Buy from Trezor’s official Shop, its official Amazon storefront, or an authorized reseller. Before creating or restoring a wallet, inspect the model-specific packaging and hologram, confirm every wallet-backup card is blank, connect only with official Trezor Suite, install the firmware yourself, and proceed only when Suite’s firmware-signature and hardware-authentication checks succeed. A serial number printed on the box is a packaging-batch identifier, not proof that the device is genuine.
Why verification matters before you create a wallet
A hardware wallet is supposed to keep private keys isolated from a computer or phone. That protection assumes the device has not been opened, modified, or prepared by somebody else. An unauthorized seller could have accessed the device, replaced components, installed software, or supplied a backup phrase that is already known to the attacker. If you use that wallet, funds sent to it may be recoverable by the attacker even though the device looks normal.
Verification therefore has several independent layers. Seller provenance reduces the chance that an unknown person had custody. Packaging and holograms reveal many forms of tampering. Blank backup cards ensure that the recovery words will be generated for you rather than supplied by a stranger. Finally, Trezor Suite checks cryptographically signed firmware and, on supported models, authenticates hardware. No single visual feature replaces the technical checks.
Use a trusted seller first
Acceptable purchase channels
- Trezor’s official Shop: This is the clearest chain of custody.
- Trezor’s official Amazon storefront: Confirm that the storefront, not merely the product title, is the official one.
- An authorized reseller: Check the reseller’s authorization before ordering and retain the invoice.
Trezor says devices from those channels are generally safe. An unauthorized marketplace seller, used-device listing, auction, or private sale creates an unknown-custody risk: you cannot tell who had the device before you or whether it was opened and resealed. A low price, a convincing listing, or a seller’s assurance is not a substitute for the checks below.

What to record when it arrives
- Keep the order confirmation, seller name, and delivery date.
- Photograph the outer shipping box and product packaging before opening it if you may need to make a claim.
- Do not connect the device or enter a recovery phrase while a seller dispute, return, or support case is unresolved.
Inspect the package before connecting the device
Factory packaging
Examine the retail box or foil before opening it. It should be factory sealed and free from unexplained cuts, lifted edges, punctures, re-gluing, or residue. Packaging can vary by production period and reseller stock, so compare it with the design expected for your exact model rather than with a photograph of a different model or an older review.
A clean package is only tamper evidence. It does not prove that the electronics or firmware are genuine; continue with the software and hardware checks.
Holographic seals
The hologram should be intact, clean, firmly attached, and free of tears, bubbles, lifting, or adhesive residue. A seal that has been peeled and replaced may leave marks, but the absence of marks is not a cryptographic guarantee. Do not scrape, remove, or attempt to reattach a questionable seal.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Model | Expected seal or package feature | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Safe 3 | Model-specific holographic packaging seal | Two genuine seal designs exist. The updated design began appearing in April 2024; either design is acceptable when intact. |
| Safe 5 | Hologram over the USB-C connector | A genuine seal should be clean and intact. Peeling normally leaves “VOID” residue. |
| Safe 7 | USB-C hologram | The seal may leave “VOID” residue when removed; visual inspection is only one part of authentication. |
| Model T | Seal over the connector | The model is no longer sold, so packaging may reflect older production. Use the technical checks even when the seal looks correct. |
| Model One | Two holographic package seals | Packaging styles can differ by production period and reseller stock. |
Do not reject a Safe 3 solely because its hologram differs from a picture published before April 2024. Conversely, do not accept a damaged or replaced-looking seal merely because its artwork resembles an official design.
Check every wallet-backup card
Remove the backup cards and inspect both sides under good light. They must be completely blank: no words, handwriting, printed recovery phrase, marks, or partially erased text. Trezor specifically instructs users not to use a device when words are already written or printed on the cards and to contact support.

During legitimate setup, the device generates a new backup and shows the words through its own trusted screen. You write those words onto the blank cards yourself. Never accept a phrase supplied in the box, sent by a seller, displayed on a computer, or offered by a supposed support representative. Do not photograph or type the generated words into a phone or computer.
Safe 3 card formats
Safe 3 packages from 2023 may include 12-word cards labeled “recovery seed.” Packages from 2024 may include 20-word wallet-backup cards. Both formats can be genuine; the word count and card label alone do not identify a counterfeit. The decisive requirement is that the card arrives blank and the device generates the backup during setup.
Set up only with official Trezor Suite
Start from a trusted installation
- Obtain Trezor Suite from Trezor’s official website or an installation source explicitly provided by Trezor. Avoid download links in marketplace messages, unsolicited emails, advertisements, or support chats.
- Open Suite and connect the device with the supplied cable. Do not use a browser wallet or an unknown utility for the first setup.
- Read Suite’s prompts about the trusted source, intact hologram, and factory-sealed packaging. Confirm each item only when your physical inspection supports it.
The exact on-screen wording can change as Suite is updated, but the trust decisions are the same: verify where the device came from, verify the physical package, and then let Suite verify the device’s software and hardware.
Install firmware yourself and read the authenticity result
New Trezor devices are distributed without firmware installed. The first setup therefore includes a firmware-installation step. If a supposedly new device already contains firmware before you connect it, stop. Do not create a wallet, enter a recovery phrase, or attempt to “reset” the device to make it acceptable; contact Trezor support and document what Suite displayed.
What Suite checks
- Signed firmware: Suite verifies that the firmware is signed by Trezor’s trusted signing keys.
- Hash verification: Whenever the device connects, Suite performs a hash check to detect altered firmware.
- Device-authentication status: Supported models prove that the hardware corresponds to Trezor’s expected authentication material.
A failed signature, hash, or authenticity check means the firmware may be malicious or the device should be treated as counterfeit. Disconnect it and follow Trezor support’s instructions. Do not bypass a warning because the box looked sealed or because the device still displays menus.

Do not disable authentication for an official device
Trezor advises users who use Suite with official Trezor devices not to turn off the hardware-authentication check. A prompt offering to disable or ignore the check is not a routine setup step. If you did not deliberately change a setting and Suite reports a failure, stop and investigate rather than proceeding to wallet creation.

Firmware signatures establish that the software is authorized. Hardware authentication adds another control that tests the physical device.
| Model | Hardware-authentication architecture | Setup implication | Availability or support note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safe 3 | Secure Element certificates | Leave the certificate check enabled in Suite and proceed only when it passes. | Current model; the April 2024 seal update affects packaging appearance, not the certificate requirement. |
| Safe 5 | Secure Element certificates | Suite should authenticate the device in addition to verifying signed firmware. | USB-C hologram inspection remains useful tamper evidence. |
| Safe 7 | Challenge-response involving its secure elements and microcontroller (MCU); Suite checks returned signatures against Trezor public keys. | A successful response is a technical control; never disable it when using official hardware and Suite. | Its authentication uses three hardware layers. |
| Model T | Use the authentication and firmware controls presented by the current Suite version. | Older packaging does not excuse a failed technical check. | No longer sold; Trezor’s support statement says maintenance continues until at least 2031 and critical security fixes until at least 2036. |
| Model One | Use Suite’s firmware and device checks; visual seals alone are insufficient. | Confirm both package seals are intact, then complete the technical checks. | Package styles vary by production period. |
The different seal artwork, card format, or connector placement should never be used as the only comparison between models. Authentication behavior and a clean setup are more meaningful than matching a photograph.
A complete pre-use verification procedure
Use this sequence for a new device. If any step fails, stop rather than moving to the next step.
- Confirm the seller. Match the order to Trezor’s official Shop, official Amazon storefront, or an authorized reseller. Treat an unauthorized source as an unresolved custody risk.
- Record the condition. Photograph the unopened package, seals, and contents before connecting anything.
- Match the model. Identify whether the device is Safe 3, Safe 5, Safe 7, Model T, or Model One, then apply that model’s expected seal and packaging details.
- Inspect all seals. Look for intact adhesion, no tears, no lifting, and no unexplained residue. For Safe 3, accept either genuine seal design when intact.
- Inspect the cards. Reject any card with prewritten, printed, erased, or partially visible words.
- Install or open official Suite. Follow its prompts to confirm trusted source, factory seal, and hologram condition.
- Connect the device. Use a known-good cable and the setup path in Suite, not an unverified third-party application.
- Check the initial firmware state. A new device should require firmware installation. Stop if firmware is already present.
- Install firmware through Suite. Let Suite download, verify, and install the signed firmware; do not sideload a file from another person.
- Read every warning. Continue only if the signed-firmware, hash, and applicable hardware-authentication checks pass.
- Create the wallet and backup. Generate the backup on the device, write it on the blank cards, and verify the words when Suite or the device asks you to do so.
- Store the backup offline. Anyone with the words can control the wallet. Do not save them in cloud storage, email, a password manager, screenshots, or a computer file.
What a serial number can—and cannot—tell you
You cannot authenticate Trezor hardware by looking up a serial number. Trezor states that, as a security measure, its devices have no serial numbers. A number printed on the box identifies a packaging batch; it does not prove that the device inside is genuine or that it has not been replaced.

Use the number, if present, only as a reference when discussing an order or packaging discrepancy with support. Do not treat a successful seller-provided lookup, a photograph of a number, or a match between the box and a listing as a substitute for the blank-card, firmware, hash, and hardware-authentication checks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warnings that require you to stop
- The box or foil is opened, re-glued, cut, crushed, or otherwise inconsistent with a factory seal.
- A hologram is torn, lifted, dirty with adhesive, or replaced-looking; a “VOID” mark appears where the seal should be intact.
- Any backup card has words, dots, impressions, handwriting, or printed instructions that could be mistaken for a recovery phrase.
- Suite reports that firmware is already installed on a new device.
- Firmware signature or hash verification fails.
- Hardware authentication fails, is unavailable unexpectedly, or Suite asks you to disable the check.
- The seller or a purported support agent asks for your recovery words, PIN, passphrase, or a screenshot of them.
Disconnect the device, preserve the package and purchase records, and contact Trezor support through the official support channel. Do not initialize, restore, sign a transaction, or send funds while the warning is unresolved.
Common mistakes and the safer alternative
| Mistake | Why it is unsafe | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Buying from an unknown marketplace seller because the price is lower | Prior custody and possible modification are unknown. | Use Trezor’s official Shop, official Amazon storefront, or an authorized reseller. |
| Trusting an intact-looking hologram as the sole proof | Tamper evidence does not authenticate firmware or electronics. | Complete Suite’s signed-firmware, hash, and hardware checks. |
| Using a recovery phrase printed in the package | Someone else may know the phrase and control the funds. | Require blank cards and generate the backup on the device. |
| Searching for a box serial number | The number identifies packaging batches, not the device. | Use technical authentication and ask support about discrepancies. |
| Installing firmware from a file sent by a seller | The file could be altered or malicious. | Install through official Suite and let it verify signatures and hashes. |
| Disabling a failed authentication check | You would be bypassing a control designed to detect an untrusted device. | Stop and contact official support. |
If you already used a suspicious device
If you entered a recovery phrase into a device with a damaged seal, prewritten cards, preinstalled firmware, or a failed Suite check, assume that phrase may be compromised. Do not add more funds. From a verified, clean device, create a new wallet and transfer assets only after confirming the new device passes the complete workflow. If you used a phrase that came with the device rather than one generated during setup, treat it as exposed even if no warning appeared.
For a device that has never held funds, disconnect it and preserve all packaging, cards, receipts, and screenshots of Suite warnings for support. Do not attempt unofficial repairs or firmware changes that could destroy evidence of tampering.

The decision rule
Use the device only when all of these conditions are true: the seller is trusted; packaging and the model-appropriate hologram are intact; every backup card is blank; a new device arrives without firmware; official Suite installs and verifies signed firmware; hash verification succeeds; and the applicable hardware-authentication check passes. If even one condition is abnormal, do not create or restore a wallet. Physical appearance can support confidence, but Suite’s cryptographic and hardware checks are the decisive controls.
