Use the final order-review or payment screen as the price you authorize—not the product-page headline. Confirm the seller, variant, quantity, destination and membership status, expand the complete breakup, test every discount condition, and make sure your own calculation matches the displayed payable total before you submit payment.
Why the product-page price is not the amount you should approve
An Indian e-commerce listing can show a useful starting price without showing the complete amount for your order. The payable figure may change when you select a different seller, size, color, pack quantity, delivery PIN code, address, membership status or payment method. A coupon may appear available but fail a minimum-spend rule; a bank promotion may apply only to a particular card or EMI option; delivery and service charges may be calculated only after the destination is known.
For that reason, compare and make your decision at the final order-review stage. The number on that screen should include the merchandise total, every mandatory charge, any optional service you selected and only the discounts that the checkout has actually applied. Do not authorize a payment based on a search result, advertisement, cart preview or verbal promise from a seller.
Lock the details that determine your price
Before comparing listings or beginning the arithmetic, fix the variables that can change the total. Record them in a note so that two checkouts are genuinely comparable.

Seller and listing identity
- Check the exact seller name, seller rating information shown by the platform and whether the item is sold by the platform or an independent merchant.
- Confirm that the listing is for the same model, edition, color, storage or capacity, size and bundle contents. A superficially similar listing can have a different warranty or accessory set.
- Verify the quantity or pack size. A low headline price may represent one unit while another listing displays a multi-pack.
Delivery destination and timing
- Enter the actual delivery PIN code or address before judging shipping or service charges. Fees, delivery dates and eligibility can change by location.
- Note the promised delivery date and whether the displayed date depends on a membership benefit or a particular fulfilment option.
Account and offer status
- Sign in if the offer requires an account, then check whether a membership is active. Do not compare a member-only total with a non-member total.
- Write down the coupon code, bank or wallet promotion, cashback wording and any minimum-spend, card-type, EMI, payment-channel or validity conditions.
Audit the final order-review screen step by step
Perform this audit immediately before payment, after all items and options are selected. Labels differ between platforms, so treat any line that changes the amount as part of the price breakup even if its name is unfamiliar.
- Confirm the order identity. Recheck seller, product variant, quantity, delivery address and membership indicator on the review screen. Remove an unintended substitute or duplicate item.
- Open every breakup control. Expand links such as View price details, Show more, Taxes and fees or Order summary. A collapsed panel can hide mandatory charges.
- Record the item subtotal. Add the displayed price for each unit and quantity. If several products are in the order, keep a separate subtotal for each line so a later cancellation can be reconciled.
- Record discounts separately. Capture automatic markdowns, seller discounts and coupons as individual lines. A discount shown as available but not applied is not part of your calculation.
- Inspect tax lines. Look for GST or another tax line and determine whether the displayed item price already includes it. Never add GST a second time, and never assume it is included if the breakup does not say so.
- Inspect fulfilment and service charges. Record delivery or shipping, platform or marketplace fees, handling or convenience fees, protection plans, service add-ons and any other mandatory line.
- Check the payment method. Select the method you will actually use and look for a payment-method surcharge, wallet fee, EMI processing cost or a change in discount. A different method can produce a different total.
- Recalculate and compare. Use the formula below. The amount your calculation produces must equal the final payable amount displayed beside the authorization button.
- Capture evidence before authorizing. Save a screenshot or PDF of the expanded breakup, including the address or PIN code where it is shown. Note the date and time and retain the cart or order reference.
- Stop if the number changes. If the gateway, bank page or confirmation step shows a different amount, do not approve it. Return to the review page, refresh, reselect the intended method and contact support if the discrepancy remains.
What each line item means and what to question
The following checklist helps you decide whether a line is part of the amount you must pay, an optional choice or a discount with conditions.

If a label is unclear, open its information icon or terms link and save the explanation with your evidence. A charge that you cannot identify is a reason to pause, not a reason to guess.

item prices + mandatory charges + selected optional charges − valid discounts = final payable amount

Include every mandatory charge: tax, delivery, platform or marketplace fee, handling or convenience fee and payment surcharge. Include an optional protection or service add-on only if you intentionally selected it. Subtract a coupon or bank benefit only when the review page has applied it and displays the resulting reduction.
Illustrative calculation
The numbers below are only a method demonstration, not a statement of prevailing rates. Replace them with the figures on your own review screen.

If your arithmetic differs by even a small amount, check rounding, quantities, a tax-included label and whether a promotion was removed when you selected the payment method. Do not treat a discrepancy as harmless until the platform explains it.
Test discounts instead of assuming them
Coupons and minimum-spend rules
A coupon may require a minimum eligible value, exclude sale items, limit the number of uses or apply only to a particular seller. The relevant test is the amount after the platform evaluates the cart, not the amount you hoped would qualify. Remove an excluded item or change quantity only if you still want the resulting order; never add unwanted products merely to reach a threshold.
Bank, wallet and EMI promotions
Read the issuer, card network, transaction channel, minimum amount, maximum discount and EMI requirement. A promotion can disappear when you choose a different card, a wallet, Pay on Delivery or an alternative gateway. Some offers are instant discounts; others are cashback credited later. Count only the instant reduction in the amount you authorize, and treat later cashback as a separate benefit.

Membership pricing
Membership can waive delivery or unlock a price without eliminating other charges. Compare both orders with the same signed-in status and the same destination. If a trial membership is offered, check its renewal terms separately from the product total.
Recognize drip pricing and understand the Indian rule
Adding an unavoidable charge only at the last step is a warning sign commonly described as drip pricing. The Press Information Bureau’s explanation of enforcement under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 says Rule 7(1)(e) requires the total price, inclusive of all charges and taxes, to be displayed upfront. Its wording is: “the total price, inclusive of all charges and taxes, to be displayed upfront.”
In practical terms, a checkout should not make you discover an unavoidable fee only after you have invested time entering payment details. A fee can still vary when legitimate order facts become known, such as the delivery PIN code or a different optional service, but the platform should identify the charge and show the resulting total before authorization. Save the product page, cart and final breakup when a mandatory amount appears unexpectedly.
The Department of Consumer Affairs publishes the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 and related amendments. The CCPA orders database also lists two inflated-price matters involving major marketplace entities, both dated 14 October 2026. Those listings show that concerns about inflated prices have been the subject of named enforcement matters, so retaining a clear record of what was displayed is worthwhile.
Platform fees are policy examples, not an India-wide rate
A 2025 explanation published by a large Indian marketplace described a ₹5 marketplace fee per order, inclusive of tax. It also described exceptions for some digital purchases, Pay on Delivery, prepaid orders with certain offer-processing fees and exchange fees, plus partial-refund treatment when an item is cancelled before shipment.

That example does not establish a universal Indian fee. A different platform, seller, category, payment method or order status can use another amount or no fee. Treat the exact line on your own checkout as controlling. If a fee is described as per order, verify whether combining items changes the effective cost; if it is per item, check each line. When an item is cancelled, compare the revised breakup and refund against the original fee terms rather than assuming every charge is returned.
Compare two listings by complete totals
Headline price is only one comparison field. Open both checkouts with the same destination, quantity and payment assumptions, then use this grid.

A lower headline price is preferable only when the complete payable total and the associated terms remain better. If one checkout has an uncertain or undisclosed line, treat that uncertainty as a cost until clarified.

Keep a folder or email trail for each significant purchase. Save the expanded final breakup as a screenshot or PDF, the order ID, the invoice after payment, the product and seller details, and any chat or email in which support explains a fee. Include the date, time, destination and payment method if they appear on the screen. These records let you distinguish a display change from a post-order billing error.

Do not rely on a screenshot of only the product price. It cannot establish whether delivery, tax or a platform fee was shown later. Capture the full visible summary and, where practical, the terms attached to a coupon, bank offer or service add-on.

What to do when the amount changes before payment
Different total after selecting a payment method
Return to the breakup and identify the changed line. A bank promotion may have been removed, an EMI or processing fee may have appeared, or a wallet discount may apply only to a particular channel. Choose the method you intended, recalculate and save the new review screen. If the reason remains unexplained, stop and contact support before authorizing.
Different total on the payment gateway
Do not approve a gateway amount that exceeds the order-review total. Exit or cancel the transaction if possible, refresh the order page and check whether the order was created. Contact support with the saved review evidence and request confirmation of the amount that would be captured.
Price changes after a refresh
Record both breakups, including the time and order reference. Check whether inventory, seller, quantity, delivery option or offer status changed. If the platform cannot restore the displayed terms, decide using the new complete total rather than the old headline and avoid paying until you understand the difference.

When payment succeeds, compare the bank or wallet debit, the order confirmation and the invoice. The captured amount should correspond to the final amount you authorized. An invoice may show tax or seller details in a different layout, so reconcile line by line rather than comparing only the total label.
If the charged amount is higher, contact the platform promptly with the order ID, saved breakup, payment reference and invoice. Ask for an itemized explanation and the correction or refund process. If an item is cancelled before shipment, check the stated fee and partial-refund policy; do not assume that every marketplace or service fee is automatically returned. Keep all correspondence and note promised resolution dates.
Information expected under the 2027 amendment
A government amendment release dated 10 September 2026 says marketplace entities must provide key information including best-before or use-before dates, return and refund terms, warranty, delivery and payment details. The release announces that the amended rules come into force on 1 January 2027.
Until that date, and after it, verify the current wording shown by the platform because implementation details and policies can change. For products with an expiry or best-before date, check that the date information is visible and matches what you intend to buy. For every purchase, retain the displayed return, refund, warranty, delivery and payment terms alongside the price breakup. Recheck the requirements after 1 January 2027 rather than assuming an announcement alone describes the final interface on every site.

Common mistakes and the fix for each
- Comparing different quantities: Normalize pack count and calculate the cost for the quantity you actually need.
- Adding GST twice: Read whether the item price is tax-inclusive before adding the separate tax line.
- Subtracting an unconfirmed coupon: Count it only when the review page shows the discount as applied.
- Ignoring delivery by using a generic PIN code: Enter the recipient’s real destination before comparing.
- Leaving a protection plan selected: Review optional boxes and remove anything you did not intentionally choose.
- Assuming membership makes everything free: Check the final breakup for remaining tax, platform, handling or payment charges.
- Comparing one listing’s instant discount with another’s future cashback: Separate the amount due now from benefits that arrive later.
- Trusting a rounded cart total: Expand the breakup and perform your own addition.
- Paying after a last-second change: Stop, refresh and obtain an explanation before authorization.
- Discarding records after delivery: Keep the breakup, invoice and order ID until the return, refund and warranty period has ended.
A reusable pre-payment checklist
- Seller, variant, quantity and pack contents match what you intend to buy.
- Delivery PIN code or address is the real destination.
- Membership status is the same for every listing being compared.
- Coupon, bank, wallet and EMI conditions are understood and the benefits appear as applied.
- Every breakup section is expanded.
- Item subtotal, discounts, tax, delivery, platform, handling, convenience, add-on and payment charges are recorded.
- Your equation matches the displayed final payable amount.
- The payment page shows the same amount as the review page.
- Screenshot or PDF, order ID and terms are saved before authorization.
- Invoice and captured amount will be checked after payment.
The decision rule
Pay only when the seller and item are correct, all mandatory charges are visible, conditional discounts have actually applied and your independent arithmetic equals the amount the payment button will authorize. If any of those checks fails, the safest next step is to pause, preserve the evidence and obtain a clear breakup before proceeding.
