wants fewer separate components.
Freely streaming device Connect a dedicated device to an existing TV’s HDMI port, then connect it to broadband. Freely names Netgem PLEIO and Manhattan Aero as examples in an article dated 19 February 2026. Someone who wants to keep an HDMI-equipped TV.

Freely’s 19 February 2026 article describes its devices as offering “70+ channels available to stream”; this is Freely’s channel-count figure, not an independent measurement, and channel availability can change. Prices and retailer stock are not established here, so check current product and retailer listings before purchasing. See Freely’s device information.

Set up Freely over Wi-Fi or Ethernet

  1. Check compatibility. Confirm that Freely is supported by your TV, or that your existing TV has a free HDMI port for a Freely streaming device. Freely’s device page explains the HDMI option.
  2. Connect the hardware. For a built-in Freely TV, use the television’s setup instructions. For a separate device, plug it into HDMI and follow that model’s instructions.
  3. Connect to broadband. If using Ethernet, Freely recommends connecting the cable before setup; the device should connect automatically. For Wi-Fi, select your network during startup and enter its password. Freely supports both options and recommends Ethernet if available.
  4. Complete the on-screen setup. Prompts can include language, location, postcode or region, internet connection and a channel scan. The sequence varies by TV or device.
  5. Open the Freely guide. Choose a live channel from the guide. For on-demand programmes, sign in to the relevant broadcaster app when asked.

Freely’s setup and connection help covers the connection and on-screen steps.

Do you need an aerial for anything else?

No aerial is required to watch Freely’s broadband-streamed channels. If your Freely TV supports an aerial input, you can connect one for additional aerial channels or as a reception backup; that is separate from the internet-delivered Freely service. Check the specific TV’s features and setup instructions, since support varies by model.

Fix buffering or a failed connection

  1. Check the connection speed and signal. Run a speed test and check Wi-Fi signal strength where the TV or device is located. Compare the result with Freely’s 10 Mbps recommendation.
  2. See whether other devices are offline too. If other apps or devices also lack internet access, investigate the router or contact your broadband provider.
  3. Check the TV or device connection. If the problem affects only Freely hardware, review its Wi-Fi or Ethernet settings and reconnect if needed.
  4. Update the device software. Install available software updates, then try Freely again.

Freely’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking speed and signal, isolating whether the issue affects other devices, and keeping software current.
