The practical way to value an ASX share is to start with the issuer’s latest annual and half-year reports, calculate a sustainable earnings-per-share (EPS) figure, divide the share price by that EPS, and then test the result against genuinely comparable companies and the wider market. P/E is a useful relative measure, not a universal “cheap” or “expensive” rule. Dividend yield, price-to-book, market capitalisation, revenue multiples, cash flow and balance-sheet risk provide essential cross-checks.
What you are actually estimating
A share valuation asks what the market price implies about the company’s future earnings, cash generation, assets and risks. The price is observable; sustainable earnings and the appropriate multiple are estimates. A ratio can therefore highlight an inconsistency—such as a low price despite strong recurring earnings—but it cannot, by itself, establish fair value.
The price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) is the central starting point for a profitable company:
P/E = current share price ÷ earnings per share (EPS)

EPS is the denominator. ASX defines it as net profit after tax divided by ordinary shares on issue. In practice, use profit attributable to ordinary shareholders and make sure the share count reflects dilution and changes during the period. A P/E of 15 means the share price is 15 times the measured annual earnings per share; it does not mean the investment will be recovered in exactly 15 years.
Because EPS can contain one-off gains, restructuring costs, discontinued operations or accounting changes, the reported ratio may not represent the company’s continuing business. The quality of the denominator matters as much as the price in the numerator.
Define the security and valuation date first
Write down exactly what you are valuing before collecting numbers. Your worksheet should contain:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- the ASX ticker and legal issuer;
- whether the instrument is an ordinary share, a CDI or another quoted security;
- the currency and the exchange-rate convention if the issuer reports in a different currency;
- the share-price timestamp and trading day; and
- whether the company is profitable on the earnings basis you intend to use.
For a foreign company represented by CHESS Depositary Interests (CDIs), verify the CDI-to-underlying-share ratio and the number of CDIs represented. ASX’s market-capitalisation methodology treats CDIs and excluded classes such as options and debt securities separately. A price copied without its security class or date can produce a materially wrong P/E or market-capitalisation figure.
Record whether your ratio is trailing or forward. A trailing P/E uses the previous 12 months of earnings; a forward P/E uses an estimate. Never place the two in the same peer table without labelling them.
Use the latest primary reports as your evidence base
Download the issuer’s latest annual report and interim (half-year) report from the issuer or ASX announcements. Read more than the headline profit. A financial report includes the statement of financial position, statement of comprehensive income, cash-flow statement, notes, directors’ report and auditor’s report. ASIC notes that listed entities lodge these reports with ASX. ASX describes the annual report as the key source for constructing fundamental-analysis ratios because it records the prior year’s activities and management’s stated plans.
Build a dated file of the documents and note whether the interim period is six months, a stub period or a restated comparative. For a trailing calculation, combine the latest half-year with the preceding full year and subtract the prior-year half-year when necessary. If the issuer has already published a newer trading update, decide whether it changes your sustainable-earnings assumption, but do not silently mix unaudited guidance with audited results.

At minimum, inspect:
- revenue, operating costs, finance costs and tax in the income statement;
- cash, borrowings, lease liabilities and net assets on the balance sheet;
- operating cash flow, capital expenditure and acquisitions in the cash-flow statement;
- segment notes, impairments, provisions, related-party transactions and discontinued operations;
- the share-capital note, including buybacks, placements, options, performance rights and convertible instruments; and
- the auditor’s opinion, emphasis-of-matter paragraphs and any going-concern disclosures.
ASIC specifies four-month and three-month financial-report lodgement windows for certain entities, subject to entity type and applicable law. Check the applicable deadline rather than assuming every listed company has the same timetable.
Build a normalised EPS denominator
Start with attributable profit and the right share count
Use net profit after tax attributable to ordinary shareholders, not a group profit figure that includes non-controlling interests. Divide by ordinary shares on issue, using the weighted-average diluted count where the report provides it and where dilution is economically probable. A simple year-end share count can overstate EPS after a mid-year placement or understate it after a buyback.
Identify items that are not representative
Read the notes and management’s reconciliation of statutory to underlying profit, but do not accept an “underlying” label without checking the adjustment. Common items requiring investigation include:
- one-off asset-sale gains or impairment reversals;
- restructuring, litigation or disaster costs;
- fair-value movements that are unlikely to recur;
- acquisition accounting, earn-outs and integration costs;
- discontinued businesses;
- changes in tax law or deferred-tax balances; and
- foreign-exchange or commodity-price effects in a cyclical business.
Do not automatically remove every large expense. Repeated “non-recurring” costs may be part of the normal economics. Keep a bridge from statutory profit to your normalised figure and state each adjustment, its tax effect and whether it changes cash.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck dilution and restatements
Review options, warrants, performance rights, convertible notes, employee share plans and contingent consideration. A profitable company can have rising EPS only because its share count has fallen, while an apparently cheap company can become less cheap after a large placement or conversion. Use restated comparative figures where the report has changed an accounting policy or corrected an error, and keep the period definitions consistent.
Test the trend
Calculate at least three years of statutory and normalised EPS where reports allow. ASX warns that EPS may include non-recurring items and recommends checking trends and earnings quality. A single unusually high year should not be capitalised as if it were sustainable. Separate growth from recovery after a depressed year, and distinguish operating improvement from a lower tax rate or a working-capital release.
Calculate trailing and forward P/E correctly
Trailing P/E
Trailing P/E uses the current price and earnings for the previous twelve months:

Trailing P/E = current share price ÷ previous-12-month EPS

The Reserve Bank of Australia defines trailing P/E this way. Use the price and EPS dates together: a price from 19 October and an EPS figure ending 30 June is acceptable as a current trailing measure, but label the fiscal year-end and the price date.
Forward P/E
Forward P/E substitutes an estimate for the next 12 months. Label the estimate’s source, date and assumptions. A forward ratio is not an observed accounting result; it is sensitive to revenue growth, margins, tax, interest rates, exchange rates and dilution. Do not compare one company’s forward P/E with another’s trailing P/E.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose an illustrative company trades at $6.00. Its latest normalised attributable profit and diluted share count produce EPS of $0.40. The trailing P/E is $6.00 ÷ $0.40 = 15.0 times. If you believe sustainable EPS is $0.50 after a temporary margin decline reverses, the same price implies 12.0 times forward earnings. Neither figure is a conclusion until the sustainability assumption and peer set are tested.
If EPS is zero or negative, P/E is not meaningful. Do not report a negative P/E as though it were a discount; switch to cash-flow, asset, revenue or scenario analysis and explain why.
Choose genuinely comparable benchmarks
ASX advises comparing a company’s P/E with other companies in the same sector and with the market as a whole. “Same sector” is only a first filter. A useful peer has similar:
- products, customers and geographic exposure;
- growth rate, recurring revenue and operating margins;
- capital intensity and return on invested capital;
- leverage, refinancing needs and credit risk;
- accounting policies and fiscal-year timing; and
- share class, liquidity and dilution characteristics.
Use a broad market index only as context. A bank, miner, software company and property trust can all appear in an index but have different earnings cycles, balance sheets and accounting. For each peer, record whether earnings are statutory or adjusted, trailing or forward, and whether the price is from the same date.

| Comparison axis | Why it changes the multiple | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Earnings basis | Trailing and forward profits can differ sharply. | Are all companies measured on the same period and definition? |
| Growth and durability | Investors may pay more for predictable, durable growth. | Is growth organic, recurring and cash-backed? |
| Margins and returns | Higher margins and returns can support a premium. | Are they stable through a cycle? |
| Leverage | Debt raises equity risk and interest sensitivity. | What happens if rates or earnings move against the company? |
| Dilution | Future shares reduce earnings per share. | Are options, rights or convertibles omitted? |
| Accounting quality | Adjustments can make reported EPS incomparable. | Which items are genuinely recurring? |
A low P/E can signal low growth expectations, cyclical peak earnings, balance-sheet risk or poor earnings quality. A high P/E can reflect expected growth or unusually strong and durable economics. There is no universal ASX P/E cutoff that works across sectors.
Cross-check P/E with other metrics
Dividend per share and dividend yield
Dividend per share (DPS) is dividends paid divided by shares on issue. Dividend yield is DPS divided by the current share price:
Dividend yield = DPS ÷ share price × 100
Yield describes past or declared distributions, not a guaranteed future return. Check whether the dividend is fully or partly franked, whether it was funded by operating cash flow, and whether payout policy is changing. A high yield can result from a falling price or an unsustainably high payout. Compare ordinary dividends with special dividends rather than annualising a one-off payment.
Price-to-book and price-to-net-tangible-assets
Price-to-book compares equity market value with accounting book equity; price-to-net-tangible-assets removes selected intangible assets. The RBA describes these as alternatives that show the premium paid over accounting asset cost. They can be informative for banks, insurers, property businesses and other asset-heavy companies, but accounting values may be stale, heavily impaired, or dominated by goodwill and other intangibles. Read valuation, impairment and fair-value notes before treating book value as liquidation value.
Market capitalisation
Market capitalisation is a size measure, not intrinsic value. ASX generally calculates it as the previous trading day’s closing price multiplied by ordinary securities on issue and updates the figure overnight. Record the date, price, ordinary-security count and any CDI ratio. Exclude options and debt securities unless your analysis explicitly calls for an enterprise-value adjustment. ASIC cautions that market capitalisation generally does not represent an appropriate fair-value estimate for the underlying business, although it can be an impairment indicator or valuation cross-check.
Revenue multiples
A price-to-revenue or market-capitalisation-to-revenue ratio can be useful when profits are temporarily depressed or negative, but only with closely comparable businesses. ASIC says the ratio is generally a cross-check and should be applied only when products, markets, cost structures and funding are similar. Revenue says nothing about margins: a high-growth, high-margin company and a low-margin distributor can have the same sales multiple but very different economics.
Cash flow and balance-sheet checks
Reconcile normalised earnings with operating cash flow. Investigate persistent gaps caused by receivables, inventory, contract assets, capitalised development or supplier-finance arrangements. Review debt maturities, interest coverage, covenant headroom, leases, working-capital requirements and maintenance capital expenditure. A P/E ratio is not a substitute for understanding whether profits can be distributed without weakening the business.

Convert a multiple into an implied value range
Once you have a sustainable EPS estimate and a defensible peer range, the arithmetic is:
Implied share value = sustainable EPS × selected P/E
Use scenarios rather than a single precise target. The following is illustrative, not a forecast for any ASX company.

| Base | $0.40 | 15× | $6.00 | Current earnings are broadly sustainable and peers remain stable. |
| Upside | $0.50 | 20× | $10.00 | Growth is durable, cash conversion is strong and dilution is limited. |
Change one assumption at a time to see what drives the result, then combine reasonable cases. ASIC says valuation methods should use reasonable, supportable assumptions and that sensitivity analysis or probability-weighted scenarios should be detailed enough for users to understand the judgements. Show the effect of lower margins, higher interest expense, slower growth, a weaker commodity price, additional shares or a lower terminal multiple where those risks matter.
ASX-specific issues that can distort a ratio
Cyclicality
Mining, energy, agriculture, construction and other cyclical businesses can report peak EPS near the top of a cycle. A low P/E then may be a warning rather than a bargain. Use mid-cycle or through-cycle earnings, document the commodity or demand assumption, and compare debt service with a downturn case.
CDIs and multiple security classes
Confirm the CDI ratio and underlying share count before calculating EPS, market capitalisation or dilution. Options, rights and debt securities are not ordinary shares merely because they appear in the same quotation display.
Placements, buybacks and corporate actions
Recalculate the weighted-average share count after placements, buybacks, schemes of arrangement, consolidations and demergers. Check whether a quoted price reflects a post-entitlement or post-consolidation basis. Historical EPS may need restatement to make the trend comparable.

When earnings are negative, P/E cannot answer the valuation question. Focus on cash runway, unit economics, gross margin, debt, dilution risk, asset backing and a clearly dated path to sustainable profitability. Revenue multiples should remain a cross-check, not a replacement for a business model and cash-flow assessment.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using a headline EPS without reading the notes. Rebuild the denominator from attributable profit and investigate one-off items.
- Calling the lowest P/E the cheapest share. Check growth, cyclicality, leverage, cash conversion and accounting quality first.
- Mixing trailing and forward ratios. Label every EPS period and estimate date in the comparison table.
- Using a distant or structurally different peer. Match products, markets, margins, capital intensity, funding and accounting.
- Ignoring dilution. Include options, rights, convertibles and performance awards when they can affect future EPS.
- Treating market capitalisation as business value. It is a price-based measure; consider debt, cash and other claims separately.
- Annualising a special dividend or an unusually strong quarter. Separate recurring distributions and normalise the earnings period.
- Ignoring cash flow because EPS looks attractive. Investigate working capital, capital expenditure, lease payments and debt maturities.
- Reporting a ratio without its date or security class. Preserve the price timestamp, ordinary-security count, currency and CDI basis.
A repeatable worksheet
- Enter ticker, issuer, security type, currency, price, price date and CDI ratio if relevant.
- Attach the latest annual and half-year reports and note the reporting periods.
- Record attributable statutory profit, diluted weighted-average shares and statutory EPS.
- List every proposed normalisation with its tax effect, cash effect and recurrence assessment.
- Calculate trailing EPS and, only if justified, a separately labelled forward EPS.
- Calculate trailing and forward P/E using the matching price date and denominator.
- Build a peer table with identical definitions and record sector, growth, margins, leverage, dilution and liquidity differences.
- Add DPS, yield, franking, price-to-book or price-to-net-tangible-assets, market capitalisation, revenue and cash-flow checks where relevant.
- Model downside, base and upside EPS and multiples; document the assumptions that move each case.
- Write a conclusion that states what the price implies, what evidence supports it and which risks could invalidate it.
This process produces an estimate, not personal financial advice. A ratio is useful only when its earnings definition, comparison set, date and limitations are visible.
