You can watch many 360-degree YouTube videos on an iPhone XR in the YouTube app and turn the phone to look around. That is phone-screen 360 viewing, not the same as immersive headset VR. YouTube Help says mobile browsers do not support VR180 or 360-degree playback and that Cardboard is not supported on iPhone or iPad, so do not expect a YouTube Cardboard mode to work with an iPhone XR.
Watch a 360-degree video in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app on your iPhone XR and find a video identified as 360-degree content.
- Play the video in the app. If motion-controlled viewing is available, rotate the phone to look around the scene.
- If you opened the video in Safari or another mobile browser and it does not behave as a 360 player, open it in the YouTube app instead. YouTube says VR180 and 360-degree playback is not supported in mobile browsers, including web views outside YouTube. YouTube Help explains how to watch VR videos.
For the app method, hold and turn the iPhone to explore the video. This does not put the screen into a split, stereoscopic headset view; it changes the view as you move the phone.
Phone-screen 360 viewing is different from headset VR
A phone-based viewer holds the iPhone close to your eyes, but that alone does not create an immersive VR image. The app must render the appropriate headset view, and the viewer must fit and work with the phone and that app.

There is an important compatibility distinction: Google’s general Cardboard setup guidance discusses using an iPhone with a viewer and advises checking viewer compatibility, while YouTube Help specifically says, “Cardboard is not supported for iPhone and iPad.” The general setup page does not establish that YouTube’s iOS app currently offers Cardboard mode on the XR. YouTube’s playback guidance and Google Cardboard setup guidance address different things.

Connecting the iPhone to a TV or monitor
iPhone XR supports video mirroring and video out up to 1080p through separately sold Lightning adapters. That sends video to an external display; it does not add 360-degree controls, stereoscopic rendering, or head tracking. Apple lists iPhone video-out support and adapter details.
