A jersey is only game-worn if an athlete actually wore it in a game or competitive event. A correct player name, team tag, certificate, or hologram may support a claim, but none proves game use on its own. Verify the specific garment by checking the exact claim, independently confirming any official identifier, tracing its provenance, and—where possible—matching distinctive features to dated game photographs or video.
First, establish exactly what the seller is claiming
Terms that sound similar describe different things. Ask the seller to identify the category in writing before evaluating the evidence.
- Game-worn: The athlete actually wore the jersey in a game or competitive event.
- Game-issued or player-issued: The jersey was prepared for or made available to a player, but actual use has not been established.
- Game-used: An item used in a game; check the issuer’s description to establish whether that means worn by a player or used in another way.
- Authentic or licensed merchandise: A product made or licensed as official merchandise. This label alone does not establish that it was issued to or worn by a player.
Correct tags, size, customization, or team ownership can be consistent with a genuine team garment while still falling short of proof that it saw game action. For example, the St. Louis Blues’ program distinguishes authentic game-used equipment from locker-room-issued jerseys. Read the category and full description on the Blues’ game-used page; some end-of-season or sale items are identified as practice-only or remaining equipment and do not come with a certificate of authenticity.
Check league or team identifiers independently
For MLB authentication holograms
Find the hologram on the item, then enter its unique prefix and serial number in MLB’s authentication database. Compare the returned record with the jersey in hand and the seller’s precise claim: the item description, category, and any other identifying details should make sense for the garment being sold.

MLB says holograms for licensed products are different from game-used authentication holograms and will not appear in its authentication database. A licensed-product hologram is therefore not evidence that a jersey was worn in a game. These instructions describe MLB’s program, not a universal lookup method for every sport or league.
If an MLB record is missing or appears incorrect, MLB advises collectors to contact its authentication program with a hologram image and item details. A missing entry alone does not establish fraud. MLB also says it does not appraise memorabilia and does not authenticate past items submitted independently; its program authenticates eligible items witnessed at the time of signing or use with a club or MLB licensee. For team programs and other sports
Do not assume a code, label, or certificate works the same way across leagues. Find the relevant team or league’s official program and check whether it offers an item-specific lookup, what category the record represents, and whether the item description matches the physical jersey. The Blues, for instance, describe signed certificates of authenticity and serial-number lookup for specific program categories on their game-used page.
Evaluate the certificate as a claim, not a verdict
Inspect who issued the certificate, whether its item number and description match the garment, and whether the issuer provides a lookup or underlying record. A certificate that cannot be tied to a verifiable issuer record is a claim to investigate, not conclusive proof of game use.

Read the conclusion precisely. A certificate might support an autograph, a team-issued category, or a photo match without establishing that the jersey was worn in a game. Even a genuine certificate is useful only to the extent that its scope covers the claim being made about this item. MLB’s eligibility limits and the Blues’ category-specific documentation illustrate why the issuing program and exact category matter (MLB; St. Louis Blues).
Trace the jersey’s history and inspect its construction
Ask for the sale record and a clear account of earlier ownership and transfers. Compare the garment’s tags, size, customization, construction, and any alterations or repairs with reliable examples from the claimed team, player, and period. Keep the listing and seller correspondence so you can compare the original claim with any later documentation.

Inspect wear carefully, but do not treat a mark as proof by itself. Stains, fading, loose threads, repairs, or damage may be consistent with use, yet they can also have other explanations. Conversely, a clean-looking jersey is not automatically unused. Authentication reviewers describe provenance and garment details as relevant inputs, not individually decisive tests (Grey Flannel Auctions; PhotoMatchForensics).

A useful photo match connects the particular jersey to a dated photograph or video—not merely to a similar jersey from the same team. Compare the images at the closest available resolution and look for combinations of distinctive features, such as:

- Loose or exposed threads, unusual stitching, or repairs.
- Folds, deformations, mesh patterns, or puckering around letters and numbers.
- Stains, discoloration, wear, or damage in the same locations.
- The alignment and spacing of letters, numbers, logos, or patches.
One apparent similarity can be coincidental. A persuasive match relies on several identifiable details that align between the images and the garment. PhotoMatchForensics and Grey Flannel describe such visual characteristics as relevant to their reviews (PhotoMatchForensics; Grey Flannel Auctions).
Use this buying workflow before paying
- Get the claim in writing. Ask whether the jersey is represented as game-worn, game-used, team-issued, player-issued, or licensed merchandise.
- Request useful photographs. Ask for clear images of the front, back, labels, tags, name and number application, patches, wear, damage, and every hologram or item number. Save the listing and seller messages.
- Verify official identifiers yourself. Use the issuing league or team’s official lookup, where available, and compare the record to both the physical item and the sales description.
- Review provenance and construction. Trace the ownership and sale history, then compare tags, customization, construction, and wear with reliable examples from the claimed period.
- Escalate high-value or disputed claims. Consider a specialist review or photo match, and read what the resulting certificate does—and does not—conclude.
When comparing two jerseys, weigh how specific and independent each item’s provenance is, whether an identifier resolves to a matching record, whether the category actually means game-worn, whether construction fits the claimed player and period, and whether dated images show distinctive matching features. More paperwork is valuable only if it corresponds to the garment being sold.
When specialist review is worth considering
For an expensive purchase or a disagreement over a match, a specialist may document the analysis and its limits. PSA says its Photo Match service examines unique attributes, searches visual libraries, and provides a Photo Match Certificate with a verifiable certification number after a successful match. PSA also states that certification involves subjective professional judgment. Treat a result as evidence within its stated scope, not an infallible guarantee. Details are on PSA’s Photo Match page.
MLB says it has authenticated more than six million items since its program began in 2001; that is a cumulative figure reported on its current, undated program page, not an annual rate. In MLB’s September 22, 2021 account of the process, director of authentication Michael Posner said, “We’re here to record history.” The account describes evidence collection and chain-of-custody documentation within MLB’s program; it should not be read as a rule that applies to every sport. Know when the evidence is not enough
If identifiers do not resolve, the certificate’s category conflicts with the seller’s description, or the seller will not provide enough detail to examine the item, do not upgrade the claim to “game-worn.” Treat it as unverified unless stronger, item-specific evidence resolves the gap. No single hologram, certificate, tag, wear mark, or visual inspection can establish the claim on its own.
