To verify an NVIDIA GPU, establish two things separately: the country of origin of the specific item, and its export classification and authorization for the specific transaction. Start with the full part number and unit or shipment records, check NVIDIA’s classification lookup, validate the ECCN against current Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) criteria, and then assess the destination, parties, end use, and any required authorization. Neither an ECCN nor a country-of-origin marking answers the other question.

What you need to verify

There are two different determinations:

  • Origin: where the particular GPU, board, or system is considered to have originated for the relevant customs or trade purpose. Evidence should be tied to the actual unit, lot, or shipment.
  • Export-control status: how the item is classified under applicable export rules and whether a particular shipment, reexport, or transfer is permitted or needs authorization.

A GPU’s design location, a seller’s address, or NVIDIA’s corporate location does not establish the item’s origin. Likewise, an ECCN is an export classification, not proof of where a unit was made. An ECCN alone also does not establish that a shipment is allowed.

Verify the GPU’s identity first

Before using a lookup or asking a supplier for records, identify the item as precisely as possible. A product-family name may cover different boards, systems, or configurations; it is not a substitute for matching the specific part.

  • Record the product family and complete part number for the chip, board, or system, as applicable.
  • Record the model and any serial number or lot identifier shown on the item or its packaging.
  • Keep the seller’s identity and the relevant invoice, packing list, label photographs, and supplier statements with the item record.
  • For a shipment containing multiple configurations or lots, identify each one rather than treating the shipment as a single generic GPU product.

Use this verification workflow

  1. Inspect the actual item and its packaging

Photograph the product label and packaging markings, and record the part number and serial or lot identifier if present. A marking is useful evidence to investigate, but where origin has customs or tariff consequences, do not treat a label alone as a final legal determination.

    • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
    • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
  2. Request traceable origin records

Ask the supplier for manufacturing or commercial documentation that connects the stated origin to the particular unit, lot, or shipment. Compare the documents with the item identifiers, invoice, and packing list. If the records conflict, are generic, or do not connect to the item, record the uncertainty and seek a determination from the responsible customs authority or a qualified trade professional.

  3. Look up NVIDIA’s stated classification

Search NVIDIA’s official product classification resource using the complete part number, or a sufficiently precise description. NVIDIA Support directs users seeking an ECCN or HTS number to search that resource by part number or description. Save the result and the date retrieved alongside the identity information. NVIDIA describes the entries as informational, provided as-is, and subject to change without notice; the lookup does not establish a specific unit’s origin or decide whether a transaction is authorized.

  4. Check the ECCN against BIS technical criteria

Use BIS’s current Commerce Control List (CCL) and compare the ECCN’s technical parameters with the actual product and configuration. Do not choose a classification only because a keyword or family name appears to match. BIS’s Interactive Commerce Control List instructs: “After finding a potential ECCN match, expand the accordion to ensure your item fits the technical specifications listed.” If the match remains uncertain, BIS provides a route to request a commodity classification.

  5. Review the specific transaction under the EAR

Assess the current Export Administration Regulations (EAR) for the transaction—not just the product model. Review the destination, consignee and ultimate parent, end user, end use, any reexport or in-country transfer, applicable prohibitions, license requirements, and whether a license exception is available and valid. BIS treats classification and these transaction factors as distinct parts of the licensing review; the same model can have different outcomes in different transactions.

  6. Keep an auditable record and recheck before shipment

Retain the item and part-number match, origin evidence, dated NVIDIA lookup result, technical basis for the ECCN, party and destination screening, end-use review, authorization analysis, and any license or official ruling. Recheck close to shipment and whenever the item, destination, parties, end use, or transfer facts change.

Compare GPUs or shipments consistently

When reviewing more than one item or shipment, compare the same fields for each record. This makes missing evidence visible and helps prevent a classification or origin finding for one configuration from being applied automatically to another.

How to handle uncertainty and changing rules

If NVIDIA’s entry, the product specifications, and the supplier’s description do not line up, do not force a match based on the closest family name. Confirm the exact configuration and technical characteristics; use BIS’s classification-request process if the ECCN remains uncertain. For unresolved origin questions with customs or tariff consequences, consult the responsible customs authority or qualified trade professional.

Export-control requirements can change. NVIDIA’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes restrictions affecting products and destinations as reported in that filing and warns that requirements may change. Its references to product families including A100, H100, B200, and GB200 are historical company-reported context, not current shipment authorization for those models. Apply the rules in force for the actual transaction date by checking current BIS materials and the EAR.
