Open Steam, choose a game in your Library, and select its Achievements page. If the game uses Achievement Sets, use the set selector to switch between the Base Game set and separate DLC, chapter, mode, character, or event sets. Each set has its own progress, locked/unlocked filters, unlock rates, and rare-achievement indicators.
Steam handles achievement viewing one game at a time. For a whole-library backlog, combine Steam’s per-game pages with a spreadsheet or an optional SteamDB achievement extension. The workflow below explains the current set rules, browser access, friend comparisons, profile surfaces, and practical tracking methods.
What Steam Achievement Sets are
An Achievement Set is a named group of achievements with separate completion tracking. Every game has a Base Game set. A developer can add additional sets for downloadable content, a game mode, a chapter, a character, or a limited-time event. A set can also be restricted to owners of specific DLC.
Separating DLC achievements prevents players who do not own an add-on from being blocked by content they cannot access. After you buy the relevant DLC, its set becomes available and can contribute to your achievement progress. The exact set names and categories are chosen by the game’s developer, so two games may organize similar content differently.

How completion is calculated
A set is complete when every achievement that is currently available in that set is unlocked. Archived achievements that you never unlocked do not count against completion. Steam also preserves a set’s completed state if a developer later adds achievements. Developers are encouraged to put new content in a new set when they want completion to remain easy to interpret.
This means the number shown beside a set can change without invalidating a completion you already earned. It also explains why a game can show a completed set even after the total number of achievements increases: the new items may be archived for the original completion state or placed in a different set.
View achievements in the Steam client
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in.
- Open Library and select the game whose achievements you want to inspect.
- Open the game’s Achievements page. Steam exposes achievement information in the Steam client, on the Steam achievements page, and on the Steam Community website.
- If the game supports sets, open the set selector and choose Base Game or the named DLC, mode, chapter, character, or event set.
- Use the progress bar and the locked/unlocked filters to isolate what you have finished and what remains.
The page is game-specific. If you return to the Library and select another title, you must open that title’s Achievements page separately; Steam does not provide one native screen that lists every unfinished achievement across your entire library.
Read the information on a set page
- Set name: identifies the content group, such as Base Game or a particular DLC.
- Progress: shows unlocked achievements against the total currently available in that set.
- Locked and unlocked filters: let you hide completed items or review only what is still outstanding.
- Global unlock rate: indicates how commonly each achievement has been earned by the relevant Steam player population.
- Rare achievements: highlights achievements with especially low global unlock rates.
Global unlock rates are useful for prioritizing unusual goals, but they are not a difficulty rating. A rare achievement may require a long campaign, a missable choice, a multiplayer partner, or simply an old game with a small active audience.

Open a game’s achievements in a browser
For a browser view, use the game’s Steam Community achievements address:
https://steamcommunity.com/achievements/<appid>
Replace <appid> with the game’s numeric Steam application ID. This page is useful when you are away from the desktop client or want to share a direct achievements address. The browser page can show the game’s achievement catalog, but a view that is not signed in to the relevant account does not provide that player’s personal progress state.
When a game has Achievement Sets, use the set controls on the page in the same way as in the client. Sign in if you need your own unlocked and locked state rather than a general catalog view.

- Open the game’s Achievements page in Steam or on Steam Community.
- Find the set selector or set filters near the achievement list.
- Select the set you want to inspect. Start with Base Game for the original release, then choose a named DLC or other content set.
- Apply the locked filter to create a to-do list for that set, or apply the unlocked filter to verify what you have already completed.
- Return to the selector to move to another set; progress is tracked independently for each one.
If a DLC set does not appear, check that the add-on is owned on the same Steam account and that Steam has finished updating the game’s license information. A developer may also have archived an old set or used a different name, so the absence of a familiar label does not by itself prove that the game has no separate DLC tracking.

Why DLC can show a separate completion state
Steam’s set model keeps non-owners from being blocked by achievements tied to paid add-ons. You can complete the Base Game set without owning every DLC set. Once you own an add-on, its achievements can be pursued and its progress can be displayed independently. This avoids mixing inaccessible goals into the original game’s completion calculation.
Compare your progress with friends
Steam’s achievement comparison view supports comparisons with up to three friends at a time. It can show completed sets and progress in DLC sets, making it possible to see not only who has more achievements overall but also which content groups account for the difference.
- Open the game’s achievements view.
- Choose the comparison option and select up to three Steam friends.
- Review the set-level and achievement-level differences, including DLC sets when those friends own the relevant content.
- Use the locked items that your friends have completed as a shortlist for goals or guide searches.
Friend comparison is a snapshot of the accounts and sets visible to Steam at that moment. It is not a historical chart of every change in a friend’s achievement history, and it cannot make a DLC set available to an account that does not own the required add-on.

When eligible, completed sets can surface on several Steam areas: your profile, Games List, Library, Recently Played surfaces, and the Completionist Showcase. Visibility depends on Steam’s current eligibility and profile settings. Completing a set therefore has a different meaning from merely unlocking a high percentage of a game’s total achievements: a completed set can receive its own profile treatment.

If a completed set is not visible immediately, revisit the game’s achievement page, allow Steam to synchronize, and check the relevant profile showcase or games-list settings. A newly added achievement does not necessarily remove a previously preserved completed state.
Track a multi-game achievement backlog
Steam’s native workflow is deliberately game-by-game. A simple personal tracker fills the gap without handing account access to another service. Create one row per game and one row per set when a title has multiple sets.

A practical backlog routine
- Open each game’s Steam achievements page and record every set name.
- Copy the unlocked and total counts for each set rather than one combined game total.
- Apply the locked filter and choose one next achievement per set.
- Mark prerequisites such as DLC ownership, multiplayer access, difficulty, or a missable story decision in the Notes column.
- After a play session, refresh the relevant set and update the count and date.
- Periodically rescan older games because developers can archive achievements or add new sets.
Keeping one row per set is especially important when a game has several DLC packs. A single combined percentage can make a nearly complete Base Game look unfinished because a separate add-on set has not been started.
Use a third-party supplement when native pages are not enough
Players who want a library-wide dashboard can supplement Steam with a tracker rather than replacing the native achievement page. Evaluate any service or extension against four practical questions:

- Native Steam support: Does it understand set filters, locked/unlocked states, DLC handling, and friend comparison?
- Scope: Does it track one game or provide a whole-library dashboard?
- Data detail: Does it retain per-set counts, unlock times, rarity, guides, or historical snapshots?
- Privacy and maintenance: Does it require a public Steam profile or account connection, and does it keep working as Steam changes its Achievement Sets implementation?
SteamDB achievement extension
The documented SteamDB browser extension can sort earned achievements by unlock time and optionally group information with Steam Hunters data. That makes it useful for chronology and backlog review when Steam’s native pages are too narrow. Treat it as a supplement: open the Steam page itself when you need the authoritative current set, DLC ownership context, or Steam’s preserved-completion behavior.
Browser extensions depend on Steam’s changing web interface. After a Steam client or Community redesign, verify that the extension still displays the correct counts and set names before relying on it for a completion record. Review its requested permissions and avoid granting account access to tools you do not trust.
Privacy and account-access considerations
Steam’s own client and Community pages use your signed-in account to show personal progress. A browser URL viewed without the appropriate account context can show a catalog without your unlock state. Third-party dashboards may require a public Steam profile, an account connection, or permission to read achievement data; those requirements differ by service.

Before connecting an account, check exactly what data is requested, whether the service stores historical snapshots, how you can revoke access, and whether your profile must remain public. If you only need a checklist, a local spreadsheet avoids sharing account credentials or profile history.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect achievement sets
The set selector is missing
- Confirm that the game actually uses Steam Achievement Sets; not every title exposes multiple sets.
- Check for a separate DLC or event label rather than assuming every add-on is represented as a set.
- Restart Steam and allow the client to finish downloads or license synchronization.
- Check the Steam Community page for the same game to determine whether the issue is client-specific.
A DLC set is not available
- Verify ownership of the DLC on the account currently signed in.
- Make sure the DLC is installed or activated as required by that game.
- Remember that developers can restrict a set to DLC owners or archive old content.
The count changed after an update
Recheck the set name and the locked/unlocked filter. Steam can add achievements, archive old ones, or place new content in a new set. A previously completed set can remain complete even when the game’s overall achievement catalog grows, so compare the set-level state rather than assuming the total game count tells the whole story.
An achievement appears unlocked in-game but not on Steam
Return to the Steam achievements page after the game has synchronized, then restart the client if necessary. If the item remains missing, record the game, set, achievement name, and approximate unlock time before contacting the game developer’s support channel. Avoid third-party unlock tools: they can create inaccurate records and may violate a game’s rules.

Best-practice workflow
- Start with Steam’s own Achievements page for the game.
- Record every set separately, beginning with Base Game and then each available DLC or custom set.
- Use the locked filter to select a realistic next target instead of treating the entire game as one task.
- Use global unlock rates and rare labels to identify unusual goals, not to estimate difficulty.
- Compare with up to three friends when you want ideas or a cooperative target.
- Copy set counts and next goals into a local spreadsheet if you are managing several games.
- Use a third-party extension only for extra sorting or historical convenience, and recheck its output against Steam after interface changes.
