Before you tap Confirm, independently match the recipient address, network, amount, token, fee, dapp or contract, and timestamp with what you intended. After signing, copy the transaction hash and check it in the block explorer for that exact network. Treat wallet warnings as stop signs, never disclose a Secret Recovery Phrase or private key, and assume a confirmed blockchain transfer cannot be reversed.

This process works for MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and other mobile wallets. Labels differ between apps, but the security decisions are the same: verify the destination and action on a trusted screen, then investigate any unexpected activity without using links supplied by a suspicious message.

What to verify before approving a mobile-wallet transaction

A transaction can look familiar while sending funds to a different address, token contract, or network. Read the complete confirmation screen rather than relying on a shortened address, a familiar logo, or a notification that says the transaction is urgent.

Check What to compare Why it matters
Recipient Full destination address, including the first and last characters, against the address you obtained independently A single changed character can send assets to an attacker. A contact name or website label is not proof of the underlying address.
Network The chain selected in the wallet and the chain your recipient supports The same-looking address format can exist on several networks. Sending on the wrong chain can make recovery difficult or impossible.
Asset and amount Token name, contract when shown, decimal amount, and fiat estimate Scam tokens can copy a legitimate name and logo. Check the contract and the unit, not just the symbol.
Fee Network fee, priority setting, and total debit An unusually high fee may indicate a congested network, an incorrect chain, or a malicious contract request.
Dapp or contract action The site you opened, contract address, and wording such as approve, permit, swap, stake, or set approval A signature can authorize later spending without immediately transferring funds. Know exactly what permission you are granting.
Time Date and time shown by the wallet and your own activity An unexpected time can reveal an account compromise or a notification that does not belong to you.

MetaMask specifically recommends checking the date and time, recipient address, dapp, and value when deciding whether an activity is yours. Matching details make a transaction more likely to be legitimate, but they do not replace checking the site and contract through an official channel.

Step-by-step: verify a transfer before you sign

  1. Pause the request. Do not approve a pop-up simply because a page says your session will expire. Close other tabs and open the wallet from its own app icon.
  2. Identify the action. Read whether the request is a send, token approval, permit, swap, bridge, staking action, or a plain message signature. A message signature can still have consequences if a service uses it to authorize an action.
  3. Confirm the active account. Check the account name and address in the wallet. If you manage several accounts, switch only after confirming which one holds the intended funds.
  4. Check the network. Compare the network label in the wallet with the recipient’s instructions obtained from a known-good channel. Do not rely on a logo or color alone.
  5. Expand the recipient address. Compare the complete address with an address saved previously or supplied through an independently verified channel. Use copy and paste rather than retyping, then compare the first and last several characters on the confirmation screen. Clipboard-replacing malware is a reason to perform this visual check every time.
  6. Validate the asset and quantity. Confirm the exact token contract when the wallet displays it, the number of units, and whether the amount is gross or net of fees. A token with a familiar ticker can be counterfeit.
  7. Review the fee and total. Make sure the available balance after the fee is what you expect. Stop if the fee or total is dramatically different from the quote you received.
  8. Inspect the dapp and contract. If the request came from a website, compare its domain character by character with the project’s official domain. For an approval or permit, identify the spender address and the allowance amount; an unlimited allowance is a high-risk choice when a smaller amount will work.
  9. Verify outside the wallet. Navigate to the project’s official site by typing a known address or using a bookmark you created earlier. Use its documented contract address, support page, or verified social account to compare the dapp and contract. Never use the link or phone number in an unsolicited message.
  10. Sign only when every field matches. If one detail is unexplained, reject the request and investigate. A failed or rejected request is safer than an irreversible transfer.

Safer address checks

  • For a new recipient, send a small test amount only when the recipient and network are independently verified and the cost is acceptable. A successful test does not prove that a later address copied from a message is genuine.
  • Ask a known recipient to confirm the address through a second channel. Do not treat an address sent in the same chat as independent confirmation.
  • Use the wallet’s address book only after you have verified how the entry was created. Attackers can persuade users to save a bad address under a trusted label.
  • Never approve a request to “verify” an address by sending crypto to a new wallet. Coinbase identifies giveaway requests framed as address verification as scams.

How to check the transaction after signing

Signing tells the network to process a request; it does not tell you that the transaction succeeded or that the destination was correct. Copy the transaction ID, also called a transaction hash, from the wallet’s activity or confirmation screen.

  1. Open the block explorer for the network that the wallet used. Selecting an explorer for another chain can show no result or misleading information.
  2. Paste the hash into the explorer’s search field. Check the status, block time, sender, recipient, token transfer, amount, fee, and any contract interaction.
  3. Compare the explorer’s records with your intended transaction. For a token transfer, open the token-transfer details rather than relying only on the native-coin value.
  4. Save the hash and a screenshot with the date and time. These records help an exchange or wallet support team investigate, although they cannot reverse a confirmed transfer.

A pending transaction can remain in the mempool while the network processes it. Do not send a second payment merely because a recipient says the first one failed; first check the hash and the wallet’s nonce or replacement options. If the explorer shows a confirmed transfer to an address you did not authorize, treat it as a security incident rather than a display problem.

Interpreting MetaMask and other wallet security warnings

A warning is a decision aid, not a guarantee that an activity is safe or unsafe. MetaMask’s guidance is direct: If you see a ‘Warning’: Double-check the URL or contract address. If the wallet labels a site or request Malicious, MetaMask says: Do not connect your wallet; Do not sign transactions; Close the site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow that instruction even when the page uses a familiar brand, promises a reward, or claims that your account will be frozen. Open the project through an independently known official domain and compare the contract address there. Do not remove a warning merely because a token lacks a “Verified” badge: MetaMask says that missing badge is not proof of danger, and a badge is not an endorsement.

What a warning can and cannot tell you

  • It can flag a known malicious domain, suspicious contract, or pattern associated with scams.
  • It cannot guarantee that an unflagged site is legitimate; new phishing domains may not yet be classified.
  • It cannot tell you that a transaction is appropriate for your goals. You still need to read the recipient, amount, network, fee, and permission.
  • It does not make support staff entitled to your recovery phrase, password, private key, or two-step code.

Recognizing a mobile-wallet phishing attempt

Phishing usually tries to make you act before you verify. The message may claim that a withdrawal is blocked, a wallet must be revalidated, a giveaway is waiting, or a security incident requires an immediate call. The Federal Trade Commission warns that most unexpected messages telling you to act quickly, click a link, or call a number are phishing scams.

Common signals

  • Urgency and threats: deadlines, account closure, tax penalties, or a claim that funds will disappear if you wait.
  • Unexpected links or QR codes: a message directs you to connect a wallet, “synchronize” it, or enter a recovery phrase.
  • Impersonated support: a person contacts you first, asks for screen sharing or remote access, or requests that you install software.
  • Giveaways and refunds: you are told to send crypto first, pay a fee, or prove ownership by transferring to a new address.
  • Look-alike domains: altered spelling, extra words, unusual top-level domains, or a link that resolves somewhere different from its visible text.
  • Unsolicited tokens: a tiny deposit appears with a note or a link inviting you to claim or swap it.

What legitimate support will not request

Coinbase says its staff will not ask for your password, two-step verification code, private key, Secret Recovery Phrase, remote access, software installation, or a transfer to an external address. Its warning is unambiguous: No one will ever ask for your password, 2FA codes, or for you to transfer assets to a specific or new address, account, vault, or wallet. MetaMask likewise says it does not routinely request a Secret Recovery Phrase.

Install a wallet only from the developer’s official domain or the official mobile-app-store listing. Check the publisher name, download history, and spelling before installing. A genuine-looking app downloaded from an advertisement or an attached file can still be counterfeit.

Dusting attacks and unsolicited tokens

Do not interact with an unexpected token or tiny deposit merely because it appears in your balance. Coinbase describes dusting attacks in which very small deposits help identify wallet owners and lure them to a malicious site. The token may have a tempting name, a claim link in its transfer data, or a website that asks you to connect and sign.

  • Leave the asset untouched; do not approve, swap, claim, or visit a link embedded in its description.
  • Hide or watch-list the token in the wallet if that feature is available.
  • Record the transaction hash if you need to report it.
  • Continue using the wallet only for transactions you initiate from trusted sources. Receiving dust alone does not give the sender control of your wallet; signing a malicious request is the dangerous step.

What to do if you clicked a phishing link or signed something suspicious

Speed matters, but panic causes additional mistakes. Separate a click, a connection, a signature, and a confirmed transfer: each requires a different response.

If you only opened the page

  1. Close the tab and do not download anything or enter credentials.
  2. Update the phone’s operating system, browser, and wallet from their official stores.
  3. Review wallet activity and connected sites. Disconnect the suspicious site from the wallet’s connection settings.
  4. Change an exposed website password from a clean device and enable two-step authentication where available. Never reuse a wallet recovery phrase as a password.

If you connected the wallet but did not sign

  1. Disconnect the site immediately and revoke any permissions you do not recognize using the wallet’s official controls or a trusted allowance-management tool.
  2. Check for pending signature or approval requests and reject them.
  3. Inspect recent transactions in the correct block explorers and save the hashes.
  4. Move funds only after you understand whether an approval or other permission was granted. If you suspect the seed phrase or private key was exposed, treat the wallet as compromised and follow the migration procedure below.

If you signed an approval, permit, or contract action

Assume the spender may be able to use that permission. Stop further signing, disconnect the dapp, and revoke the allowance or authorization from a trusted interface. Then review token transfers and contract calls in the explorer. A signature that did not immediately move funds can still enable a later transfer.

If an unauthorized transfer is confirmed

  1. Stop signing and disconnect every suspicious site.
  2. Record the transaction hash, wallet address, destination address, URL, screenshots, and exact times.
  3. Contact the exchange or wallet provider only through an official website or app that you reached independently. Do not reply to the original message or use its phone number.
  4. If funds went through an exchange, ask whether it can flag or freeze the receiving account; success is not guaranteed.
  5. Report the incident to the relevant law-enforcement or consumer-protection service in your jurisdiction. Include hashes and addresses, not your recovery phrase.

Confirmed blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed or stopped. Recovery is uncertain, and anyone promising guaranteed recovery in exchange for an upfront fee is likely running a second scam.

How to migrate funds from a compromised wallet

If a Secret Recovery Phrase or private key was exposed, assume the account is permanently compromised even if no funds have moved. MetaMask advises creating a new wallet on a separate device or browser profile, recording a new recovery phrase offline, moving remaining funds if it is safe, and abandoning the compromised account.

  1. Use a clean device or a separate browser profile with current security updates.
  2. Install the wallet from its official source and create a new wallet. Write the new recovery phrase on paper or another offline medium; do not photograph, email, cloud-sync, or paste it into a website.
  3. Verify the new receiving address on the clean device.
  4. From the old wallet, move assets in priority order while watching fees and pending transactions. Do not add more funds to pay a fee if an attacker may be monitoring the account.
  5. After the move, revoke approvals associated with the old account where possible and stop using it. Keep the old address only for evidence and monitoring.

Never reveal either recovery phrase to support, a recovery service, or a person claiming to help. Anyone who has it can control the wallet.

When a hardware wallet is worth considering

A hardware wallet is an optional control for larger balances or long-term holdings. Ledger’s official Nano S Plus information describes offline key storage, a secure element, and a trusted display intended to let the owner approve transactions. The page lists Android and desktop compatibility and says the device is not compatible with iOS.

Decision factor What to look for Trade-off
Clear signing The device displays the exact recipient, amount, network, and contract action More verification time, but a phone malware infection is less likely to alter what you see on the device.
Compatibility Your phone or computer operating system and the connection method supported by the model Convenience varies; a device that cannot connect to your phone may require a desktop.
Recovery phrase control Initialization that lets you create and store the phrase offline Loss or disclosure of the phrase remains your responsibility; the manufacturer cannot replace it.
Authenticity Purchase from Ledger or an authorized seller and install the official companion application Extra cost and setup, but a counterfeit device or fake app defeats the security model.
Value protected Balance and transaction frequency justify the cost and added steps More security can mean less convenience for small, frequent payments.

Before sending a large amount, initialize the device yourself, verify its recovery process, and compare the recipient on the device’s trusted display. A hardware wallet protects keys; it does not make a malicious contract safe or prevent you from approving the wrong address.

A practical mobile-wallet security routine

  • Keep the wallet app, operating system, and browser updated from official stores.
  • Use a device lock and a unique wallet password; do not store the recovery phrase in a password manager or cloud note unless you have deliberately assessed that risk.
  • Bookmark official project domains and type support addresses yourself.
  • Review connected sites and token approvals periodically, removing permissions you no longer need.
  • Use a separate wallet for experimental dapps and keep long-term funds elsewhere.
  • Set a personal rule that no message can create an emergency: stop, open the official app, and verify independently.
  • Keep transaction hashes, dates, and recipient details for significant transfers.

Cryptocurrency-ATM scams illustrate the scale of the wider problem: a 2026 Commodity Futures Trading Commission advisory, citing the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, reported more than $388 million in crypto-ATM scam losses during 2025. That figure concerns crypto-ATM scams, not all mobile-wallet phishing or total cryptocurrency losses, but it reinforces why an urgent request deserves independent verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I trust a transaction because the wallet shows a familiar token logo?

No. Logos and ticker symbols can be copied. Check the token contract, network, amount, recipient and the transaction record in the correct block explorer.

What if my transaction is still pending?

Open the hash in the correct network explorer and check its status before doing anything else. Do not send a duplicate payment; use the wallet’s documented replacement or fee controls only after confirming the nonce and destination.

Is receiving an unsolicited token enough to compromise my wallet?

Receiving dust does not by itself grant the sender control. The danger is visiting its link or signing an approval, permit, claim or contract request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a wallet provider recover crypto sent to a scam address?

Confirmed blockchain transfers are generally irreversible. A provider or exchange may be able to flag a receiving account, but recovery is uncertain; provide hashes and evidence through an independently verified official channel.
