Before sharing protest footage, verify the claim attached to it—not just whether the image looks genuine. Check who posted it, whether it appeared earlier, where and when it was recorded, and whether the audio and visible details fit the caption. These checks build confidence, but no single search or clue proves the full context. If important facts remain uncertain, label the media unverified and pause before sharing.
Start by separating the media from the claim
Write down what the post says: for example, that a particular protest took place at a named location on a specific date, or that a clip shows a particular incident. Then describe only what is directly visible or audible in the image or video. A real recording can still be presented with the wrong place, date, event or explanation.
Keep those questions distinct as you investigate. A clip may be genuine but old; its location may be right while its date is wrong; or the recording may show a protest without proving the caption’s account of what happened. Bellingcat’s beginner’s guide to social media verification cautions against reducing verification to a simple real-or-fake judgment.
Check who posted it and how they got it
Look for the earliest accessible post, then assess whether the uploader appears to have been present or has identified the original filmer. Review the account’s history and any accompanying explanation. If contact is possible, ask where and when the media was recorded and whether the person recorded it themselves. Compare the answer with independent clues rather than treating a confident reply or caption as proof.

Provenance can be incomplete: a person sharing a clip may not be its creator, and an account’s apparent identity does not establish that it witnessed the event. Bellingcat’s guide recommends examining source and context; Amnesty International’s video-authentication guidance describes comparing an uploader’s account with metadata and geolocation checks. Metadata may be absent or unreliable, so it is one clue rather than a verdict.
Search for earlier appearances
For video
- Pause on distinctive frames: look for recognizable signs, buildings, clothing, banners or other details that are less likely to appear in unrelated footage.
- Take screenshots, or use thumbnails generated by the platform hosting the video, and run reverse-image searches on them.
- Search distinctive words visible in the frame—such as a street sign or banner—and phrases from the caption. Open likely matches and compare the post dates, descriptions and surrounding context.
For still images
Run reverse-image searches and search for distinctive visible text or landmarks. Check any likely earlier matches against the claimed event and date rather than assuming that the first result is the original.
An earlier appearance can reveal that an image has been recycled, edited or recaptioned. But a search that finds no match does not prove the media is new or original: edits, crops, overlays and reposts can prevent a match. Bellingcat’s guide to verifying video content explains screenshot and thumbnail searches and their limits. Amnesty also describes thumbnails as a way to uncover previous versions, while treating prior-circulation checks as only one part of verification.

Check the location independently
Compare visible details—street signs, building fronts, road layouts, terrain and distinctive landmarks—with maps, street-level imagery, independent photographs or reporting. Prefer multiple distinct details that fit together over one familiar-looking building or sign. Similar streets and landmarks can be misleading.
Bellingcat’s video guide demonstrates cross-checking street details against maps and Street View. A location match establishes, at most, that the imagery is consistent with that place; it does not establish when the recording was made or which event it depicts.
Check the date and event separately
Look for earlier uploads and compare the recording with independent reporting or other media from the claimed event. Weather, lighting, shadows, seasonal details and the event’s chronology can help test whether the proposed date makes sense. Treat these as clues to compare, not as a clock: lighting or weather alone rarely establishes a date.

Keep place and time as separate findings. Bellingcat notes that footage from the correct area can still show a different incident, and distinguishes checks on where a video was made from checks on when it was made.
Review the full context, not just a frame
Watch the complete clip and listen to its audio. Read visible signs and captions, note cuts or overlays, and compare other angles or footage of the same scene when available. Ask whether the details actually support the post’s explanation, and whether the source might have a reason to misrepresent them.

Protest footage can be repurposed or manipulated. Bellingcat’s guide recommends combining searches with source and context checks; no single visual clue, tool result or plausible uploader establishes the full story.

Record what is known—and what remains uncertain
Assess the evidence on separate axes instead of assigning one overall “real” or “fake” label:
- Source and provenance: Who posted the media, and is there evidence they or an identified filmer recorded it?
- Prior circulation: Does it appear in earlier posts or in a different context?
- Location: Do several independent visual details fit the claimed place?
- Date and chronology: Does the timing fit the available clues and independent accounts?
- Fit with the claim: Do the full video, audio and visible details support the caption’s explanation?
- Potential harm: Could redistribution expose someone shown in the media?
If a material claim remains unsupported, say the footage is unverified rather than implying that a failed search proves originality. Bellingcat’s advice is direct: “There is no silver bullet to verify every video.” Its guidance also recognizes that a binary conclusion is not always possible.
Consider safety before resharing
Even accurately identified footage can create risks for people in it. Before sharing, consider whether faces, identifying details or location information could expose protesters or other vulnerable people. Bellingcat’s editorial standards and practices tell researchers to consider consequences for vulnerable people identifiable in images and videos. If the public-interest value does not justify the exposure, do not amplify the identifying material; where appropriate, share a version that obscures it.
