Do not judge a cryptocurrency platform by a slogan, a meme, or a single token donation. Verify the candidate’s exact words, confirm the office’s legal authority, inspect campaign-finance and personal-disclosure records, and then compare the promises with votes, bill sponsorships, committee work, and amendments. Classify each claim as confirmed, partly supported, contradicted, or not yet verifiable.
The process below works for federal, state, and local races. It shows where to look, what each record can prove, and how to document uncertainty without treating silence as a position.
What a verified cryptocurrency policy claim looks like
A verifiable claim identifies a mechanism, an institution, and an action. “I support crypto” is a position signal, not a testable policy. “I would direct the securities regulator to create a custody rule for customer-held digital assets” identifies an agency, a rulemaking task, and a type of asset.
Break broad language into separate issues before checking the record. A candidate may support one and oppose another.

For each issue, save the candidate’s exact wording and its date. A dated statement on an official campaign site, debate transcript, speech, or verified social account is stronger than an undated graphic or a repost that omits context.
Use five tests for every claim
| Test | Question to ask | Strong evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Specificity | Does the statement name a mechanism and responsible institution? | A bill, rule, budget action, appointment, or clearly described legislative objective |
| Consistency | Do public statements match votes, sponsorships, amendments, and committee work? | Dated primary records plus the candidate’s explanation of any change |
| Financial alignment | Do disclosed assets, income, donors, PACs, and vendors create a relevant interest or pressure? | Official campaign filings and personal financial disclosures |
| Feasibility | Does the office sought have authority to do what is promised? | A proposal matched to congressional, executive, state, or local powers |
| Evidence quality | Is the source dated, attributable, and complete? | Original filings, transcripts, bills, roll-call records, and signed disclosures |
Step 1: Capture the claim before interpreting it
Open the candidate’s official campaign site, a complete debate transcript, the full speech, or the candidate’s verified social account. Copy the sentence exactly, record the publication or event date, and preserve the surrounding paragraph or video timestamp. Do not silently “correct” an ambiguous phrase; quote it and explain what would need to be true for it to become a policy.
- Write the verbatim statement. Keep qualifiers such as “explore,” “oppose,” “immediately,” or “when Congress acts.” They change the commitment.
- Identify the promised action. Is the candidate promising a vote, a bill, an executive direction, an appointment, a veto, an enforcement priority, or only support in principle?
- Split combined slogans. Treat “protect innovation and consumers” as at least two questions: what innovation rule and what consumer remedy?
- Record timing. Note whether the statement predates a major market event, a new bill, or the current campaign. A later statement may clarify or reverse an earlier one.
- List missing details. Flag undefined terms such as “reasonable regulation,” “freedom,” or “anti-CBDC” for follow-up rather than guessing the candidate’s meaning.
Create one entry per issue. This prevents a detailed answer on stablecoins from being mistaken for a position on mining or taxation.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Step 2: Confirm which election authority and filing system apply
First identify the race: federal, state, county, municipal, or another local office. The filing system and the office’s powers depend on that classification.
Federal candidates and committees
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) defines a federal candidate as someone who raises or spends more than $5,000. Once that threshold is met, use the FEC candidate and committee profile and its filings to verify the campaign’s legal committee, reports, receipts, disbursements, and compliance history.
State and local candidates
Use the state disclosure directory and the relevant election authority for state, county, and municipal races. A city council candidate cannot enact federal exchange rules, and a governor generally cannot rewrite federal tax law. The correct authority is part of the policy test, not a technical detail.
Do not assign the FEC powers it does not have
The FEC administers federal campaign-finance law. It states that it does not have jurisdiction over voter registration, ballot access, voter fraud, voter intimidation, or election results. Direct those questions to the applicable state or local election office. Using the wrong agency can produce a confident but irrelevant answer.

Step 3: Read the campaign’s public record, not just its press releases
The FEC’s candidate-research checklist points to several record types. Review them together because each answers a different question.
| Record | What it can show | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Committee registration and reports | Which committee is legally responsible, reporting periods, receipts, and spending | Why a candidate chose a policy |
| Itemized contributions | Named donors and amounts when itemization rules apply | That a donor purchased a specific position |
| Disbursements and vendors | Consultants, advertising, legal work, data services, and other campaign spending | That a vendor’s industry reflects the candidate’s views |
| PAC support and transfers | Outside committee involvement and money moving between committees | That every supported issue is shared by the candidate |
| Enforcement matters and audits | Documented compliance questions, findings, and resolutions | Whether a crypto policy is substantively sound |
| Advisory opinions | How the FEC interpreted a campaign-finance question in a particular situation | A general ruling on cryptocurrency regulation |
| Campaign reports and election results | Timing, fundraising changes, spending patterns, and prior electoral outcomes | Voter approval of a particular crypto proposal |
Federal committees must make reports public on FEC.gov within 48 hours of receipt, according to the FEC overview. Treat that as a publication timetable, not a guarantee that every transaction appears immediately or that a filing is complete. Check amendments and later reports when a number matters.
During the applicable reporting period, individual contributions above $200 are itemized with contributor information under the FEC disclosure explanation. Examine the reporting period and committee type before comparing amounts; do not compare a single quarterly figure with a full-cycle total.
Step 4: Separate crypto fundraising from crypto policy
Federal committees may receive bitcoin contributions. The FEC describes bitcoin as “money or anything of value.” A committee must value the contribution at market price when received, disclose it, and handle it subject to source restrictions and contribution limits.
A bitcoin receipt proves that the committee accepted a contribution under the applicable rules. It does not prove support for a stablecoin bill, opposition to a CBDC, or any other policy. To test a connection, document the donor, the committee, the amount and valuation date, any connected PAC or company, and the candidate’s own dated policy statement. Avoid implying a quid pro quo without direct evidence.
Questions to ask about a disclosed crypto contribution
- Was the contribution reported by the candidate’s authorized committee or by another committee?
- Was the asset valued at the market price when received, and does an amended filing change the amount?
- Is the donor an individual, a permitted entity, or an organization whose source may be restricted?
- Does the committee’s spending show crypto-related consultants, advertising, lobbying, or event vendors?
- Is there a separate policy document tying the fundraising activity to a legislative or regulatory objective?
Keep the conclusion narrow: “The committee accepted a disclosed bitcoin contribution” is supported if the filing says so. “The candidate supports crypto deregulation” requires separate policy and action evidence.
Step 5: Check the candidate’s personal financial interests
Campaign money is not the same as personal wealth. Review the House Clerk’s online financial disclosure reports for Members and congressional candidates. For presidential and vice-presidential candidates, use the public financial disclosure process described by the FEC and the Office of Government Ethics (OGE).

Compare reported assets, income, and transactions with the proposal’s likely effects. Look for direct digital-asset holdings, interests in companies that issue or custody tokens, income from advisory work, stock or fund exposure, and transactions close to a policy announcement. A disclosure can reveal a potential conflict or an incentive to explain; it does not prove improper conduct or determine the candidate’s actual vote.

| Proposal | Relevant disclosure question | Careful conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Stablecoin reserve requirements | Does the candidate report an interest in an issuer, bank, or reserve asset? | Potentially relevant financial alignment; seek the candidate’s explanation |
| Exchange-custody rules | Are there assets, income, or transactions tied to an exchange, broker, or custodian? | Possible exposure, not proof of a promised regulatory outcome |
| Mining policy | Are there disclosed energy, infrastructure, or mining interests? | Context for scrutiny; assess the actual wording and authority |
| Tax changes | Would the proposal affect disclosed assets, income, or transactions? | Compare the stated tax treatment with the filing, without inferring motive |
Step 6: Compare promises with the governing record
Search the candidate’s legislative record for votes, bill sponsorships, committee work, and amendments that correspond to each issue. Record the bill number, the vote date, the action taken, and the candidate’s explanation. A future promise and a past vote are different kinds of evidence: a promise describes intended action, while a vote documents a past decision in a particular bill.
How to evaluate a match
- Direct match: The candidate sponsored or voted on a measure containing the mechanism now being promised.
- Partial match: The candidate acted on a related topic but not the promised mechanism, such as consumer warnings without custody rules.
- Conflict: A documented vote or amendment moves in the opposite direction.
- No record: The officeholder had no relevant vote, or the candidate has not held an office with a comparable record.
Read the bill text and amendment disposition, not only a headline. A “yes” vote on a large budget or authorization bill may contain several unrelated provisions. Note whether the candidate’s stated reason addresses the crypto section or a different part of the measure.
Step 7: Test whether the office can deliver the promise
Map each proposal to the institution that controls it.
| Proposed action | Likely authority to verify | Feasibility check |
|---|---|---|
| Change a federal tax rule | Congress through legislation, subject to executive implementation | Does the candidate seek a legislative office, and is a bill or revenue mechanism described? |
| Direct an agency’s enforcement or rulemaking priorities | The executive branch and the agency’s statutory authority | Can the office appoint, supervise, or direct the relevant agency? |
| Create a state licensing requirement | State legislature, governor, or state regulator, depending on law | Does the candidate’s state office possess the required authority? |
| Set a municipal electricity or zoning rule affecting mining | City or county government | Is the proposal within local zoning, utility, or permitting powers? |
| Ban or authorize a CBDC nationwide | Usually Congress and the federal monetary authorities | Does the statement identify the legal instrument rather than claiming unilateral power? |
Promises that require another institution are not automatically false. Label them as contingent: the candidate may advocate, nominate, veto, or negotiate rather than implement the rule alone. A feasibility gap is a material qualification voters should see.

Step 8: Grade the evidence and record uncertainty
Use four labels consistently. Attach the label to each individual issue, not to the candidate as a whole.
- Confirmed: A dated primary statement and a matching official action or record support the claim.
- Partly supported: Some elements are documented, but the mechanism, scope, timing, or authority is missing.
- Contradicted: A reliable, dated record conflicts with the current claim and no later explanation resolves it.
- Not yet verifiable: The statement is too vague, the filing is missing, the record is sealed or unavailable, or the candidate has not held the relevant office.
“Not yet verifiable” is not the same as “opposed.” Record missing filings, stale statements, unresolved conflicts, and source limitations explicitly. The FEC’s campaign-finance data page describes its financial data as helping voters make informed decisions; the quality of that decision depends on preserving those distinctions.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistaking a slogan for a proposal
Problem: “Protect innovation” is treated as a complete platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix: Ask which law, agency, asset, deadline, and enforcement remedy the candidate means. If the answer never becomes specific, mark the claim partly supported or not yet verifiable.
Using a repost or anonymous graphic as the source
Problem: A clipped video or graphic may omit a qualification or use an altered date.
Fix: Locate the full transcript, original video, official post, or filing. Preserve the original wording and context.
Treating a donor as proof of control
Problem: A crypto-related contribution is presented as evidence that the candidate will deliver the donor’s policy.

Reading silence as opposition
Problem: No vote or statement is interpreted as a “no.”
Fix: Use “not yet verifiable” unless the candidate had a clear opportunity to act and the record documents a contrary decision.
Ignoring amendments and bill scope
Problem: A vote label is used without reading the provision or amendment.
Fix: Open the bill text, amendment, roll-call date, and explanation. State exactly which provision the evidence supports.
Applying federal records to a local race
Problem: A city candidate is judged by FEC data or is credited with powers held by Congress.
Fix: Start with the race’s election authority and map the proposal to the office’s legal powers.
Overlooking stale statements
Problem: An old position is quoted as current without checking later statements.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Build a timeline, flag reversals, and ask for the candidate’s explanation rather than choosing the most convenient quote.
How to publish or share a fair verification
Lead with the issue and the evidence status, not a character judgment. Quote the claim, identify the dated primary record, explain the office’s authority, and state what remains unknown. Distinguish facts from interpretation: a filing can show a contribution, asset, or vote; it cannot by itself prove motive, corruption, or future compliance.
When records conflict, show both entries and the reason one is more authoritative or more recent. When a filing is unavailable, say which reporting period or disclosure is missing. Invite readers to check the bill, filing, transcript, or election-office record themselves. This makes the conclusion reproducible without asking them to trust an anonymous summary.
Quick Recap
Final pre-vote checklist
- Copy the candidate’s exact cryptocurrency statement and date.
- Split it into separate issues such as stablecoins, custody, taxation, mining, sanctions, consumer protection, or CBDCs.
- Confirm the race, filing jurisdiction, and office powers.
- Review the applicable campaign committee records, donors, PACs, vendors, reports, and compliance history.
- Check whether any bitcoin contribution is properly valued and disclosed, while keeping fundraising separate from policy proof.
- Read the candidate’s applicable personal financial disclosures for relevant assets, income, and transactions.
- Compare each promise with bills, votes, sponsorships, committee work, and amendments.
- Record the candidate’s explanation for changes or apparent conflicts.
- Assign one evidence status to each issue and list unresolved questions.
- Vote with the documented record, not with an assumption that a slogan, donation, or missing statement answers every crypto question.
