Before buying, ask the seller for a clear photo of the actual drive’s label and a live device-information readout from that same unit showing its complete model string and firmware revision. Match both against the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model, including every suffix. A listing headline or a Windows Device Manager entry alone does not verify the installed firmware.
What to ask the seller for
- A photo of the drive’s own label. Ask for a recent, readable image showing the full model name and part number. For an external drive, the label should be on the drive, not just its retail box. If the product is an enclosure containing an internal mechanism, ask for a device-information screenshot that identifies the optical mechanism.
- A live model-and-firmware readout. Request a screenshot or short video made from the same drive, with its complete model string and firmware revision visible. If the seller has more than one optical drive connected, ask them to show which device is selected.
- A disclosure about the unit’s history. Ask whether it is original, OEM or rebadged, refurbished, or firmware-modified. Do not infer any of these details from a similar model name.
Treat the label and live readout as evidence about the particular unit being sold, not just the product family in the listing.
How to check the Blu-ray drive model and firmware
- Copy the complete model string. Keep all suffixes and OEM designations. Similar-looking models may have separate firmware support, as Pioneer’s firmware page illustrates by listing variants individually.
- Find the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model. Check that the device category, model designation, firmware download, and any update notes correspond to the unit the seller identified. ASUS also maintains an Optical Disk Drive Firmware support page; the existence of a vendor support page does not by itself establish how to read firmware from a device.
- Compare the revision, not just the model. Match the seller’s reported firmware revision to the information for that exact model on the manufacturer page. Firmware listings can change, so note the page and the date you checked it.
- Do not substitute a near-match. If you cannot find the exact seller model on the manufacturer’s site, contact the manufacturer or treat firmware support as unresolved. Do not use an updater for a similar model.
What Device Manager can—and cannot—tell you
In Windows, Device Manager can help establish whether the system detects an optical drive. Microsoft’s support guidance addresses the DVD/CD-ROM drives category and recognition problems, including a drive that does not appear in File Explorer or shows an error. That is not a universal method for reading the drive’s firmware revision. Use a device-information readout that identifies the optical drive if you need to confirm firmware.
Why the exact model and firmware matter
Manufacturer update pages can distinguish models that look like members of the same family and can attach different downloads or warnings to particular revisions. For example, Pioneer’s page lists BDR-XS07UHD separately from BDR-XS07TUHD. It gives BDR-XS07UHD firmware 1.04, updated November 21, 2024, and states: “Once updated to version 1.04, this drive will not revert to older firmware versions.” That warning is specific to the named model and version; it should not be generalized to other drives.

The same page lists BDR-XD07UHD / BDR-XD07TUHD firmware 1.06, updated November 21, 2024, and BDR-213ULBK / BDR-213EBK / BDR-213CBK firmware 1.05, updated September 20, 2023. These are examples of model-specific entries, not recommendations to update a drive. Check the current page for the exact model before relying on any firmware claim.
Check the delivered drive before relying on the listing
- Photograph the drive’s label before installing it and compare the full model and part number with the listing and seller’s photo.
- Connect the drive and capture a fresh model-and-firmware readout. Compare it with the pre-sale evidence.
- If using Windows, check Device Manager to see whether the optical drive is detected; do not treat detection as proof of firmware revision.
- Recheck the exact model’s official support page and record the page and date if firmware availability matters to your purchase decision.
Make sure you are checking the right kind of Blu-ray device
A computer optical drive and a standalone Blu-ray Disc player are different device classes; their menus and update procedures are not interchangeable. Sony provides instructions for checking firmware on a Blu-ray Disc player, while Panasonic tells player owners to compare the installed version with update information for the exact player model. Those examples do not establish a method for identifying firmware in a PC’s internal or USB optical drive.

Compare candidate drives before paying
If you are choosing among listings, compare these details rather than relying on a broad product-family name:
- Complete mechanism or drive model, including suffixes and OEM designations.
- Internal SATA or external USB form.
- Supported disc formats, including whether UHD Blu-ray capability is required for your use.
- Firmware revision and whether the manufacturer offers an updater for that exact model.
- Whether the unit is OEM/rebadged or modified, and whether the seller can substantiate the claim.
- Return window and the seller’s willingness to provide label and live-readout evidence.
Manufacturer support pages show why model matching matters, but they do not establish a universal compatibility matrix across all drives, software, or applications. Nor is there one confirmed manufacturer-approved utility established here that reports model and firmware for every internal drive, USB bridge, OEM rebadge, and enclosure. A product’s own documentation may describe such fields, but that alone does not make it a universal verification method.

When the seller cannot prove the claim
If the seller will not provide a readable label photo and a live model-and-firmware readout, regard the advertised identity and firmware as unverified. That does not prove the listing is inaccurate, but it leaves you without evidence that the specific unit matches the claim. Do not try to make a mismatch disappear by cross-flashing firmware: some manufacturer updates cannot be rolled back, and an updater intended for a similar model may not apply to the drive you receive.
