To verify a Bitcoin payment, obtain its transaction ID (txid), inspect the transaction returned by a reputable explorer or your own Bitcoin Core node, match the intended addresses and amount, and check whether a block contains it. A transaction shown only in a mempool has zero confirmations and is not settled. Count the containing block as confirmation one, then add one for each subsequent block. The number of confirmations you require is a risk decision: six is a common conservative threshold for high-value or fraud-sensitive payments, but it is not an absolute mathematical guarantee.

This guide explains exactly what to check, how to verify independently with Bitcoin Core, why transactions remain unconfirmed, and how to decide when a payment is safe to release goods, services, or funds.

What transaction verification actually proves

A Bitcoin transaction is a signed instruction that spends specific previous outputs and creates new outputs. Its transaction ID, or txid, is the identifier produced from the transaction data. Possessing a txid proves that you have a reference to a particular transaction; it does not by itself prove that the transaction was mined or that it will remain in the chain.

Verification has three separate questions:

  • Is this the transaction the payer intended? Compare the txid record with the recipient address, amount, units and fee.
  • Has the network accepted it as valid? A node may validate and relay a transaction before it is mined, placing it in that node’s mempool.
  • Has the transaction become sufficiently difficult to replace? A block inclusion gives one confirmation. Additional blocks increase the work an attacker would have to reproduce to replace that history.

A wallet’s “sent,” “received,” or “complete” label is not enough evidence for a high-stakes payment. Screenshots can be altered, and a wallet may display a locally created or broadcast transaction before any block includes it. Use the txid record returned by a node or explorer and inspect its chain position.

The confirmation states and what they mean

Status What it proves How to treat it operationally
0 confirmations
Mempool only
A node has accepted the transaction under its current validation and relay policy, but no block has included it. Do not treat the payment as settled for an irreversible delivery. A conflicting transaction may still be confirmed instead.
1 confirmation The transaction is in the current best-chain tip block. Often adequate for low-value payments when the recipient accepts short-term reorganization risk. Wait for more depth when a loss would matter.
2–5 confirmations The transaction is buried beneath additional blocks. Replacement risk is lower. Set the required depth according to value, time sensitivity and the realistic capability of an attacker.
6 or more confirmations The transaction has substantial chain depth and accumulated proof-of-work behind it. A common conservative rule for high-value or fraud-sensitive payments. It remains a policy threshold, not a universal guarantee.

Bitcoin settlement is probabilistic rather than an instant irreversible flag. The Bitcoin Core Developer Guide explains that once a transaction is included in a block, a double spend would require modifying blockchain history, which is difficult. Each later block adds more history an attacker would need to replace. “Final” should therefore mean “deep enough for this payment’s risk policy,” not “impossible to reverse under every conceivable circumstance.”

How to verify a transaction step by step

1. Get the exact txid

Copy the transaction ID from the sending or receiving wallet. A txid is normally a 64-character hexadecimal string. Copy it rather than retyping it, and check that the first and last characters were not truncated. If a service gives you only a screenshot, request the txid itself.

For a payment you are receiving, ask the sender for the txid and the network used. Bitcoin mainnet, a test network and an unrelated token can have different explorers and transaction formats. Do not assume that a transaction visible in a wallet belongs to Bitcoin mainnet without checking the wallet’s network setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Query a reputable explorer or your own node

Paste the txid into an established Bitcoin blockchain explorer, or query a Bitcoin Core node that you control. The result should identify the transaction and show its inputs, outputs, amount, fee when available, and confirmation state. Treat any single public website as one service’s view; if the payment is disputed, cross-check with another independent source or your own node.

A public explorer is convenient but receives the txid, and often the associated addresses, as part of the lookup. A self-hosted node avoids disclosing the query to an explorer operator and lets you automate checks through RPC or REST.

3. Match the recipient, amount and outputs

Find the output paying the intended recipient address and verify the exact amount in BTC and, where relevant, satoshis. A transaction can have multiple outputs, including change returned to the sender. Do not mistake a change output for the merchant’s payment, and do not add all outputs together as though they were paid to one recipient.

Check the sender’s stated amount against the output value, not merely the wallet’s fiat conversion. Confirm that the address is on the expected network and that the displayed transaction is not a similarly named or partially matching record. Review the fee when the explorer or node provides it; an unusually low fee can explain a long wait but does not make an otherwise valid transaction invalid.

4. Determine whether it is unconfirmed or confirmed

If the record says “unconfirmed,” “pending,” or “0 confirmations,” it is currently in a mempool view and has not appeared in a block. Bitcoin Core defines mempool entries as transactions a node has verified as valid but that have not yet appeared in a block. Broadcasting a transaction does not ensure that the receiver gets paid: a conflicting transaction can still win inclusion.

If the record shows a block hash, block height or a positive confirmation count, it is confirmed. The first block containing the transaction supplies confirmation one. A transaction with a confirmation count of five is in a block with four later blocks built on top of it.

5. Record the containing block and confirmation depth

For a confirmed payment, record the block hash, block height and confirmation count at the time you make the decision. The block hash identifies the specific block; the height identifies its position in the chain. Recheck the depth before releasing an irreversible good or service, because the newest block has the greatest short-term reorganization exposure.

Do not reject a confirmed transaction solely because it was not in your local mempool first. A transaction can reach a miner or another peer and be learned by your node only after the block arrives. Node software validates the block and its transactions against consensus rules even when those transactions were absent from the local mempool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Apply your acceptance policy

Use the transaction’s value, the reversibility of what you are delivering, the delay you can tolerate and the threat model you face. A coffee purchase and a large, irreversible shipment should not have the same confirmation rule. Document the rule in advance so staff do not improvise under pressure.

Checking independently with Bitcoin Core

Bitcoin Core provides a graphical interface and command-line/API methods for viewing transactions, tracking payments, creating transactions and receiving block or transaction notifications. Running your own node gives you an independent validation source, but it requires the blockchain data, disk space, network connectivity and operational maintenance of a full node.

Check a transaction belonging to your Core wallet

If the transaction is associated with a wallet loaded in Bitcoin Core, use the gettransaction RPC:

bitcoin-cli gettransaction "TXID"

Replace TXID with the actual identifier. The response can include the txid, amount, fee when available, confirmations, block hash, block height, block index, block time and a trusted field for a zero-confirmation wallet transaction. A zero confirmation count means the wallet knows about the transaction but no block has included it; it is not a final settlement signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a machine-readable call, request JSON from the RPC interface and have your application require the fields it needs before marking an invoice paid. Do not treat a missing field as confirmation: unconfirmed transactions normally have no containing block hash or height.

Inspect an arbitrary transaction with the raw-transaction RPC

For a transaction that is not in one of your wallets, Bitcoin Core can decode it with:

bitcoin-cli getrawtransaction "TXID" true

Looking up an arbitrary confirmed transaction generally requires the node to be built with transaction indexing enabled. Start Bitcoin Core with txindex=1 in its configuration, allow the index to complete, and then retry the query. A transaction in the local mempool can normally be inspected without a full historical transaction index. Follow your installed Bitcoin Core version’s command help for exact options and authentication settings.

Use the REST interface

Bitcoin Core’s REST interface exposes transaction and related block or mempool endpoints. A transaction lookup uses the /tx/<TX-HASH> route (with the response format required by your deployment). Confirmed transaction lookups may require txindex=1; by default, the transaction endpoint searches the mempool. Protect the REST service with appropriate network restrictions and credentials rather than exposing an RPC-capable node directly to the public internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the local mempool explicitly

To inspect a transaction that your node currently has in its mempool, use:

bitcoin-cli getmempoolentry "TXID"

A successful response means that this node has the transaction in its local unconfirmed set. An error can mean that the transaction is confirmed, has been evicted, never reached this node, or was rejected. It does not prove that the transaction does not exist elsewhere on the network.

Automate confirmation monitoring

For recurring invoices, poll the transaction and its block metadata or subscribe to Bitcoin Core notifications. Your application should store the txid, expected output address, expected amount, first-seen time, block hash and the confirmation threshold. On every check, compare the observed output with the invoice rather than trusting a wallet status string.

When a block is reorganized, the transaction’s confirmation count and containing block can change. A robust payment system should pause final fulfillment if a previously seen block disappears, then resume only after the transaction is confirmed in the replacement best chain at the required depth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a Bitcoin transaction is still unconfirmed

Fee and congestion

Miners choose transactions according to fee economics and package policy, while nodes apply relay and mempool limits. During busy periods, a transaction with a lower fee rate can remain in the mempool for a long time even though it is valid. Waiting is often the correct response; do not assume that repeated broadcasts create extra confirmations.

The transaction was not received by your node

Mempools are local. Different nodes have different peers, propagation paths, policy settings and timing, so their unconfirmed sets are not identical. Your explorer or node may show nothing while another node has the transaction, or it may show a transaction that a different service has not yet learned.

A replacement or conflicting transaction exists

Some transactions signal that they can be replaced under Bitcoin’s fee-bumping rules. A sender may issue a replacement with a higher fee, or two transactions may attempt to spend the same inputs. Only one conflicting spend can ultimately be confirmed in the same chain history. Until a block includes the payment and you have accepted the resulting depth, do not deliver something that cannot be recovered.

The transaction was evicted or rejected

A node can remove an unconfirmed transaction because of memory pressure, expiry policy, fee requirements or a replacement. A wallet may still display the transaction even after your node has dropped it. Ask the sender to inspect the txid and, if necessary, rebroadcast or create a correctly fee-bumped replacement according to the wallet’s capabilities. Never ask the sender to create a second payment without first checking whether the original could still confirm, because that can create an unintended duplicate payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transaction is confirmed elsewhere but absent from your mempool

Block propagation does not require every node to have held every transaction in its mempool. If the block containing the transaction is valid and part of your node’s best chain, the transaction is confirmed even if your local mempool never contained it.

How many confirmations are enough?

There is no universal confirmation number that makes every payment risk-free. Choose a depth by considering the amount at stake, how quickly the recipient must act, whether the goods or service can be recovered, the likelihood of fraud and the capabilities of a potential attacker.

Payment situation Possible policy Reasoning
Small, reversible purchase 0–1 confirmation only if the business explicitly accepts the risk The loss is limited or the item can be withheld until a block appears.
Ordinary retail or service payment 1–3 confirmations, depending on value and fraud exposure One confirmation establishes current inclusion; extra depth reduces short-term reorganization risk.
Large or difficult-to-recover delivery Several confirmations chosen in a written risk policy The cost of a mistaken release justifies waiting for more chain depth.
High-value or fraud-sensitive settlement Six confirmations is a common conservative rule cited by Bitcoin Core documentation Six blocks provide substantial additional proof-of-work, but remain a policy threshold rather than an absolute guarantee.

Confirmation time is not fixed. Blocks are found probabilistically, so “six confirmations” means six blocks, not a guaranteed number of minutes. A busy mempool can delay the first block, and a short-lived reorganization can temporarily alter the depth of a recent transaction.

What a mempool transaction does—and does not—tell you

A mempool entry is useful evidence that at least one node has validated the transaction under its current rules and accepted it for relay. It is not a global ledger and not a promise that a miner will include the transaction. Nodes can disagree about which unconfirmed transactions they know, and a node’s policy acceptance is separate from consensus-confirmed history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, a merchant can use zero-confirmation acceptance only with explicit controls: limit the amount, detect conflicting spends, delay irreversible fulfillment, and define what happens if the transaction never confirms. A screenshot of a mempool entry is weaker still because it does not establish that the displayed transaction is the one paying your address or that it remains present on the network.

Explorer lookup versus your own node

Factor Public explorer Your Bitcoin Core node
Independence Relies on one service’s infrastructure, policies and view. Validates blocks and transactions according to your node’s consensus rules.
Data scope Usually provides a convenient indexed view of the public chain and that service’s mempool. Provides your local mempool and full-chain data available to the node; peers may still differ on unconfirmed transactions.
Privacy The operator can see the txid and may associate related addresses or queries. Queries stay with infrastructure you control, subject to your node’s own logs and network exposure.
Automation Manual pages or an external API, subject to its terms and availability. RPC, REST and notification mechanisms support automated invoice and confirmation workflows.
Finality policy You must apply your own confirmation threshold after reading the service’s data. You still must apply your own threshold; a node does not turn probabilistic settlement into absolute finality.

For an occasional low-value check, a reputable explorer is usually the fastest option. For privacy-sensitive payments, repeated invoice processing, or independent auditing, a self-hosted node is better suited. Many organizations use both: an explorer for a quick second opinion and their node as the system of record.

Common verification mistakes

  • Confusing a txid with confirmation. A valid-looking identifier can refer to an unconfirmed transaction or to no transaction your chosen service has learned.
  • Checking the wrong address. Compare the exact output address and amount; do not rely on a shortened display or a contact name.
  • Counting the sender’s broadcast as payment. Broadcasting only places a transaction into propagation; it does not guarantee inclusion.
  • Assuming one explorer is the entire network. Explorer mempools are service-specific, and indexing delays can occur.
  • Ignoring block replacement risk. Treat the newest block cautiously and recheck depth before an irreversible action.
  • Using a wallet’s fiat amount as proof. Exchange rates fluctuate; verify the on-chain BTC or satoshi output.
  • Rebroadcasting blindly. A second transaction can conflict with the first or pay twice. Inspect the original txid and wallet state first.
  • Exposing node interfaces. RPC and REST endpoints should be restricted and authenticated; they are not casual public web services.

A practical decision procedure for recipients

  1. Write down the invoice’s expected Bitcoin address, amount, network and required confirmation depth.
  2. Obtain the txid directly from the payer or payment system.
  3. Query the txid in your chosen explorer or Bitcoin Core node.
  4. Match the exact output address and amount, accounting for other outputs and change.
  5. If there is no block hash or the count is zero, mark the payment as pending rather than paid.
  6. If confirmed, record the block hash and height, then wait until the policy’s confirmation count is reached.
  7. Refresh the record immediately before releasing an irreversible good, and stop if the transaction moves to a different chain position or loses confirmation.
  8. Retain the txid, observed block data and decision time for reconciliation and customer support.

When a transaction appears to disappear

An unconfirmed transaction can vanish from one mempool without being invalidated everywhere. It may have been evicted, replaced, dropped after a policy timeout, or simply never reached that node. Query more than one independent view and ask the sender’s wallet whether it still considers the transaction pending, conflicted or replaced.

If a confirmed transaction disappears from the best-chain view, treat that as a reorganization event. Verify the new best chain, look for the transaction in the replacement branch, and restart your confirmation count from the transaction’s current containing block. Do not rely on an old screenshot or a previously recorded count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Verification means more than finding a txid: match the transaction’s outputs, establish whether a block includes it, record its block and count subsequent blocks. Zero confirmations is a broadcast and validation signal, not settlement. One confirmation is current-chain inclusion; additional confirmations reduce replacement risk. Use a threshold proportionate to the payment, with six confirmations as a commonly cited conservative rule for high-value or fraud-sensitive transactions, and make the final decision from current chain data rather than a wallet label or screenshot.
