Ventilate when current local air-quality information shows outdoor air has improved—not simply because smoke is no longer visible. Open windows or your HVAC system’s fresh-air intake, and run kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans. If air quality worsens again, close openings and reduce outdoor-air intake. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not specify a universal number of minutes or hours to leave windows open.
Check outdoor air before opening windows
Smoke can vary from one location to another and change over time. Check current information from your state, local, or Tribal air-quality agency, or use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, before bringing outdoor air into your home. EPA recommends checking local air-quality information because visible smoke alone does not establish whether the air at your home is clean.
An indoor air sensor can provide localized readings, but it measures air; it does not clean it. Use official outdoor-air information to decide whether to ventilate.
Air out the home when conditions improve
When outdoor air quality improves, open windows or the HVAC system’s fresh-air intake to exchange indoor air. EPA also recommends running kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans during this period. Its guidance describes ventilation as an opportunity to air out the home, even temporarily; it does not give a fixed schedule or a guaranteed duration.

How much outdoor air enters depends on the home and its ventilation setup. Smoke can enter through windows and doors, kitchen or bathroom fans, HVAC fresh-air intakes, and small openings or cracks. Pay attention to how outdoor conditions are changing rather than relying on a single ventilation setting.
Change the settings if smoke returns
If local air quality worsens, close windows and doors and reduce outdoor-air intake. For an HVAC system with a fresh-air control, EPA advises closing the outdoor-air damper or setting the intake to recirculate during smoky conditions.

EPA Indoor AirPlus guidance says occupants may temporarily turn off mechanical ventilation during extreme wildfire events to reduce smoke entry, then resume normal ventilation after the event to dilute indoor contaminants. That is context for homes with whole-building mechanical ventilation—not a reason to leave every ventilation system off once outdoor air has improved.
Use filtration alongside ventilation
Ventilation and filtration address different needs: ventilation exchanges indoor air when outdoor conditions allow; filtration helps reduce particles in the air that is already indoors. EPA describes portable air cleaners and DIY air cleaners as room-level options, while a central HVAC system can filter air throughout a home.

- Central HVAC filter: EPA gives MERV 13 as an example, or recommends using the highest-rated filter the system can accommodate. Check the system’s compatibility limits; MERV 13 is not appropriate for every HVAC system.
EPA reports that during wildfire smoke events, with doors and windows closed and portable air cleaners not in use, indoor PM2.5 levels are generally around 55% to 60% of outdoor levels; estimates vary substantially among homes, from 30% to 100%. These figures are context from prior studies cited by EPA, not a prediction for a particular home or a measure of the result of post-event ventilation.
EPA also describes a study in which a DIY air cleaner reduced PM2.5 by about 56% after 90 minutes in a larger room and about 99% within 60 minutes in a smaller room. Those study outcomes are not guarantees for a different room or setup.

Handle ash separately from ventilation
Opening windows does not remove ash or residue that has settled indoors or outdoors. EPA advises people doing ash cleanup to wear gloves and an N95 respirator. Children, older adults, and people with heart or lung disease should not take part in cleanup.
EPA identifies children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with heart or lung disease as groups at greater risk from wildfire smoke exposure. If someone in your household is in one of these groups, be especially attentive to current local air-quality information and avoid exposing them to smoke during ventilation or cleanup.

A practical decision sequence
- Check current outdoor air: Consult your state, local, or Tribal air-quality agency, or the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.
- If air quality has improved: Open windows or the HVAC fresh-air intake and run kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans to air out the home.
- If air quality worsens: Close windows and doors and close or recirculate the HVAC fresh-air intake.
- Use filtration as needed: Run a suitable room air cleaner or use the highest HVAC filter rating the system can accommodate.
- If cleanup is needed: Treat ash as a separate exposure risk; use gloves and an N95 respirator, and keep higher-risk people away from the cleanup.
