First confirm that your bank is an FDIC-insured institution, then total every deposit held there by ownership category. The standard protection is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category, including principal and interest accrued through the failure date. If the bank is acquired, insured deposits usually transfer to the acquiring institution, but interest rates, fees and account terms can change. A six-month minimum merger grace period can keep qualifying acquired deposits separately insured, giving you time to reorganize funds before coverage is combined.
Verify the bank before you calculate coverage
Deposit insurance applies because of the legal institution holding the deposit, not simply because of a familiar brand name, branch sign or banking app. Start with the FDIC BankFind tool and search the institution where your account is actually booked.
Record the institution’s legal identity
- Search the bank in FDIC BankFind.
- Save the exact legal name shown in the result, along with its charter information, operating status and regulator contact details.
- Check every bank or brand you use separately. Two names can belong to the same insured institution, while similar names can represent different institutions.
- Keep a copy of the result with your account records so you can identify the correct institution if ownership changes later.
FDIC insurance is automatic for qualifying deposit accounts at an FDIC-insured bank; customers do not buy a separate policy or submit an enrollment form.
Make a complete deposit inventory
List each account at that legal institution. Include the current balance, accrued interest, account owner, beneficiary designations and ownership category. Include deposits held through a fiduciary arrangement or broker when supporting records may be needed to establish who owns the funds.

Use the balance that could be present at a failure, not just the amount you remember depositing. Interest that has accrued by the failure date counts toward the same insurance limit as principal.
Run the inventory through EDIE
The FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) aggregates accounts at the same FDIC-insured bank by ownership category. Enter each account separately, then review the totals for every category. Do not treat different trade names as separate insurance institutions until BankFind confirms that they are legally separate.
Save or print the completed estimate and update it when you open, close, retitle or add a beneficiary to an account. A current inventory is especially useful if a bank is closed suddenly and the FDIC must determine how much is insured.

Understand the $250,000 limit
The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. The limit applies to the combined balance of all deposits that share the same depositor and category at that one insured institution. Principal and interest accrued through the failure date are included.
Why ownership category matters
Accounts are grouped according to how ownership is legally recorded. A change in the owner, co-owners or qualifying beneficiary arrangement can place deposits in a different category, while merely using a different account number or branch does not. Trust, fiduciary and beneficiary records may be required to establish the category, so keep the governing documents and current account registration together.

EDIE is designed to perform this aggregation. If your balances approach the limit, verify the result with the bank’s deposit-insurance personnel or the FDIC rather than relying on an informal explanation from a branch employee.
What is covered and what is not
| Product held at an FDIC-insured bank | FDIC treatment |
|---|---|
| Checking account | Covered deposit product, subject to the applicable ownership-category limit |
| Savings account | Covered deposit product, subject to the applicable ownership-category limit |
| Money-market deposit account | Covered deposit product, subject to the applicable ownership-category limit |
| Certificate of deposit (CD) | Covered deposit product, with merger-grace and maturity rules that can affect separate coverage |
| Non-deposit investment sold by a bank | Not covered by FDIC insurance merely because the bank marketed or sold it |
Stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other non-deposit investments do not become FDIC-insured products because they were purchased through a bank. Confirm whether an account is a deposit account before counting it in EDIE.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the insurance promise means
FDIC consumer guidance says that, since 1934, no depositor has lost a penny of FDIC-insured funds. That protection still stops at the applicable limit; an uninsured balance is handled under the resolution terms for the failed institution and is not guaranteed in the same way.
What normally happens when a bank is acquired
Most bank failures are resolved through a purchase-and-assumption transaction. A healthy acquiring bank takes over the failed bank’s deposits and selected assets, and insured depositors become customers of the acquiring institution. Access to insured funds generally continues, often with little or no interruption at the branch or online channel.
Access usually continues, but the contract can change
The acquiring institution is not required to preserve the failed bank’s interest rates, fee schedule or account-agreement terms. Read the notice sent by the new bank for rate changes, fees, minimum-balance rules, check acceptance, online-banking instructions and any new routing or account numbers.

The six-month merger grace period
When deposits from one insured bank are acquired by another insured bank, the acquired deposits are separately insured from deposits you already held at the acquiring bank for at least six months after the merger. This temporary separation can protect funds that would otherwise be combined over the $250,000 limit.
The grace period is time to make a deliberate decision, not a permanent expansion of coverage. During it, calculate the combined balances at the acquiring institution and decide whether to change ownership categories, move excess funds or accept the new bank’s terms. Keep the merger date and the grace-period end date in your records.
Special handling for CDs
CDs have maturity-specific rules. Record the original maturity date, any renewal date, the interest rate, early-withdrawal provisions and the date on which the merger grace period ends. A CD that renews automatically after the grace period can lose the separate treatment that applied to the acquired deposit, so review renewal instructions before the first relevant maturity.
Ask the acquiring bank how it will treat a CD that matures during the grace period and what happens if you take no action. Obtain the answer in writing and keep it with the CD confirmation.

Keep payroll, benefits and bills moving
When deposits are assumed
In a purchase-and-assumption transaction, direct deposits are generally redirected to the acquiring bank, and checks often continue to process. Even so, read the official transition notice and verify your first payroll, benefit payment and recurring withdrawal after the change.
- Check that the account number and routing number shown in your new online profile match the instructions for incoming deposits.
- Confirm the first salary, pension, government benefit or other direct deposit after conversion.
- Review automatic payments for utilities, loans, subscriptions and taxes; update the payee if the acquiring bank gives you new details.
- Keep enough available cash to cover transactions during the conversion and watch for duplicate or rejected entries.
When there is no acquirer: a deposit payoff
If no bank assumes the deposits, the FDIC conducts a deposit payoff. Each depositor is paid up to the insured balance. The FDIC states a goal of completing payments within two business days, although accounts requiring supplemental documentation can take longer.
Transactions presented after the bank closes can be returned unpaid in a payoff. Contact employers, benefit administrators and creditors promptly, follow the FDIC’s instructions, and monitor outstanding checks and automatic payments until replacement arrangements are confirmed.
Interest during a failure
FDIC insurance includes principal and interest through the failure date, up to the applicable limit. Interest stops accruing at failure. If an acquiring bank takes over the deposit, that bank sets the post-failure interest rate and is responsible for the terms going forward.
A practical protection workflow
- Identify the insured institution. Use BankFind to verify the legal name, charter information, operating status and regulator contact.
- Inventory every deposit. Record balances, accrued interest, owners, beneficiaries, ownership categories and the location of fiduciary or broker records.
- Separate deposits from investments. Count only checking, savings, money-market deposit accounts, CDs and other qualifying deposits; exclude non-deposit investments.
- Calculate totals in EDIE. Aggregate all accounts at the same legal insured bank within each ownership category.
- Document the result. Keep statements, deposit contracts, beneficiary or trust documents and the EDIE output. Complete records can speed an insurance determination.
- Read acquisition notices immediately. Note the merger date, new routing or account numbers, online-access steps, rate and fee changes, check rules and automatic-payment instructions.
- Recalculate during the grace period. Combine pre-existing and acquired deposits at the new institution, paying particular attention to CDs approaching maturity.
- Choose a coverage strategy. If a category exceeds its limit after the grace period, consider an eligible ownership change or moving the excess to another FDIC-insured bank after checking tax, liquidity and contractual consequences.
- Verify operations. Confirm incoming deposits and outgoing payments, and retain evidence of any corrected routing or account information.
How to decide whether to stay or move funds
There is no automatic requirement to close an account after an acquisition. Make the decision using the new institution’s legal identity, insurance calculation and operating terms rather than fear of the merger itself.

Compare the same seven factors
- Total deposits at one legal institution: Include every account and accrued interest that will be combined after the grace period.
- Ownership category and beneficiaries: Check whether registrations and beneficiary designations still match your intended ownership.
- Amount above the limit: Identify the exact balance that would be uninsured once acquired deposits and existing deposits are combined.
- CD maturity and renewal: Decide before an automatic renewal changes the treatment or locks funds under new terms.
- New rate and fees: Compare the acquiring bank’s current disclosure with the former account’s rate, maintenance charges and minimums.
- Payment continuity: Confirm that payroll, benefits, checks and automatic payments work through the transition.
- Documentation burden: Make sure trust, fiduciary or brokered-deposit records are complete if the bank or FDIC requests proof.
Moving money solely to create the appearance of multiple accounts does not create additional coverage if the accounts remain at the same legal insured bank or ownership category. A genuine change should be documented and should fit your financial and legal objectives.
Resolution outcomes at a glance
| Resolution path | Access to funds | Terms and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Healthy-bank purchase and assumption | Insured deposits transfer to the acquiring bank; customers generally retain access | Rates and account terms may change; acquired deposits receive separate insurance from pre-existing deposits for at least six months |
| Deposit payoff with no acquirer | FDIC pays each depositor up to the insured balance | FDIC goal is payment within two business days, but supplemental documentation can delay individual cases; post-closing checks or payment requests can be returned |
If a credit union is the acquiring institution
A federally insured credit union may assume bank deposits under an approved purchase-and-assumption transaction. When a notice identifies a credit union as the acquirer, check the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and the transaction-specific instructions to understand the new institution, insurance framework and account-conversion steps. Do not infer the details from a generic bank-merger notice.
Records that protect you during an insurance determination
Keep recent statements for every account, deposit contracts, CD confirmations, beneficiary designations, trust instruments, fiduciary statements and broker records that identify the beneficial owner. Store acquisition notices and correspondence showing when you received instructions about routing numbers, account conversion or maturity elections.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Documentation matters most when ownership is not obvious from the account title. If the FDIC or acquiring institution asks for supplemental evidence, provide complete, consistent records rather than relying on a verbal explanation. Missing documentation can delay payment even when the underlying funds are ultimately insured.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting brands instead of banks: Separate logos or websites do not prove separate insurance institutions; verify the legal entity in BankFind.
- Ignoring accrued interest: Interest through the failure date uses part of the $250,000 limit.
- Assuming investments are deposits: A product sold at a bank is not automatically FDIC-insured.
- Waiting past the merger grace period: Acquired deposits can combine with pre-existing deposits after at least six months.
- Letting a CD renew unattended: Renewal timing can affect separate-insurance treatment and the available withdrawal decision.
- Trusting old rates and terms: The acquiring institution may reset rates, fees and account conditions.
- Failing to test payments: Direct deposits are generally redirected in an assumption, but a payoff can return checks and payment requests.
- Losing ownership records: Beneficiary, trust, fiduciary and broker documentation can affect how quickly coverage is determined.
Questions to answer when the notice arrives
Before taking action, write down the merger or closing date, the acquiring institution’s legal name, the date the six-month period ends, your combined balance by ownership category, each CD’s next maturity, any new routing or account number, and the status of your first incoming and outgoing transactions. Those details turn a general announcement into a concrete coverage and cash-flow plan.
