Use Flipkart’s Open Box Delivery inspection before you accept the parcel, then match the iPhone’s identifiers and check coverage in Apple’s own systems. A serial number that Apple recognises is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove the phone is unused, that the marketplace listing was authorised, or that every fault will be covered. Verify the hardware, software, invoice and coverage dates together, and keep a record of each check.
What you can prove—and what you cannot
There is no single test that establishes authenticity, previous activation and warranty eligibility at once. A reliable decision combines four kinds of evidence:
- Physical inspection: the model, colour, storage, condition, packaging and accessories match the order.
- Identifier matching: the serial number and IMEI agree across the phone, box and tax invoice.
- Apple records: Apple recognises the serial number and shows a sensible purchase date, coverage end date and AppleCare status.
- Repair history: the iPhone does not show unexpected replacement parts on its Parts and Service History screen.
A matching box label is not enough. Boxes can be separated from devices, and a recognised serial number does not establish that a handset was never activated or that a particular seller is authorised by Apple. Coverage and service options also vary by country, device and date.
Before delivery: preserve your evidence
Save the order and seller details
Take screenshots or save copies of the order page showing the seller name, exact iPhone model, colour, storage, price, promised manufacturer warranty and any replacement or return language. Keep the order number and delivery estimate. Flipkart says replacement guarantees vary by seller policy and product category, so the conditions displayed for your order matter more than a general statement about phones.

Confirm whether Open Box Delivery is offered
Eligible mobile orders may show Flipkart Open Box Delivery. Under that service, you can open and inspect the shipment before accepting it. An unsatisfactory item can be rejected at the door, but Flipkart’s guidance says returns for Open Box orders are generally limited to manufacturing defects. That makes the doorstep inspection your best opportunity to identify a wrong, damaged, incomplete or visibly handled phone.
Have a practical inspection kit ready
- Your order page on a charged phone or another device.
- A camera for photographs or video.
- The ability to connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or mobile data if activation checks are needed.
- A note containing the expected model, colour and storage.
Do not hand over the delivery OTP until you have completed the inspection when Open Box Delivery is available. Delivery procedures can vary, so follow the instructions shown for your order while making clear that you need the permitted inspection first.
Open Box Delivery: the doorstep procedure
- Ask for the inspection before acceptance. Tell the delivery agent you will check the eligible mobile under Open Box Delivery before confirming receipt or sharing the OTP.
- Photograph the unopened parcel. Capture the shipping label and all sides of the package before seals are broken. This preserves a record of its condition.
- Check the retail box. Look for a crushed corner, puncture, torn film, a re-sealed edge, mismatched labels or other signs of tampering. Packaging evidence alone does not prove fraud, but it is relevant if the contents are wrong or damaged.
- Match the ordered configuration. Confirm the iPhone family and model, colour and storage capacity against the order page. Do not rely only on the size or appearance of the handset; model variants can look similar.
- Inspect the phone and accessories. Look for dents, scratches, display damage, bent edges, camera-lens marks and signs that the handset was previously handled. Check that the accessories promised in the listing are present and that nothing is missing.
- Record identifiers. Photograph the serial number and IMEI printed on the box label and the number shown on the tax invoice. Avoid posting these identifiers publicly; they are useful for support but should be kept with your purchase records.
- Compare the phone to the box. After opening, find the serial number and IMEI on the iPhone and compare them with both the box and invoice. A mismatch is a reason to pause acceptance and raise a Flipkart issue rather than assume the box belongs to the phone.
- Document any problem before leaving. Photograph the defect, missing item or mismatch and ask the delivery agent to record the issue. Use Flipkart’s order support or the applicable return or replacement flow immediately.
- Accept only after the checks pass. If the item is correct, complete and undamaged, confirm receipt according to the delivery instructions and retain the photographs.
If Open Box Delivery is not offered, you may not have the same right to inspect before acceptance. In that case, record the unboxing continuously if practical, keep all packaging and report a problem through the order’s stated support process as soon as it is found.

Where to find the identifiers
Use the number printed on the box and invoice as your first reference. Once the phone is available, the serial number and IMEI can be viewed from the iPhone’s setup information or in Settings > General > About. Depending on the model and setup state, the information may also be available from the device’s initial information screen.
Use a three-way comparison

All available identifiers should agree. If the invoice omits an IMEI, compare every field it does provide and keep the invoice; do not invent a missing value. A discrepancy can indicate a packing or invoicing error, a swapped device or a more serious authenticity problem. Do not treat a matching box and phone as proof that the marketplace listing was authorised or that the handset is unused.

Check Apple coverage and the purchase date
Use Apple’s Check Coverage service
Enter the iPhone’s serial number—not a number copied only from the box—into Apple’s official Check Coverage service. Apple describes that service as the place to view device coverage and benefits. Save a screenshot of the result showing the device and coverage information, subject to any personal-data masking you need.
Confirm coverage on the iPhone
On the device, open Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty. Review the plan name, coverage status and expiry information shown there. You can also sign in to Apple’s My Support area to view coverage information associated with your devices.

Check the purchase date, the coverage end date and whether an AppleCare plan is listed. If the purchase date is substantially earlier than your Flipkart purchase, or coverage has already expired, stop and investigate before treating the phone as a new, fully covered unit. Coverage status can be affected by device and region, so Apple Support may need to confirm the record.
If Apple recognises the serial number but the purchase date is wrong or coverage is missing, contact Apple Support with the serial number and the original Flipkart tax invoice. Ask whether the date can be corrected and which proof is required; do not assume Apple will change it. Keep the order details, invoice and screenshots together.
Inspect Parts and Service History
On an iPhone running iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Apple uses labels that can include Genuine, Unknown, Unverified and Used.

The menu is a history check, not a counterfeit detector. A phone can have no listed repair and still require identifier, physical and coverage verification. Conversely, an unexpected history label on a phone advertised as new is a material reason to seek clarification before the seller’s return conditions become harder to use.

How to interpret Apple warranty evidence
What a recognised serial number tells you
Apple’s system recognising a serial number indicates that the identifier exists in Apple’s records. It does not establish that the Flipkart listing was authorised, that the phone was never activated, that the device is free of non-warranty damage or that every defect qualifies for service.
What the invoice contributes
The Flipkart tax invoice ties the device and transaction to a date, seller and order. Apple may ask for proof of purchase when coverage dates or eligibility need to be verified. Keep the original electronic invoice rather than relying on a screenshot alone, and preserve it even after the first successful Apple check.
Where repairs are covered
For warranty or AppleCare service, use Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Apple states: “Only repairs performed directly by Apple or by an Apple Authorised Service Provider are covered by Apple’s Limited Warranty and AppleCare plans.” A third-party repair can affect later coverage, so confirm the service provider before authorising work.
Choosing between Flipkart and Apple when something is wrong
Use Flipkart for delivery, listing and seller problems
Contact Flipkart through the order’s support or return process when the shipment is damaged, incomplete, the wrong model or colour, has the wrong storage, contains a device whose identifiers do not match, or otherwise fails the listing. Ask for the delivery issue to be recorded and retain photos, the invoice, the order page and the seller’s response.

Flipkart’s seller terms state that sellers are responsible for authenticity or genuineness and for applicable warranty, refund, return, replacement and exchange benefits. The exact remedy still depends on the order, seller, product category, location and the terms displayed for that purchase.
Use Apple for Apple coverage and authorised repair
If the phone appears physically correct and genuine but Apple shows a missing or incorrect purchase date, contact Apple Support with the invoice and serial number. For a suspected warranty defect, Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider is the appropriate service route. A coverage result is not a substitute for reporting a damaged or mismatched delivery to Flipkart.

Price alone cannot establish that a phone is counterfeit or genuine. Compare the evidence and terms that determine what you can do if something goes wrong.

Red flags that justify stopping the transaction
- The model, colour or storage does not match the order.
- The phone, box and invoice show different serial numbers or IMEIs.
- The box appears re-sealed or the phone has unexplained physical handling marks.
- Accessories promised in the listing are missing.
- Parts and Service History shows Unknown, Unverified or Used on a phone sold as new.
- Apple’s coverage record predates the purchase unexpectedly, is already expired or cannot be reconciled with the invoice.
- The seller or delivery process pressures you to provide the OTP before the permitted inspection.
None of these signs alone proves counterfeiting, but each creates a documented reason to pause acceptance or open a support case. Do not erase evidence, discard packaging or arrange an informal repair while the seller and Apple are still investigating.
Evidence checklist to keep after delivery
- Flipkart order page and seller name.
- Tax invoice in its original downloadable form.
- Photos of the parcel, box labels, seals, accessories and device condition.
- Serial number and IMEI recorded privately.
- Screenshots of Apple Check Coverage, AppleCare & Warranty and Parts and Service History.
- Support case numbers, delivery-agent notes and messages with the seller.
Store the records until the return period has passed and any Apple coverage question is resolved. Mask serial and IMEI details before sharing images in public forums.

Frequently asked questions
Does Apple recognising the serial number prove the iPhone is genuine?
No. It shows that the identifier exists in Apple’s system. You still need the physical inspection, three-way identifier match, repair-history check and invoice-based coverage review.
Can I rely on the box label if it matches the order?
No. Compare the box with the iPhone and invoice. A matching box alone does not prove that the device inside is the one described or that it is unused.
What if Apple shows the wrong purchase date?
Keep the Flipkart invoice and contact Apple Support, asking what proof is required to review the date. Also preserve the marketplace order record; do not assume the date will be changed automatically.

Is a low price proof that the phone is counterfeit?
