Never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on a website. These checks can reduce risk, but they cannot certify an offering or guarantee that a token will gain value.
What to check before you interact with a presale
Use two separate tests: whether the page is genuinely associated with the project, and whether the offering makes sense as an investment. Passing one test does not mean passing the other.

How to verify a crypto presale promotion
1. Reach the project independently
Do not start with an unsolicited direct message, an ad, an influencer link, or a link attached to a random token or NFT. Open an established official project channel yourself, then follow its presale link. Compare the full domain character by character with the address you expect. Watch for substituted letters, added words, unusual endings, or misspellings.
A promoted search result or widely shared social post is not proof of authenticity. Scam operators can build polished dapps, imitate brands, and create fake news-style pages to make a promotion look established. MetaMask advises: “Always double-check the URL before you make any transactions.”

2. Investigate the people, project, and claims
Look up the named team members and entities using sources independent of the presale page. Search their names alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” Compare the presale’s terms and claims with the project’s own documentation, and check whether the token’s rights and intended use are clearly described.
Pressure to act immediately, guaranteed gains, and claims that an investment has little or no risk are serious warning signs. A joint SEC and CFTC staff alert identifies high guaranteed returns and promises of little or no risk as red flags. MetaMask also describes hype and fear of missing out as tactics used in presale scams.

A token’s name, ticker, logo, social following, celebrity association, site design, audit claim, or apparent listing does not by itself establish that the promotion is genuine. Anyone can create a token with a chosen name and supply; verify claims rather than treating appearances as proof.
3. Read the wallet request before signing
A connection prompt, a token approval, and a transaction are different actions. Do not assume that connecting means funds have moved, or that an approval is harmless. When the wallet presents a request, identify the chain, asset, recipient or spender, operation, and amount or permission being requested.

An approval may authorize a dapp to move a token up to a specified cap. Decline any amount or permission you cannot explain. If the wallet’s wording or the effect of the request is unclear, stop and consult the wallet provider’s official documentation before signing. Wallet warnings and safety controls can help, but neither a warning nor its absence proves whether an offering is legitimate.
4. Keep your recovery phrase private
Never type your Secret Recovery Phrase into a presale webpage, support form, chat, or “verification” workflow. MetaMask says that no legitimate MetaMask website will request it and warns that a fraudulent site asking for it can compromise the wallet. Its guidance is explicit: “You should never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on any website, regardless of how convincing it is.” If a page asks for the phrase, stop. Obtain wallet software only through official wallet links or official extension stores. See MetaMask’s instructions for verifying its wallet.

Assess the investment separately from the website
An authentic project page does not make a token a good investment. The CFTC advises buyers to understand the rights attached to a token and consider factors that can affect its value:
- Whether people are adopting it as a medium of exchange or store of value.
- Whether future demand or uses are plausible.
- How liquid the token may be, including whether buyers could have difficulty selling.
- Whether competitors or technology changes could affect its use or demand.
- The risk of theft, including theft through hacking.
Buying only because you expect to sell later at a higher price is speculation, not evidence of value. A white paper, roadmap, audit, large online community, or exchange listing does not establish that a token will appreciate or that buyers will be able to exit on favorable terms.

Do not assume that every presale token is a security, or that calling a token “utility” places it outside securities law. The SEC’s April 22, 2026 guidance on transactions involving crypto assets says securities laws apply when crypto assets are securities and notes that some assets that are not securities may become subject to securities laws when offered and sold under an investment contract. Legal treatment depends on the facts of the offering and applicable law.
When to stop
- You cannot confirm the domain through an independently reached project channel.
- The people, terms, token rights, or intended use are unclear or conflict with other credible information.
- The promotion promises guaranteed returns, claims little or no risk, or pressures you to act immediately.
- The wallet request asks for an approval, transaction, or permission you cannot explain.
- Any website, chat, or support form asks for your Secret Recovery Phrase.
No checklist can eliminate the risk of a malicious contract, loss of liquidity, theft, or a failed investment. Treat verification as a way to make a more informed decision—not as a safety certificate.
