Verify any edition number with the issuer or a matching certificate or record. There is no universal visual test or cross-brand registry, and many figures are not individually numbered.
Start with the exact figure and release
Record the brand, figure or character name, product code, claimed edition, and claimed release or rerelease date. Then look for maker-issued information for that specific product and release, such as an official product page, counterfeit notice, store listing, or customer-support guidance. Release timing and distribution region can matter: genuine packaging and labels may differ between releases or markets.
Use photographs of the actual item rather than relying only on stock images. Compare the box from several sides, the figure, the underside or back of its base, and any certificate or numbered mark with the maker’s references. A handheld magnifier can help read small print or inspect molded marks, but magnification does not authenticate an item.
Compare several product-specific details
Check the maker and brand logos, copyright text on the box and base, product and barcode identifiers, packaging details, included parts, and any marks specific to the release. Look for consistency across the figure, box, certificate, and maker’s records. A serial number that identifies a different product, model, or image is a reason to pause and contact the issuer.

Do not treat one sticker, hologram, barcode, or certificate as proof by itself. A certificate can be detached, copied, or paired with the wrong item, and edition notations may be authorized, fabricated, or copied. Use the issuer’s own verification route when available.
Example: Good Smile Company’s figma Joker
Good Smile Company’s counterfeit guidance explains that identifiers can depend on release timing. In its figma Joker example, the first edition, rerelease, and second rerelease share one JAN code, while the third rerelease uses another. That code distinction applies to this product example; it is not a general rule for other figures.

Why a visual checklist cannot certify a figure
Good Smile Company warns that not all bootlegs show the characteristics in its guidance, so absence of those signs does not guarantee that an item is genuine. The company also notes that license-sticker appearance can vary by release and region; some products print license information on the box or have no separate label. An absent or different sticker alone does not settle authenticity. See its bootleg information and photo-submission guidance.
Understand what an edition number means
Edition size is the announced quantity in a production run. An individual edition number identifies one piece within a run when a product is numbered. Those are different claims: a number on an item does not necessarily tell you the total made, and not every collectible figure carries an individual number.

Numbering practices vary by maker, line, and product. Sideshow says its Collector Edition products in most cases have an announced edition size and a unique edition number; its sixth-scale figures have no specific edition number unless otherwise stated. Check the information for the exact item rather than assuming all products from a maker follow the same scheme. Read Sideshow’s explanation of Exclusive and Collector Editions.
Published thresholds are also product-category-specific. Mattel’s FAQ defines Limited Edition Barbie dolls as those produced in quantities of 35,000 or fewer and calls dolls made in greater quantities Collectible dolls. Mattel says exact production numbers are never released publicly. This Barbie definition is not a standard for figures or collectibles generally. See the Mattel FAQ.

Verify an individual number with its issuer
If a figure is supposed to be numbered, compare its mark with the certificate or record and follow the issuer’s verification instructions. Issuer systems are product-specific rather than parts of a universal figure registry.
- Upper Deck: For items covered by its system, Upper Deck describes matching the serial-numbered hologram on the item to the certificate and checking the hologram ID in its database. Details are at Upper Deck’s authenticity and fraud-prevention page.
- PSA/DNA: PSA describes matching a certification record, its image, and identifying label to the item. Consult its support FAQ for its process.
These examples do not mean a figure should have an Upper Deck or PSA record. Use them only when that issuer’s system applies to the object in question.

Send the maker useful evidence when the answer is unclear
Follow the maker’s current support instructions for the specific brand. Good Smile Company asks people seeking an authenticity assessment to provide photos of the package front, back, and side; the actual item; and the copyright text on the base. It says it may be unable to assess an item if the photos are insufficient. Keep the original packaging and any certificate while you contact support.
- Write down the brand, product name, product code, claimed edition, and claimed release or rerelease date.
- Collect clear photos of the actual figure and packaging from the angles the maker requests, including identifiers and copyright marks.
- Include the certificate or record if one came with the item, and ask the issuer how to verify its number.
- Wait for the maker or issuer’s assessment before describing your own visual comparison as formal authentication.
How to assess a listing before you buy
Ask the seller for current photos showing the packaging, figure, base marks, barcode, certificate, and individual number if the maker says the product should have one. Compare those details with the maker’s references for the claimed release and region. If the listing’s identifiers conflict, the seller cannot show the item’s marks, or the edition claim has no support from the maker or issuer, pause and request clarification. For Good Smile products, the company recommends buying through its official store or partner shops; that guidance concerns its own products and is not a substitute for checking a secondary-market item’s identity.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not call an item fake solely because it lacks an edition number; first confirm whether that exact product is supposed to be individually numbered.
- Do not assume an edition number states the total production quantity or proves that the edition claim is authorized.
- Do not treat packaging differences as proof of a counterfeit without accounting for release timing and distribution region.
- Do not treat a certificate, sticker, hologram, or barcode as a guarantee unless the relevant issuer’s verification process confirms the item.
- Do not apply one maker’s numbering rules or counterfeit clues to another brand’s figures.
The U.S. Department of Energy handbook offers a broader document-check principle: compare a product’s serial number with its documentation, including product type, model or part number, and serial number; inconsistent dates can also be a fraud indicator.
