Do not trade on a forum tip until you can verify the person, the claim, and the incentives behind it. Treat every Reddit post, Discord message, bulletin-board comment, or group-chat alert as an unverified lead. Preserve the original post, check the author through the appropriate regulator, convert predictions into testable facts, confirm those facts in filings and issuer or regulator announcements, and look for manipulation signals. If a material claim cannot be independently confirmed, document it as unverified and do not trade on it.
What verification can—and cannot—tell you
Verification is a process for deciding whether a statement is supported by reliable evidence. It is not a way to make a speculative trade safe, predict a price, or prove that a security is suitable for you. A registered adviser can still be wrong, an authentic company announcement can still be negative for shareholders, and a post with a verified account badge can still be misleading.
The strongest evidence normally comes from primary records: regulatory filings, an issuer’s investor-relations disclosure, an exchange notice, or a regulator announcement. Anonymous posts, screenshots, reposts, sentiment scores, and claims of “inside information” are leads to investigate, not evidence to accept. The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance states, “Always check the background of someone offering you an investment.”
No regulator publishes a universal accuracy rate for investment-forum tips. A poster’s past successes, follower count, or apparent hit rate therefore cannot substitute for checking each material claim.

A ten-step workflow for checking a tip
1. Preserve the original evidence
Save the post’s exact URL, account handle, date and time, ticker symbol, screenshots, linked files, and the profile’s visible history. Capture the entire thread, including replies and disclaimers, rather than a cropped image. Note whether the author edited or deleted the post; save an archived copy where lawful and practical. Record the time zone and the market session, because a message posted before an opening bell or after a filing can have a different meaning from one posted during trading.
Do not rely on a repost, a forwarded message, or a screenshot without a source link. Those copies can omit corrections, alter timestamps, or remove disclosures. Preserve evidence before contacting the poster: a scammer may delete the account or change the wording after prices move.
2. Authenticate the source
Determine whether the account is really associated with the person or firm it names. Compare the handle, spelling, logo, profile photo, email domain, telephone number, and website with the firm’s official contact details and Form CRS, when applicable. Impersonators often use a look-alike name, an extra character, a recently created account, or a copied logo. A blue or other platform badge confirms only what that platform’s program covers; it does not establish financial expertise or the truth of a post.
Search for the same statement on the purported firm’s official website and investor-relations page. Use contact information you find independently, not a number or direct-message link supplied by the poster. A legitimate professional should not object to being contacted through the firm’s published channel.
3. Check licensing and disciplinary history
For a U.S. investment adviser or representative, search the SEC’s Investor.gov adviser database and the Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) system. For a broker or brokerage representative, search FINRA BrokerCheck. For a U.K. firm, use the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) Firm Checker. Search the exact legal name, employer, location, and registration number; similar names can produce a false match.
A registration result confirms an identity or authorization status at the time shown. It does not endorse a tip, guarantee performance, establish that a recommendation is suitable, or eliminate conflicts. Read the disciplinary history, employment record, business activities, and disclosures rather than stopping at a “found” result. If the poster claims to be an adviser but cannot be matched to the relevant register, stop treating the account as a professional source.
4. Separate facts from predictions
Rewrite the post into individual statements that could be proved or disproved. For example:

- “Company X signed contract Y” is a factual claim that should have a document or announcement.
- “The next earnings report will beat estimates” is a prediction; it cannot be verified in advance as a fact.
- “The regulator approved product Z” is a factual claim that should appear in a regulator or issuer record.
- “The share price will double” is a price target, not evidence of an event.
Mark opinions, price targets, probability language, and time frames separately. A post can contain one true fact and an unsupported prediction; verifying the first does not validate the second. Ask what observation would prove the statement wrong and by what date. Claims that cannot be falsified should receive little weight.

5. Verify primary records
Search the SEC’s EDGAR database for the issuer’s filings, including current reports, periodic reports, registration statements, offering documents, and exhibits. Check the issuer’s investor-relations releases and the exchange on which the security trades for notices. For a claimed approval, investigation, contract, merger, financing, or executive change, look for the corresponding regulator announcement or signed filing.
Read the whole document, not just a headline or a quoted paragraph. A filing may describe a proposed transaction, a contingent agreement, a related-party arrangement, or a risk factor rather than a completed event. Confirm the filing date, reporting period, amendments, materiality language, and whether the issuer says information is preliminary. SEC investor guidance recommends doing this homework and checking EDGAR; it also warns that a filing or registration does not make an investment good.
If the post cites a document, open the original file and compare the quoted passage with the surrounding text. A fabricated PDF, altered screenshot, or outdated filing is not primary evidence.

Place the post on a timeline with unusual trading volume, price changes, financings, options activity, lock-up expirations, earnings dates, court decisions, and scheduled announcements. A sudden burst of messages immediately before a financing or promotional campaign may indicate an attempt to create demand. A post made after a public announcement is not evidence that the author had secret access to it.
Identify who benefits if readers buy, sell, click, subscribe, or send money. Look for statements that the author owns shares, receives compensation, earns referral fees, operates an affiliate link, represents an issuer, or is paid for promotion. Compare the disclosure with the author’s language and posting history. An undisclosed financial interest is a conflict even when the underlying fact is true.
7. Test for manipulation patterns
Be especially skeptical when several of these signals appear together:
- “Buy now” or countdown language that discourages verification.
- Guaranteed returns, claims of no risk, or promises that losses will be reimbursed.
- Secret, confidential, or “insider” information offered to strangers.
- Unsolicited direct messages asking you to move to a private chat or send money.
- Very short account histories, aliases, copied biographies, or a sudden change in posting topics.
- Many accounts repeating identical wording, hashtags, images, or price targets.
- Promotion of a low-priced, thinly traded security with little public information.
- Pressure to bypass a broker, use a particular platform, or provide credentials or remote computer access.
SEC guidance on bulletin boards and internet fraud warns that aliases can create the appearance of widespread interest. The FCA describes pump-and-dump schemes in which social-media hype attracts buyers before promoters sell. A popular thread can therefore be evidence of coordination, not independent confirmation.

Post counts, “bullish” scores, keyword dashboards, and automated social-sentiment signals can help you find material to read, but they cannot establish that a claim is true. Bots can generate volume, sarcasm can reverse the meaning of a phrase, and coordinated accounts can manufacture a trend. FINRA and the SEC advise investors not to rely on these tools alone.

Before using a score, read the provider’s methodology, data coverage, update frequency, bot-handling rules, confidence measures, and conflict disclosures. Check whether deleted posts, private groups, non-English text, and duplicate messages are included. Compare the tool’s output with the underlying posts and with primary records. Never treat an algorithmic score as a substitute for a filing or a regulator notice.
9. Decide and document
Create a short verification log. Record each claim, the source checked, the date and time checked, what was confirmed, what was contradicted, and what remains unknown. Mark evidence that may become stale, such as an uncompleted contract or a pending regulatory decision.
If a material claim is not confirmed in primary records, label it unverified and do not trade because of it. Do not upgrade a claim merely because several anonymous accounts repeat it. If you independently decide to research the security further, base that decision on your own objectives, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, and a complete review of the issuer—not on the forum’s urgency.
10. Report suspected fraud
Preserve the evidence and report suspected impersonation, manipulation, or unlicensed solicitation to the regulator with jurisdiction over the conduct. U.S. matters can be reported to the SEC or FINRA; U.K. matters can be reported to the FCA. Your local securities regulator may be appropriate when the poster, firm, or transaction is elsewhere.
Do not send money, account credentials, identity documents, one-time codes, or remote-access permissions to a forum contact. If you already shared credentials, contact the financial institution through an independently verified channel, change passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and monitor accounts. Reporting does not recover every loss, so preserving evidence before a post disappears matters.
How to compare two tips or sources
Popularity is a poor tie-breaker. Compare the sources on the dimensions below and give the greatest weight to primary evidence and disclosure. A source that attracts many followers but scores poorly on documentation should not outrank a smaller source that links to a verifiable filing.

Use the table to identify what still needs checking, not to calculate a numerical “trust score.” A single severe problem—such as an impersonated identity, an unlicensed solicitation, or a fabricated filing—can be enough to reject the source.
Why low-priced and thinly traded shares require extra caution
FINRA warns that low-priced stocks can present major problems. When few shares trade, a small number of orders or promotional posts can move the quoted price sharply. Wide spreads, limited public information, difficulty selling, and sudden trading halts can make an apparent gain impossible to realize. False or exaggerated information can have a larger price effect in such a market than in a highly liquid security.

Check average volume, bid-ask spread, exchange status, recent financings, dilution, and the issuer’s latest filings before considering any transaction. Do not infer liquidity from a displayed quote or from the number of comments in a forum. A large online audience and a small real market can coexist.
Handling claims of insider information
“Insider” language is a manipulation signal, not a credibility badge. Ask whether the information is already public, whether the poster identifies a lawful source, and whether an official filing or announcement confirms it. Do not request, forward, or trade on material nonpublic information. If a message appears to solicit trading on confidential information, preserve it and report it to the relevant regulator or your broker’s compliance department.
An author who correctly predicted one event may have recognized a public calendar date, guessed, or selected a successful call from many failures. Only a documented, lawful source and a primary record can establish what is known publicly; a claim of privileged access cannot.

Jurisdiction and registration checks
Registration systems are jurisdiction-specific. A U.S. registration does not authorize a person to solicit clients in every country, and an FCA entry does not prove that an account on a social platform belongs to that firm. Check the register that covers the service, the firm’s legal entity, and the place where you are being solicited.
- United States advisers: Investor.gov and IAPD provide adviser registration and disclosure information.
- United States brokers: FINRA BrokerCheck provides registration, employment, and certain disclosure information.
- United Kingdom firms: the FCA Firm Checker helps determine whether a firm is authorized and whether its details match.
A “no result” can reflect a spelling error or a different legal entity, so repeat the search using the formal name shown in a regulatory or corporate document. If the identity still cannot be established, do not send money or rely on the recommendation.

Keeping this record prevents hindsight from changing what was actually known when the post appeared. It also gives a regulator or broker useful evidence if the conduct becomes suspicious.

Confusing popularity with corroboration
Thousands of likes can come from bots, coordinated accounts, or people repeating one unverified origin. Count independent primary records, not reactions.

Checking only the headline
A headline may omit a qualification, a proposed status, or a risk factor. Read the filing or announcement and its date.
Assuming a professional label is proof
“Analyst,” “fund manager,” and “insider” are self-descriptions until identity and authorization are verified. Even a registered professional’s recommendation requires independent review.
Ignoring conflicts because the fact is true
A promoter can accurately describe a contract while concealing that they plan to sell into the demand they create. Verify both the event and the incentive.

Using a sentiment dashboard as a trade signal
Automated scores can misclassify context and be manipulated. Inspect methodology and return to the underlying records.
Sending information to “unlock” research
Legitimate regulatory databases and issuer filings do not require a forum contact to receive your password, one-time code, remote access, or a transfer of funds. Stop communicating and report the solicitation.
A decision rule you can apply quickly
- Pause: do not buy, sell, or forward the tip while it is still a rumor.
- Preserve: save the original post and its context.
- Identify: match the person or firm to the relevant regulator and official contact details.
- Translate: split the message into factual claims and predictions.
- Verify: check EDGAR, issuer disclosures, exchange notices, and regulator announcements.
- Inspect incentives: find ownership, compensation, referral arrangements, and timing around market events.
- Reject or record: if a material claim remains unverified, do not trade on it; document the uncertainty and report suspicious conduct.
This rule deliberately favors waiting. A genuine announcement will normally remain available in an official record, while a manufactured rumor depends on speed, secrecy, and the inability of readers to check it.
