To check a Steam game’s installed files, open Library, select the game’s Properties, go to Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. Steam checks the installation and replaces or repairs files when needed. A notice that some files failed verification is not always a problem: Steam says this is normal for most games because those files may be local configuration files.
Verify a game’s installed files in Steam
- Restart your computer, then launch Steam.
- Open Library. Right-click the affected game and choose Properties. You can also open the game’s Library page and select its settings there.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and let Steam complete the check. It may take several minutes.
Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files support guide recommends avoiding other intensive work, such as a virus scan or defragmentation, while verification runs. Verify one game at a time rather than starting checks for several games simultaneously.
Understand the verification result
Verification checks whether the game’s installed files are correct and can fix files when necessary. If Steam reports that one or more files failed to verify, that does not automatically mean the repair failed. Steam Support says, “This is normal for most Steam games.” The files may be local configuration files that Steam should not replace, and Steam says this message can safely be ignored.
If the game still has the original problem after verification, move on to the step that matches the likely cause. Verification checks installed game files; it does not by itself refresh Steam’s download cache, repair library-folder permissions, or test a different content-server region.

Choose the next troubleshooting step

Steam’s broader Update & Installation Issues sequence is to restart the computer, clear the download cache, repair the library folder, verify local files, and try another download region. These steps address different parts of the download and installation process, so choose based on the symptom rather than treating them as alternate names for the same repair.
Check for causes outside the game installation
If corruption or installation failures keep returning, Steam lists bad hardware, software crashes, and power surges as possible causes. Its broader troubleshooting guidance also points to overclocking, connection problems, storage errors, and memory errors. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis: repeated errors alone do not prove that a drive is failing. Steam advises contacting technical support to investigate hard-drive issues.
For a missing-executable error, a file may have been blocked by another program, corrupted, or not downloaded successfully. Check whether antivirus software quarantined or interfered with the file before repeating verification. If the official steps do not resolve the issue, Steam recommends submitting a support ticket with an uncropped screenshot of the error and a system report.
