To wash a down camping blanket without clumping, follow that blanket’s care label and warranty first. If washing is allowed, use a down-safe cleaner, rinse thoroughly, remove water without wringing, and dry only at the permitted temperature. Check the fill periodically, gently separate clumps, and do not store the blanket until no damp pockets remain.
Check the blanket’s care label and warranty
Before washing, confirm whether the specific blanket allows machine washing or requires hand washing, and note its permitted water temperature, cycle, spin, and drying method. The warranty may impose additional limits. Instructions for another quilt—even one from the same manufacturer—do not automatically apply.
For example, Enlightened Equipment’s general quilt-washing guide says, “Using a washing machine, of any kind, will void the warranty of all Enlightened Equipment products.” Its separate Accomplice FAQ describes a cool, delicate front-loader method for that particular quilt. Follow the directions for your own product rather than treating either instruction as a universal rule.
Choose the wash method the blanket allows
If hand washing is required
Use a cleaner labeled for down, in the amount stated on its packaging. Nikwax cautions against conventional detergent, and Enlightened Equipment recommends cleaning products made specifically for down. Cleaner directions do not replace the blanket’s care instructions.

For its quilts that require hand washing, Enlightened Equipment recommends securing closures, soaking the item in warm water with the directed amount of down wash, and pressing out air so water reaches the insulation. Gently knead or press water out—do not wring—and rinse repeatedly until the water runs clear. A saturated quilt can be very heavy: press out as much water as possible before moving it. A mesh bag or container can help carry it, and pressing it between dry towels can remove more moisture. This is that manufacturer’s method, not a specification for every blanket.
If machine washing is allowed
Use the cycle, temperature, spin setting, and rinse options stated on the blanket’s label. Nikwax’s down-care instructions recommend a gentle cycle, a slow spin, and extra rinsing where available. The company warns that wet down is heavy and that spinning too fast while the item still holds a lot of water may damage internal baffles. Apply this advice only if the blanket maker permits machine washing and the relevant settings.

Dry the blanket while breaking up clumps
Use only the drying method and temperature approved for the blanket. Nikwax recommends air-only or low heat when the item’s care label allows it; Enlightened Equipment says not to use heat on its quilts. Do not assume low heat is safe for every blanket, and do not leave down damp. Nikwax warns, “Leaving down wet or damp can ruin it completely.”
As the blanket dries, pause periodically to gently pull apart clumps and spread the down through its baffles. Clean tennis balls or dryer balls may help loosen clumps if the blanket maker allows them. Enlightened Equipment lists these as an aid, and Grangers recommends checking that the down is evenly distributed and adding dryer balls during drying. Balls do not prove the blanket is dry or guarantee that the fill will not clump; check and redistribute it yourself.

Do not rely on a universal drying timer. Enlightened Equipment estimates that its quilts typically take 3–5 hours to dry, sometimes longer; the actual time varies with the item and dryer. Continue checking until you find no damp pockets.
Redistribute the fill and store the blanket dry
When drying is complete, lay the blanket flat and gently move down into any areas that feel empty. Store it fully dry and uncompressed in a dry space with air circulation, rather than leaving it packed in a stuff sack, as Enlightened Equipment advises.

When to consider professional cleaning
If your blanket’s care instructions call for specialist cleaning, or you would rather not handle a delicate quilt yourself, ask the manufacturer for an appropriate service. Enlightened Equipment identifies eClean as an option for professional CO₂ cleaning of its quilts. Check directly whether the service handles your particular item and is available in your area.
