Buy through the manufacturer or a reseller on its current authorized list, then verify the device before creating accounts or sending crypto. Inspect the package, reject any wallet that arrives with a PIN or recovery phrase, install only the official companion application, and complete the vendor’s authenticity and firmware checks. A failed check, an already initialized device, an unsolicited replacement, or any request to type your recovery phrase into a computer or website is a stop-use event.

These steps establish that the wallet can present the manufacturer’s expected cryptographic evidence and recognized firmware. They cannot prove that nobody opened the enclosure while the original secure element remained intact, so provenance, physical inspection, software checks, and safe initialization must be used together.

Why authenticity and tamper checks matter

A hardware wallet protects signing keys by keeping the recovery seed inside a dedicated device. If a criminal obtains a wallet before you do, they may replace the enclosure, alter its firmware, install a hidden component, or supply a seed they already recorded. A device can therefore look new and still be unsafe.

The threat is not merely theoretical. In a 2026 incident report, Ledger described genuine devices that had been opened, fitted with hidden components designed to capture recovery phrases, and returned to distribution. The report did not establish how common that attack was, but it demonstrates why a sealed-looking box or a reputable marketplace listing is not sufficient on its own.

Authenticity checks answer a narrower question: can this device prove that it contains expected manufacturer credentials and is running recognized software? They do not certify an untouched supply-chain history. Treat the checks as several independent gates rather than as a single guarantee.

1. Verify where the wallet came from

Do this before opening the parcel. Use the manufacturer’s own shop or its current authorized-reseller list. Trezor says purchases from its official shop, Amazon storefront, or an authorized reseller are most likely to be safe; it warns that an unauthorized seller may have had access to the device. Ledger likewise directs buyers to its official storefronts and regional authorized-reseller lists.

Purchase route How to treat it What to record
Manufacturer’s shop Preferred route; retain the order confirmation. Order number, seller name, shipping address, and delivery date.
Reseller on the manufacturer’s current list Acceptable when the listing, seller identity, and model match the official listing. Exact reseller, marketplace account, product page, and invoice.
Marketplace seller not shown on the official list Do not rely on ratings or a low price. The seller may have accessed or replaced the device. Save screenshots and packaging in case support needs them.
Used, refurbished, or privately sold wallet Do not use it for a new seed. A previous owner could retain a copy of its recovery material. Assume the device is compromised unless the manufacturer has a documented refurbishment process.

Check the list immediately before buying because reseller authorization can change. A listing that uses a manufacturer’s photographs or branding is not evidence that the seller is authorized.

2. Inspect the package before connecting the device

Photograph the unopened parcel and its labels. Look for opened or replaced wrapping, cuts, glue residue, mismatched printing, crushed areas, missing accessories, or a model name that does not match your order. Compare the contents with the model’s official setup guide rather than with an unverified unboxing video.

Trezor Safe 5 and the Safe family

Trezor Safe 5 documentation specifies a protective screen sticker and a tamper-evident holographic seal over the USB-C port. A torn, lifted, cloudy, or replaced seal is a reason to stop and contact Trezor. The absence of obvious damage is not proof that the electronics were untouched: sophisticated repackaging can restore a convincing exterior.

Other models

Use the exact packaging and accessory checklist for your model. Do not assume that a seal, sticker, or shrink-wrap design from one generation applies to another. Missing cables or cards may be a packing error, but do not initialize the device until the manufacturer confirms that the contents are correct.

3. Reject a pre-seeded or preconfigured wallet

A legitimate Ledger device never arrives with a recovery phrase or PIN code pre-configured. You must choose the PIN, and the wallet must generate its recovery phrase on the device’s own screen. The same principle applies to any hardware wallet: the seller must never know the seed that controls your accounts.

  • Reject a printed 12-, 18-, or 24-word phrase in the box.
  • Reject a phrase sent by email, chat, or a seller’s support message.
  • Reject a device that asks for a pre-existing PIN on first use.
  • Reject a wallet that opens directly to accounts or balances before you initialize it.
  • Reject instructions telling you to enter the supplied phrase in a computer, phone, website, or recovery utility.

Do not test a supplied phrase by depositing a small amount. Anyone who supplied it can spend every asset associated with it. Disconnect the device, preserve the phrase and packaging as evidence, and contact support through the manufacturer’s official site.

4. Install only authentic companion software

Download Ledger Wallet or Trezor Suite from the manufacturer’s official website or the official mobile-store listing. For SafePal, use the official application identified in its documentation. Avoid links in marketplace messages, search advertisements, social-media posts, QR codes printed on inserts, and unsolicited support emails.

A counterfeit application can falsely report that a device is genuine or can capture a recovery phrase. Check the publisher name, spelling, store listing, and update history. Keep your operating system and the wallet application updated, but do not install a browser extension or desktop package supplied by a stranger. If an application asks for the entire recovery phrase during ordinary setup, close it; normal wallet use does not require uploading the phrase.

5. Run the manufacturer’s device and firmware checks

Perform these checks before creating accounts, importing a seed, or funding an address. Connect the wallet only to the authentic application you installed in the previous step.

Ledger: Genuine Check

  1. Open Ledger Wallet and connect the device using the documented setup path.
  2. During setup, and when the device is connected to My Ledger, start Genuine Check when prompted.
  3. Allow the application to establish its secure channel and wait for the result. Ledger describes a factory-provisioned secret, an issuer certificate, and a device key pair used to produce cryptographic proof.
  4. Continue only when Ledger Wallet reports that the device is authentic and no firmware warning is shown.

A warning, failed check, unexpected reconnect loop, or request to bypass the check is a stop-use event. Ledger states that no visual inspection, packaging check, or seller reputation can substitute for running Genuine Check with authentic software.

Trezor Safe 5 and other Safe models

  1. Open Trezor Suite obtained from Trezor’s official distribution channel.
  2. Connect the wallet and leave Device Check enabled. Trezor says users who only use Trezor Suite with official Trezor devices should not turn this check off.
  3. Let Suite perform its hardware-level challenge-response authentication with secure-element certificates and check the firmware signatures.
  4. Review the firmware version and RevisionID. Suite compares them with its known database and performs a firmware hash check.

Trezor Safe 3 and Safe 5 include a secure element. Safe 7 adds a third microcontroller-unit signature layer. A certificate, signature, RevisionID, or hash mismatch means stop and contact Trezor support; do not attempt to “repair” the device with firmware from a forum or file-sharing site.

SafePal S1, S1 Pro, and X1

SafePal documents a compulsory device-authentication process for supported S1, S1 Pro, and X1 models. The process reports whether the unit is genuine and whether it has been used before. A used-before result is incompatible with treating the wallet as a fresh device; follow SafePal’s incident guidance before doing anything else.

Vendor or family Authentication evidence Firmware evidence Important limitation
Ledger Genuine Check uses a factory-provisioned secret and cryptographic proof through a secure channel. Ledger Wallet reports the device state during setup and My Ledger connection. Genuine Check cannot detect an unauthorized physical modification if the original secure element remains intact.
Trezor Safe 3/Safe 5 Suite uses challenge-response authentication and secure-element certificates. Firmware signature, version, RevisionID, and hash are checked against Trezor’s database. A passing software check does not establish an untouched enclosure or shipping history.
Trezor Safe 7 Includes the Safe-family authentication approach with an additional MCU signature layer. Suite performs the documented signature and firmware checks. Physical inspection and trusted provenance are still required.
SafePal S1/S1 Pro/X1 Compulsory authentication reports genuineness and whether the device has been used before. Follow the model’s official application and update process. Do not proceed if authentication indicates prior use or fails.

6. Initialize the wallet as a new device

After a clean authenticity result, initialize rather than restore. The exact labels differ by model, but the security decisions are the same.

  1. Choose a new PIN on the hardware wallet. Do not reuse a PIN supplied by a seller or shown in an app.
  2. Use the device to generate a new recovery phrase. Read each word from the hardware screen and write it on an offline medium; never photograph it or save it in cloud storage.
  3. Complete the device’s word-by-word confirmation test. If the wallet displays a phrase without requiring you to generate or confirm it, stop.
  4. Set up accounts in the official application only after the device accepts the new PIN and phrase.
  5. When receiving funds, compare the address shown in the application with the address displayed on the hardware screen. Malware can replace an address copied from a computer.
  6. Send a small test transaction if your own risk policy calls for one, then verify the destination and confirmation on the device. A test payment does not compensate for a failed authenticity check.

Keep the recovery phrase offline and physically protected. Never type the words into a support chat, website, desktop form, phone note, password manager, or “synchronization” tool. The only exception is a manufacturer-documented recovery flow that requires direct entry on the hardware wallet itself; the phrase must not be transmitted to an application or server.

What a passing check proves—and what it cannot prove

Evidence What it supports What it does not establish
Authorized purchase The device came through a channel the manufacturer considers controlled. That the parcel was not opened after shipment.
Intact packaging or seal No obvious opening is visible. That a sophisticated reseal or internal modification did not occur.
Cryptographic device check The device can present expected manufacturer credentials and respond to the authentic application. That every physical component is original or that no hidden component is present.
Firmware signature and hash The checked firmware matches recognized manufacturer data. That the enclosure, circuit board, or supply chain was untouched.
New seed generated on screen The seller did not provide the seed you are using and cannot know it from the setup process. That a compromised device will handle the seed safely if its hardware has been altered.

Ledger explicitly warns that Genuine Check cannot detect unauthorized physical modifications, such as spying implants, when the original secure element remains intact. That limitation is why a clean result must be combined with a trusted purchase route, careful inspection, and refusal to use any preconfigured material.

Stop-use red flags and the correct response

Red flag Immediate action
A recovery phrase or PIN is supplied in the box or by the seller. Disconnect the wallet. Do not enter the phrase or send funds. Preserve the materials and report the seller.
The device is initialized or demands an existing PIN. Do not reset it and do not attempt to discover the PIN. Contact the manufacturer through its official support channel.
Genuine Check, Device Check, firmware signature, or hash verification fails. Stop updating and stop using the wallet. Save the exact error and contact official support.
Packaging appears opened, resealed, damaged, or incomplete. Do not connect the device. Photograph the condition and request a replacement or investigation.
An unsolicited replacement arrives. Do not pair it with your accounts. Verify the shipment independently with the manufacturer.
A support message directs you to an unofficial download or asks for your words. Ignore the message, report it, and use the support address reached from the manufacturer’s official site.
Any application or person asks for all 12, 18, or 24 recovery words. Stop immediately. Never share them; Ledger’s guidance says the 24 words must not be shared with anyone under any circumstances.

If funds have already been placed on a suspect device, do not enter its phrase into another computer or website. Obtain incident-specific advice from the manufacturer or a qualified security professional. If the seed may have been exposed, create a fresh seed on a known-good device and move assets only after you have a safe, verified signing path. Treat the old seed as permanently compromised.

How to make the verification repeatable

For a personal wallet, keep the purchase invoice, photographs of the package, model and serial information, application version, firmware version, and the result of each check in a private offline record. Do not record the recovery phrase in that log. For an organization, require two people to inspect the shipment, verify the seller against the current authorized list, and approve the device before treasury funds are transferred.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeat the application and firmware checks after a major software update, after an unexplained replacement, and whenever support asks you to install a new package. A normal update should come through the official application and should not require disclosure of the recovery phrase. If the update path, device identity, or displayed address changes unexpectedly, stop and investigate before signing.

Decision checklist before sending crypto

  • Did you buy from the manufacturer or a currently authorized reseller?
  • Did the package and model-specific contents arrive without suspicious opening or substitution?
  • Did the device arrive without a PIN, recovery phrase, accounts, or balances?
  • Did you install the genuine companion application from the manufacturer or an official mobile store?
  • Did the vendor’s device-authentication check pass?
  • Did firmware signature, version, RevisionID, or hash checks pass where the model supports them?
  • Did you generate and confirm a new phrase on the hardware screen?
  • Did you verify the receiving address on the hardware wallet’s display?
  • Has nobody asked for your recovery phrase?

If any answer is no or uncertain, do not fund the wallet. Disconnect it and resolve the uncertainty through official support before proceeding.
