Try opening the video in Safari first: WebM playback is supported on iPhone and iPad systems with Safari/WebKit 17.4 or later. If Safari downloads the file instead, or playback fails, open it in VLC or another player that supports the file. The result can depend on how you opened the video and the codecs inside it.
Try Safari first
WebKit’s Safari 17.4 release notes, published February 27, 2024, say WebM became fully supported on iOS and iPadOS, including VP8 and VP9 video; Vorbis audio support was also added. If your device is running a system with that support, open the webpage or video link in Safari and try playback.
This does not guarantee every file will play. A .webm extension does not identify every detail of a file’s encoding, and a damaged file, server response, or third-party embedded player can still prevent playback.
If the video is on a webpage
- Open the page in Safari. If the clip is embedded and does not start, look for a direct video link on the page and try opening that link.
- If Safari downloads the video or will not play it, use a compatible player. Safari’s behavior can vary depending on whether the page embeds the video or links directly to the file. Apple’s archived guidance on compatible web content describes Safari downloading some content types it cannot handle, but it predates WebM support in iOS/iPadOS 17.4 and does not show that current Safari lacks WebM support.
- Try VLC if available. VideoLAN lists direct downloads and web, cloud, Wi-Fi, and network options for VLC for iOS and iPadOS. Its product page says VLC plays most formats without conversion; that is the vendor’s description, not a guarantee for every file.
If the WebM is already downloaded
Find the file in Files and use the share or open-in option to send it to a compatible media player if iOS or iPadOS offers one. Available actions and labels depend on the system version and installed apps. Do not assume Files or its preview will play every WebM; use a dedicated player when the built-in preview fails.

If you have a direct video URL and want VLC to download it, VideoLAN’s VLC for iOS 3.X instructions say to open VLC, go to Network > Downloads, enter the URL, and tap Download. This route requires a URL VLC can download; it is not the same as opening any webpage.
Choose a route based on where the video is

Troubleshoot playback that still fails
Apple’s media playback troubleshooting guidance, published September 21, 2026, recommends checking whether a file is damaged or unsupported, updating the operating system and app, and finding software that supports the format or filename extension.

- Check for updates. Install available iOS or iPadOS and player updates, then try again.
- Confirm the file is complete. If it came from a download, obtain it again from the source if it may have been interrupted or damaged.
- Check what the source actually provides. A .webm filename alone cannot confirm the codecs or that the download is a complete, playable video.
- Use a compatible player. If Safari and the current app do not open the file, try software that supports its format rather than repeatedly opening it in the same app.
When converting to MP4 makes sense
If you control the video or can convert a copy, H.264-encoded MP4 is Apple’s recommended format for static video on websites, according to its Safari video delivery guidance. This is a web-delivery compatibility fallback, not a requirement to convert WebM before trying it in Safari on a supported system. Keep the original if preserving its quality or format matters.
