Use the sewn-in care label and the costume’s actual construction to choose the cleaning method. A Pokémon costume may combine polyester or nylon with sequins, glitter, glued trim, foam, vinyl, plastic, elastic, wiring, lights, or a battery pack. The fiber name alone does not make the finished costume machine washable. Remove every battery and removable electronic component before wet cleaning, use cool water and mild detergent when washing is allowed, avoid twisting and heat, and store the costume only after every layer is completely dry.
The safest method is often different for each part: a label-approved fabric shell may tolerate a cold delicate cycle, while a mask, foam mascot head, wired tail, or light-up panel may need separate surface cleaning and shape support.
Inspect the costume before getting it wet
Read and photograph the care label
Find the permanent care label and photograph it before washing. Follow its instructions for water temperature, cycle, detergent, bleach, drying, and professional cleaning. Treat the label as the controlling instruction even when the garment is advertised as polyester or nylon. Vinyl, polyurethane, sequins, glued decorations, and mixed-material construction can be damaged by water, agitation, or heat, and some finished garments are surface-wipe-only. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s clothing-care guidance specifically recognizes that these materials can limit washability.

Map the construction
Turn the costume inside out where practical and identify every part that could react differently to water or friction:
- Fabric panels, lining, elastic, and hook-and-loop fasteners.
- Sequins, rhinestones, glitter, printed details, appliqués, and glued trim.
- Foam padding, tulle, feathers, velvet, pleather, or bulky layered sections.
- Plastic, vinyl, EVA, or other rigid accessories and masks.
- Wires, light strips, switches, speakers, battery pockets, and connectors.
- Stuffed or structured pieces whose shape could collapse under spinning, squeezing, or storage pressure.
A costume with any of the delicate or rigid features above should not automatically go into an ordinary washer cycle, even if the main fabric is synthetic.
Remove anything that should not get wet
Empty pockets and detachable pouches. Remove batteries, battery packs, lights, control modules, and other removable electronics. Soak’s costume-care instructions likewise direct users to remove hardware and batteries before soaking. Detach rigid decorations or accessories when their instructions allow it, and keep each part with the costume so it can be reassembled after cleaning.

Choose the cleaning method by costume feature
| Costume feature | Safer default | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Label-approved polyester or nylon garment | Cold delicate cycle in a mesh laundry bag, or gentle hand washing | Hot water, high spin, and dryer heat |
| Sequins, rhinestones, glitter, tulle, or feathers | Hand wash or spot clean exactly as the label permits | Aggressive agitation and ordinary machine cycles |
| Foam, wires, rigid inserts, or bulky structure | Spot clean or hand clean, then dry flat while supporting the shape | Twisting, crushing, high-speed spinning, and dryer heat |
| Battery-powered or light-up parts | Remove hardware and batteries; clean the fabric separately | Any wet cleaning with electronics attached |
| Vinyl, plastic, or EVA masks and accessories | Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and mild soap unless instructions allow immersion | Solvents, soaking, and high heat |
| Dry-clean-only, velvet, pleather, wool, or complex mixed materials | Use a costume-experienced professional cleaner | Improvised washing |
The table gives a conservative starting point, not permission to override the label. When the label and a material’s general reputation conflict, follow the label’s restriction.
Step-by-step washing workflow
- Document the label and the original assembly. Photograph the care symbols, wiring route, detachable pieces, and any areas that are already loose or cracked. This gives you a reference when putting the costume back together.
- Empty and disassemble. Remove candy, wrappers, batteries, battery packs, electronics, and detachable rigid or decorative parts. Close zippers and fasteners if the label does not prohibit it, so they do not catch neighboring fabric.
- Check colorfastness. Use the hidden-area damp-white-cloth test. If color transfers, do not combine the costume with other garments and reconsider whether professional cleaning is safer.
- Choose hand washing for delicate construction. Fill a clean basin with cool water and mild detergent. Move the garment gently through the water rather than scrubbing it. Follow the detergent label; a gentle no-rinse detergent intended for delicate costumes can be used only when the costume’s care label allows wet cleaning.
- Rinse without distortion. Replace the wash water with cool water as needed and lift the costume with both hands so wet sections are supported. Do not twist, wring, or pull on elastic, glued trim, foam, wires, or sequins. Press water out or roll the costume in a clean towel and press lightly.
- Use a machine only with explicit label approval. Put the costume in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase, select cold water and the delicate cycle, and use the lowest agitation and spin settings available under the label. A mesh laundry bag for delicate costumes helps keep trims from catching, but it does not make a non-washable costume safe to machine wash.
- Keep non-fabric parts separate. Wipe masks, EVA, plastic, and vinyl with a damp cloth and mild soap when their instructions do not allow immersion. Keep moisture away from switches, seams containing wiring, battery contacts, and openings.
- Inspect immediately after cleaning. Check seams, elastic, glued decorations, and connectors while the costume is still easy to reshape. Stop handling and arrange professional advice if a trim has detached, a panel has delaminated, or an electronic part has become wet.
Removing candy, makeup, fake blood, and sweat
Different stains can sit on different layers, so start with the least aggressive treatment that the label permits. Remove the costume’s electronics first, and test every treatment on a concealed area.
Candy, frosting, and sticky food
Lift solid pieces with a blunt edge or a clean cloth rather than grinding them into the fibers. Dab the remaining spot with cool water and a small amount of mild soap if the label allows it. Work from the outside of the mark toward the center with a clean cloth, then remove soap residue with a separate damp cloth. Do not use hot water unless the label expressly permits it, and do not put the costume in a dryer while a sticky area remains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFace paint and makeup
Blot loose makeup instead of rubbing. Use a barely damp cloth and mild soap on a washable fabric section, testing first for dye transfer. Printed details, glitter, vinyl, and glued appliqués can react differently from the surrounding cloth, so treat only the affected surface and stop if color, gloss, or decoration begins to change. Do not reach for solvents or bleach unless the care instructions specifically authorize them.
Fake blood
Remove excess material by blotting with a clean cloth. Apply cool water and mild soap only where the label permits; avoid aggressive brushing that can spread the stain or loosen decorations. If the mark remains and the costume is dry-clean-only or made from velvet, pleather, wool, vinyl, or complex mixed materials, tell the professional cleaner what caused it rather than experimenting with household chemicals.

Sweat and body oils
Wash the garment as soon as practical using the label-approved method, because prolonged storage can set residue. For a wet-cleanable piece, gentle movement in cool water with mild detergent is safer than hard scrubbing. Pay attention to collars, cuffs, waistbands, and mask-contact areas, but do not soak a structured or electronic part merely to treat an adjacent fabric panel.
Drying without shrinking or losing the shape
Never use a clothes dryer or high heat unless the care label expressly permits it. Heat can shrink or deform synthetic costumes and can damage vinyl, foam, elastic, glued trim, and wiring.

- Hang only simple, sturdy pieces when hanging will not stretch wet fabric or elastic.
- Lay bulky, foam-filled, wired, elastic, or structured parts flat.
- Reshape panels, ears, tails, wings, and padded sections while they are damp, then leave them supported in that form.
- Keep drying surfaces clean and allow air to reach every layer, lining, pocket, and seam.
Do not package the costume because the outside feels dry. A lining, foam core, folded seam, or accessory can still hold moisture. Storage begins only when the fabric and every accessory are completely dry.

Masks and plastic or EVA accessories
Unless the accessory’s own instructions allow immersion, use a damp cloth with mild soap. Wipe in small sections, then use a second damp cloth to remove soap. Keep water away from vents, seams, switches, and attachment points. Let the piece air-dry completely before placing it against clean fabric.

Foam and mascot-style pieces
Foam can hold water and lose its shape under pressure. Spot clean rather than saturating it when possible, press moisture out without twisting, and dry it flat or on a support that preserves its original form. Do not stack heavy items on it or put it through a washer or dryer unless the label explicitly permits that treatment.
Wiring, lights, and battery packs
Remove batteries and detachable hardware before any wet cleaning. Clean the fabric around the wiring separately and keep connectors, switches, and battery contacts dry. If a component cannot be removed, follow its specific care instructions instead of immersing the costume. If electronics were accidentally exposed to water, stop using them and let them dry fully before inspection; do not reconnect a damp battery pack.
How to store the costume until next Halloween
Prepare it for storage
- Confirm that every fabric layer, lining, foam section, mask, and accessory is completely dry.
- Inspect for remaining candy, makeup, fake blood, loose trim, cracked plastic, and disconnected hardware.
- Reattach only parts that are dry and secure; leave damaged electronics disconnected until they have been checked.
- Photograph the final arrangement and keep small detachable pieces together in a labeled pouch or compartment.
Choose the container and location
Place the clean, dry costume in a clean garment bag or sealed storage container. Store it in a cool, dry, mold-free area away from direct sunlight. Light can fade colors, while damp conditions can damage fabric, foam, trim, and electronics. A sealed container is appropriate only after the costume is fully dry; sealing residual moisture creates a poor storage environment.
Support structured pieces
Keep foam mascot-style heads and other structured components on a stand or otherwise supported so they are not crushed. Do not compress wired tails, padded bodies, masks, or bulky layers beneath other items. If a piece must be folded, follow its existing seams and avoid sharp bends in rigid inserts or wiring.

Troubleshooting common mistakes
The dye transfers during the test
Stop before a full wash. Keep the costume separate and use the label-approved method, which may mean professional cleaning. Further soaking or agitation can spread unstable dye into lighter sections.
The label is missing or unreadable
Do not infer washability from the fiber content or from another costume that looks similar. Treat mixed materials, glued trim, foam, vinyl, sequins, and wiring as delicate and use surface cleaning or a costume-experienced cleaner until reliable care instructions are available.
A decoration loosens during cleaning
Stop the cycle or hand washing, remove the costume without pulling the loose piece, and let it dry flat. Do not continue agitation or apply heat. Repair or have the decoration professionally secured before storage.
The costume is still damp on storage day
Leave it out to dry completely and check hidden layers, pockets, lining, and foam again. Never seal or bag a damp costume simply because the next Halloween is months away.
The shape is crushed
Remove pressure, support the item in its intended shape, and let it dry or rest without heat. Do not force rigid inserts, wired sections, or foam into position; a costume professional may be needed if the structure does not recover.
Fire and use safety
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises looking for flame-resistant fabrics or a “Flame Resistant” label when selecting costumes and avoiding loose, billowy designs near ignition sources. This is a selection and use precaution, not a reason to apply heat during cleaning. Keep the cleaned costume away from open flames, candles, heaters, and other ignition sources when it is worn or stored.
