treat an AI-generated scientific result as a claim to check, not evidence that proves itself. Before relying on it, trace important statements to original sources, inspect the data and methods, and use independent tests suited to the consequences of being wrong. The more consequential the use, the more review and documentation it needs.

First define what you are validating

“AI-generated result” can mean several different things, and each calls for a different check. Separate the output into the parts that matter:

  • Factual claims or literature summaries: verify the underlying publication or dataset and whether it supports the wording.
  • Numerical results or statistical analyses: inspect the input data, assumptions, exclusions, code, and statistical procedure; then rerun or independently calculate where feasible.
  • Experimental predictions or causal interpretations: assess the study design, plausible confounders, and whether observations or independent data support the interpretation.
  • Code: review what it does, test it on known cases, and check that its outputs match the intended analysis.
  • Generated or edited images: verify what the image represents and disclose relevant edits.

Keep a record of the tool and version if known, task, date, inputs, prompt, generated output, human edits, and checks performed. The NIH Library’s GenAI Toolkit includes a documentation form for recording AI use and verification.

Trace material claims to original evidence

For every consequential statement, locate the cited paper, dataset, official record, or protocol yourself. Confirm the title, authors, publication details, and DOI or other stable identifier. Then check the actual passage, table, or result: a genuine reference may still be irrelevant, outdated, or misrepresented.

Do not rely on a reference merely because it looks plausible or appears in an AI answer. NIH and HHS warn that AI can produce nonexistent references and advise researchers to verify citations and the accuracy of AI-assisted work. Their guidance also notes that invented references or misrepresented data can raise research-integrity concerns. See NIH and HHS’s research-integrity reminders.

Review the science behind the result

Accurate prose does not establish sound science. NIH describes scientific rigor as applying the scientific method across experimental design, methodology, analysis, interpretation, and reporting. Evaluate those parts rather than treating a polished explanation as confirmation. See NIH’s guidance on rigor and transparency.

Inspect the data and methods

  • What data were used, and how were they collected, cleaned, and selected?
  • Which observations were excluded, and were those exclusions justified?
  • What assumptions, statistical procedures, and code produced the result?
  • Does the design address plausible confounders and relevant variables?
  • Can another qualified person follow the analysis from inputs to output?

In biomedical work, NIH guidance also calls for attention to relevant biological variables and authentication of key resources such as cell lines, antibodies, or specialty chemicals. Its grant guidance covers rigor in prior work, robust and unbiased design, biological variables, and resource authentication: NIH guidance on rigor and reproducibility in grant applications.

Use Checks to consider
Low stakes: private brainstorming or rough internal notes A human check for clarity, correctness, and usefulness.
Medium stakes: literature reviews, teaching material, or meeting summaries Subject-matter review where possible, cross-checks against trusted sources, and a brief record of what was reviewed.
High stakes: publications, official reports, policy or funding analysis, or clinical and sensitive uses Multiple checks, such as direct source review, expert review, testing or replication where feasible, and fuller documentation.

Discipline-specific expectations, acceptable uncertainty, clinical thresholds, and data-governance rules vary. Check the standards and review requirements that apply to the field and intended use.

No single method fits every scientific result. Repeatedly asking the same model can reveal that an answer is unstable, but it does not independently establish that the answer is true.

Make the result reproducible and report uncertainty

Keep the data, assumptions, methods, and statistical procedures visible enough for another qualified person to assess or reproduce the analysis. NIST’s information-quality guidelines connect transparency about these matters with reproducibility: “If sufficient transparency is achieved on each of these matters, then an analytic result should meet the reproducibility standard.” See NIST’s Guidelines, Information Quality Standards and Administrative Mechanism.

Disclose AI’s role and check applicable policies

Describe how AI contributed to research, analysis, or manuscript preparation, and disclose specific image editing where required. Verify all references and factual claims before including them. Check the current rules of the relevant institution, funder, journal, and venue; policies differ and may change. NIH and HHS warn that AI use can intersect with fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism when data are misrepresented, images altered without disclosure, references invented, or text copied without appropriate disclosure: NIH and HHS research-integrity reminders.
