Before paying for a used iPhone, check the seller’s return terms, make sure the phone is no longer linked to its previous owner, inspect its service and battery records, and look up Apple’s coverage using the serial number. These checks help you assess a phone, but no single Apple lookup certifies that it is genuine, problem-free, or covered in every circumstance.
Start with the seller and the return policy
For an online purchase, read the return window, the reasons returns are accepted, and how a return is handled. Ask whether the phone is certified pre-owned and what that certification checks. Get clear answers about physical damage, battery condition, repair history, and what happens if the phone arrives locked or differs from its description. Apple recommends checking seller reliability and understanding return terms before buying a pre-owned iPhone (Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance).
Keep the seller’s answers and listing description. They give you a basis for comparing the delivered phone with what was promised and using any return recourse if something does not match.
Match the serial number and check Apple coverage
- Ask the seller to show the serial number in Settings > General > About.
- Compare it with the serial number on the device or original documentation, if available. Avoid sharing the serial number publicly or unnecessarily.
- Enter the serial number in Apple’s coverage lookup. Compare the displayed coverage status and estimated purchase date with the seller’s claims.
- If the date or coverage record conflicts with the seller’s statement, ask for the original proof of purchase and clarify the discrepancy before paying.
A serial-number lookup reports Apple’s coverage information; it is not proof by itself that the handset is genuine or free of fraud. Apple says the estimated purchase date can be wrong and may require an original receipt to correct. Recently submitted information and repair-service coverage may not appear immediately. Apple also notes that its system may not include all consumer-law rights or additional programs; applicable protections depend on where and how you buy (Apple’s explanation of warranty coverage).

Make sure Activation Lock is off
Do not take ownership of a phone that is still linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account. Apple’s direct guidance is: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If setup displays “iPhone Locked to Owner” or asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account credentials, ask the seller to remove the device from their account before proceeding. Do not rely on a promise to remove it later.
Apple says a device showing the Hello setup screen is ready for a new owner. Ask to see the phone erased and at that screen before completing the purchase. Apple explains the owner-removal steps in its Activation Lock guidance.

Review Parts and Service History
If you can access the phone’s settings, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. On iOS 15.2 or later, the section appears when a supported repair is recorded; what is shown depends on the model and software. Apple documents these labels:
- Genuine: the repair used genuine Apple parts and processes.
- Unknown: the part may be non-genuine or may not be functioning as expected.
- Unverified: the logic board was previously replaced; Apple says this may affect features such as Apple Pay.
- Used: a part was previously used or installed in another iPhone.
Use the history as evidence, not as a complete lifetime repair record. If a part has been serviced more than once, only its most recent service may appear. A missing section or entry does not prove the phone has never been repaired. Apple describes the feature and its limits in its Parts and Service History documentation.

Check battery condition and test the phone
Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance points buyers to battery health. For iPhone 6 and later running iOS 11.3 or later, battery health can be shown in Settings. On newer software, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Review maximum capacity and any battery messages, then test the phone in person where possible.
Apple does not set one maximum-capacity percentage that every buyer should accept. Consider the reading alongside the asking price, your expected use, and the cost of a possible battery replacement. Battery status describes condition; it does not establish authenticity.

Compare listings on evidence, not one badge
When deciding between phones, compare the factors that affect both risk and value:
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Seller and recourse | Reliability, written description, return window, accepted reasons, and return process. |
| Coverage record | Apple’s displayed status and estimated purchase date, supported by the receipt if the record conflicts with the seller’s claim. |
| Ownership status | Activation Lock removed and the phone ready at the Hello setup screen. |
| Repair evidence | Parts and Service History labels, while allowing for model, software, and record limitations. |
| Condition and price | Battery health, physical condition, asking price, and any likely repair or replacement cost. |
Treat a listing as a poor risk if the seller will not let you verify the phone, the device remains linked to someone else’s account, or the seller’s claims cannot be reconciled with the records and condition you can inspect. A coverage result or parts label is only one piece of the decision.
